I also have a strange relationship with Sera, I love mages, I love the Dalish, but we have the same sense of humor so it all works out.
I think this game matches the Mass Effect Trilogy and I love that universe with the passion of a Star Wars nerd.

Blackwall told me he hated me in our very first conversation, I did not get his personal quest
What the hell did you say to him? XD. He seems like one of the most reasonable characters in the game.
I personally like this approval system because it is not tied to a (visible) number. I do hope that there exists some/more disapproval based cut-scenes. Not sure if the way they talk to my inquisitor changes as approval level goes above a certain point or drops below a certain point, hope there is such a mechanism though.
In a way, I enjoy being kept in the dark
Sometimes the approval and disapproval message spam so quickly that I dont even bother to read.
After playing the game for close to 80 hours, I have no problem pleasing them but I just dont feel like going out of my way to please them
Shouldnt they be more concern about pleasing their Lord Inquisitor?
I think it's pretty lame that I got locked out of Sera's romance quest 60 hours in because her approval dipped too low (although that last conversation made me not want to romance her anyway). That's what I get for not just telling companions what they want to hear, I guess. Is that really how BW wants players to interact with their characters?

I actually like it... well, kind of. I just hate this whole "tell them what they want to hear" thing. It makes the protagonist looks weak and without ideals. If I go 100% pro mage, it's only natural Vivienne and Cassandra will hate me forever. Some time we just got to make an stand, even if we lose friendships or even people for it.
I miss the friendship/rivalry system from Dragon Age 2. I don't really want the option to change the companions I disagree with, (you couldn't really stop Anders from... doing Anders) I just don't like how "I hate you. Now, I'm leaving." is where disagreement leads to. It's not interesting. I'm not moved by arguments about the realism in approval working this way because this system is pretty contrived and unrealistic already. (some companions are clearly more important and plot-relevant than others, but all have comparable amounts of content and sidequests to work through)
Ultimately, this hasn't been a big deal for me, though. I got everyone's approval up enough at some point. I am never playing a Persona game again; I'm done picking answers just to maximize approval immediately. But I've done okay this game without distorting my Inquisitor's personality too much. I must admit that I like the dynamic of becoming fast friends with someone, finishing their sidequest and getting the friend talk, then falling out with them as they cool on you later. This happened to me with Solas, which I think is especially interesting because
Solas has a personal quest?
Spoiler
Solas is a little bit weird about giving his out in my experience so it's possible they never even saw that quest.
I didn't really notice it, I treat Vivienne really poorly and she still asked for the Wyvern heart.
I thought it wasn't going to get Iron Bulls quest as I had done everyones apart from him but turns out I just had to cycle through all his conversational options in skyhold before he would give me the quest. Was the same with Solas, didn't get his personal quest until I had gone through all the optional conversation with him in skyhold.
It's a good thing but it's goddamn aggrevating that we can't see the numbers anymore. Dumb as f*ck. Whoever came up ith that idea was such a *genius*, I can't even...

Only some companion quests are approval gated, it seems. I've heard about Inquisitors who Vivienne hated getting that quest. You won't get their quests if Bull or Blackwall hates you, as far as I know.
But you don't have approval ratings or numerical figures in real life. Why do you need them in game. In real life, you make choices that not everyone will agree with. The same thing has been implemented within these games. Characters will have their own feelings towards you, and it's your job to pick up on them, not be given them, otherwise it would detract from character development.
.... but you do? What would you consider your relationship with your mom? 1 out of 10 or 10 out of 10 or somewhere inbetweeen? What about your dad? Everything can be put into numbers. Its just that most people don't do it. Or only do it if asked on a survey.

I think the current approval system is really lacking:
I personally
- need a meter to know when the approval hits max(so I don't feel obliged to take Blackwall with me to fight darkspawn and can finally take Cassandra instead).
- need to be shown those "Solas approves" messages even when the approval is at max. We have very, very few interjections and voiced lines here, so at least let us have this.
- need more spread-out content. When I took Dorian to the party, I immediately got his family quest at Skyhold, solved it, then had another conversation, and we didn't talk until the end of the game, though his approval was maxed. Same goes for the other companions - Varric in particular was silent, much like in Origins. I think for a long, long game like that, more content is needed. Or fewer companions.
a lot of quests are story gated... blackwall's personal quest wont pop till after halamshiral and here lies the abyss are done, then he asks you for some company in the tavern, then you go back to the stable and find out hes gone. The quest for solas popped after here lies the abyss and i had very high approval rating before hand, same with cassandra and varric. Plus viviene's just popped after halamshiral and here lies the abyss and im neutral with her... So unless blackwall just upright despises you, i dont think you should have trouble triggering it... if you need more approval, go hunt darkspawn, after every battle he gains approval.

Well in real life I'm not putting Dragons on the Endangered Species List either.
I hate the approval system in role-playing games, period. Mass Effect did it right where your character could have their convictions for or against your companions' and still pursue all the content. I didn't have to suck-up to my party members in order to play through content and get the entire Mass Effect experience. This is something I wish Dragon Age would catch on and just remove entirely from their game. It weakens my ability to play the character I want to be when I risk losing a party member or quests (exp, influence, power) because I didn't pander to them enough. Saving the world isn't enough for you? Then why are you even in the Inquisition...
I wonder if approval numbers are constant, i.e "slightly approves" is always equal to, let's say, 1, or it can be, for example, 1-3 depending on the situation.
The thing that bothers me is that the developers said that I wouldn't have to pander to each companion to get good approval from them, but I find I still need to tell them what they want to hear just to unlock their personal quests.
I hate it, especially in regards to romance. The romances are already heavily gated; my inquisitor has two options, and I only like one of them. And then I had to do a 50 hour song and dance routine trying to please him just to get his personal quest and initiate the romance.
I prefer Mass Effect's lack of approval system far better. At no point did I ever feel like I it didn't make sense for the followers to still be supporting Shepard. I think that was just great writing. The DAI characters should have strong reasons for wanting to be a part of the inquisition, even if they don't agree with some of the inquisitor's decisions, so this "approval system" is at best pointless and at worst headache inducing.
The first thing I did when I learned how to mod my xbox saves was give everyone full approval on DA2. I really enjoyed the game even more than before after that
I didn't stress about pleasing one character over another and losing him/her in the final battle.
