Just finished installing the game twice (collectors edition).  Running Vista 64 bit all drivers up to date.  Quad core 3ghz, 4 gigs of ram 8800 GTX SLI and everytime I start the game right after the laucher I get the windows error "Mass Effect 2 stopped working".  Any idea?  I can run DA:O no problem Crysis no problem but can't even start this.

Please help.  I'm drooling wanting to play it.

Isn't the game, like, unreleased? One would assume you've got a pirated copy.

no. The game was shipped from EA store. It got here 12 hours early.

Now the only thing weird I notice is that when I was installing the game when it came time to ask for disc 2 it ejected my drive D.  I have 2 DVD ROM D and E.

Will try installing on my old XP partition (god it will be so out of date.)

sigh yes it's vista's fault (it isn't and people that moan and groan about vista hurt me brain) it works fine under vista and 7.

two nvidia cards..have you both patched to the most recent drivers? Is there anything in windows event viewer that points to the crash?

Driver for video and audio and vista all up to date. Did not check all other drivers. Trying under xp now(installing and d/l drivers) once I see the results (good or bad I will jump back to vista and get the event log).

I get the same thing. The game starts, the screen goes black while it changes to fullscreen(happens in windowed mode too), and then it just crashes.

WinXP 32bit SP3
Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2GB RAM
GeForce 7800GTX, Forceware 196.21

I can run Crysis, Dead Space, Quake Wars, fine... AFAIK I'm above the Mass Effect 2 system requirements?

Interesting point seeing that the Nvidia driver stated it fixed an SLI issue with Mass Effect 2.

Been a long time since I had to tinker to get a game running.  Little rusty. Image IPB

ohh..

actually make sure you install the version of PhysX that comes on the dvd.

I had an issue with PhysX too but it wasn't causing that sort of crash. It could be the latest forceware drivers are packaged with a different version then the game expects.

try the PhysX thing...

go to the dvd rom..right click..hit explore.

Its under Redistributables.

Double click on PhysX SystemSoftware.

It will prompt you to uninstall. Do it.

Go back in and run it again to install.

Also try the other distributables that are in there.

Error in vista (from event log):
Faulting application MassEffect2.exe, version 1.0.1593.2, time stamp 0x4b2845cd, faulting module MassEffect2.exe, version 1.0.1593.2, time stamp 0x4b2845cd, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00494505, process id 0xb48, application start time 0x01ca9e3c9d95a1ab.

hmmm..  Checked the folder and its only 9.65 gigs under vista but almost 12 gigs in XP.  I have not ran it in XP yet (need a boat load of updates).  Wonder if that is the cause.  Will try one more reinstall.

Installing the copy of the Visual C++ 2005 redistributable included on the DVD doesn't help either. (Wasn't sure what version I had; I've got VC++2005 Express(And VC++2008 Express) installed themselves anyhow...)

Still doesn't work for me. Although I did find a bunch of updates on Windows Update that the auto-updater didn't notice somehow. Installed all those and rebooted a few times 'til it had nothing new on it, and still no luck. Just crash as soon as the game starts. Going to try another reinstall.

Magically works now. Pretty ****ing stupid that the game ignores any system updates you do until after you reinstall it...
