Nearing the end of the game and I'm fine with approval gating as a concept, but I am getting annoyed with not being able to see approval. For example, I have yet to get any kind of capstone friendship scene from Black wall, and I have no idea whether it just has has a late trigger or if his affection is just lower than I thought it was, but he should have high affection since I always hunt darkspawn with him.

Spoiler

Side with Varric regarding Cole. He has major objections about this.

How do you not have near max affection with Sola's at that point? Heck I think I disapproval from him for every major plot except the Winter Palace and he still considers me his friend.

Nope, I ain't about this life. Did not like it in the first game, do not like it now (though it's not as bad as the first, but still not "good" IMO).

It is a very gimmicky system. Getting approval via fetch-quests is no better than doing so via gift spam, and you cannot really argue "well then don't do it" because players typically do not want to leave quests unfinished and/or miss out on valuable XP. Also, I feel like it is far more interesting to have some disagreement with characters and try to work out your differences than getting along easily and having no problems. So I still prefer the DA2 system, myself.

Then say no when they offer it? I think being compelled to do something just because it's in the journal is very gimmicky and gamey.

Really, I find it reasonably easy to get along with everyone without breaking character. The key to success with your Inner Circle is to not be a dick to them even if you disagree.

See that requires being polite to people who think differently than you. We can't have that.

I don't know why, but the Herald of Andraste is the only protagonist that I've felt compelled to play as a classic mild mannered hero. I can't do the antihero thing that I always do. At least it's been a different experience. Might have to work on my Dwarf or roll a Qunari to change that.

I sincerely hope approval stays the way that it is; it is good having to read characters to see if they have a problem with me or not.

Perhaps a mod or a feature can be added that gives some of you the bars that you seek.

I did not have any problem, myself, with approval. All companions but one (Solas, who was fairly mum since Skyhold) saw their Tarrot card change for me. Just wanted more of an option to challenge their beliefs a bit without approval loss.

Is there a thread for all possible companion cards? And maybe how they're triggered and what they mean... Cassandra's card only changes when the Inquisitor reads her poems and what follows.

I felt the same.

Which completly ruined my Archer-Inquisitor.

I did all of Cassandra's personal quests and tried to be nice to her but she would never tell my Lavellan about her brother through the whole game. Whereas with my Maker-loving Trevelyan she told me everything in our second conversation. My Lavellan even got Sera to cry over her at the end and I didn't even try to see things her way most of the time. Dorian loved her, Vivienne loved her, Cole loved her, I just could not get Cassandra to crack for anything.

Much preferred the friendship/rivalry system from DA2.

I'm not a fan of the fact that I can ****** off every companion but they'll approve of me collecting them a trinket or two, leaving me in this weird middle ground of approval where I'm unable to interact with them because all my actions upset them but the approval I got from their fetch quest means they won't give me angry rants.

Was coming in here to say this.

I want to play as, for example, a hardline anti-chantry mage, but I don't want Cassandra or Vivienne leaving my party, which I assume is possible.  So I end up with bleh approval on most characters except the one I romanced because of random things like breaking red lyrium or killing dragons.

Well, getting mixed approval/rivalry could be an issue in DA2 as well. (particularly with Isabela, IIRC) I still prefer that system, though.

It wasn't flawless but it tended to give you approval based off which side you were "leaning" on, which helped push you to a side and try to keep you there.

At the very least they got rid of the gift system where spamming them is no longer an option. I liked the approach Inquisition took to gather special items for specific characters. Cassandra is a good example.

Well i like this system, i have zero problems getting approval with my companions. Just take them on quest they like, kill things with them and be nice and understanding, and they are your slaves forever.

Everyone loves my Inquisitor.
I wanted to play an ass but Bioware makes it very hard to do. Instead my Inquisitor turned into an epitome of Mary Sueness. Even i get annoyed how perfect she seems, its strange she doesnt glow :P
My companions seem like they are swooning over her filling Skyhold air with fuzziness, i can feel it through my monitor. :D
