Oh, gosh! I thought I was the only one. Glad to have company. The game is so awesome, but this crippled tactics is so upsetting! I don't really like strategic fight, I like action, but I also dislike dumb companions. I LOVED the tactics setup in both previous games, it rocked. I filled in all the slots available, and then some with a little modding help. And my team rocked. Now I get whooped a lot.  <_< Give it back! GIVE, GIVE, GIVE!!!

I must admit though, I did laugh when fighting a giant. Every attack it makes is an AoE knockdown. So what does Varric decide to do? He runs up from range, stands between its legs(!) and fires Long Shot(!) at it. Obviously, it does no damage and reduces his stamina but best is that now he is unable to stand up - by the time he stands, it knocks him down again. Eventually, when I had stopped laughing, I had to take manual control and move him back myself. Of course, he just ran in again...

And it is not as if I could use the tac cam for that fight because it was a wooded area and when I pulled back to tac cam, I couldn't see anyone for the trees.

Really Bioware, what were you thinking?

This 100%! It really does make you wonder..

See...I'd be willing to sacrifice one or two things. I could deal with bad tac-cam if the AI was smart or if I had an Origins-style tactics menu. I could deal with a stupid AI if I had good tac-cam for micromanaging or the tactics menu. I could deal with the lack of tactics if the AI was smart or I had access to a working tac-cam.

But the AI is dumber than a bag of hammers, the tac-cam is an exercise in frustration and the tactics settings are a bad joke.

They just had to screw up all three at the same time.

Completely agree. The combat is so bad that every time I boot up the game, I get so frustrated by my inability get the characters to follow any kind of plan that I give up in disgust. The tactics system in Origins was a brilliant design, allowing you to effectively control a party of four characters in real time the way you wanted; why they ruined it in this game is a mystery to me. Perhaps they thought not many people used the tactics system (which may have been true), but for the old school RPGers who hark back to turn based games and love developing unique strategies, the tactics system was a joy, and removing it has blown a huge smoking hole in the enjoyment of the game. By all rights Inquisition should be a brilliant game, but the wonky AI, unintuitive controls, and lack of tactics bring it down to merely being a good game. If they could just fix the AI and restore the tactics system, inquisition would be just about perfect.

I was really thinking that I am alone at this. I would really love either good companion AI or proper tactical view and tactics. But these days old school is not the big companies target unfortunately:(. Game is still good as a game but as RPG It could be so much better, maybe even perfect.

Game developers seem to be placing accessibility way to high on they're priority list. So much so that they are forgetting about the true gamers. RPG's by nature are complex. RPG's test a games ability to think and react, and well..role play! That means more than just the story. @DarklyTranquil, you are absolutely right about RPGers harking back to the old school table tops, where strategy was VERY important. Hand holding in games has become to common place. RPG's should be complex and overwhelming and require hours of play to understand the combat and mechanics!

Perhaps I'm reading to much into this and the tactics system was just something Bioware had overlooked and deemed not as important! I hope that they listen and add it back in in a later patch. At least give the players the option!

They are also underestimating the intelligence of their players and oversimplifying everything as a result. Players will adapt to complex systems if the designers just explain them through well made tutorials. People struggled with the tactics system in DAO because there was sod all explanation of how tactics sequencing worked. Rather than discard a clever and deep system, they should developed a better method of explaining to players so they could use it, not just give up and get rid of it because they want to make things more accessible; people who play RPGs come in knowing that they will be more dense and complex than the average game and they will adapt if you just point them in the right direction.

Honestly, deeper AI tactics settings make the game easier, not harder. I don't think RPGs need to be complex or overwhelming, but getting my companions to do what I want when I'm not manually controlling them was not nearly this frustrating in DA:O or DA:I.

Broken AI systems that kill your characters are bad design, not difficulty. The difficulty should be in the encounter design, not in just trying to get your characters to do what you want them to.

I felt the need to login and say I agree to this. What were you thinking BioWare?!

It was 50% of the reason why I like the series and why I got DA:I. I was utterly dissapointed at the sight of the tactics screen.

I wanted to take my time setting up my tactics, then just sit back and watch my well thought out plan come to play. Sure, I can always control my characters when needed, but planning ahead is where my enjoyment is.

The game is good and all, but that tactics screen just makes me sad each time I see it. :( :( :( (really sad).

TL;DR - Give us back the tactics system from Origins please!

Players on consoles is not convenient to adjust tactics.
So on the PC the settings will not.

Are you serious? The dopey inventory system in this game is far worse than the tactics controls in Origins were.

What were they thinking ? Well, if I had to bet, my money would be on the engine. Frostbite was primarily designed as an engine intended for shooters (or you could loosely say 'action' games). It was never designed with the intention that someone would eventually want to do something that doesn't necessarily require twitch reactions or ability combos/spam. So, from that point of view, they either wanted to do better but couldn't or they could but ran into time constraints and decided to roll with what we got, watch the reactions and plan accordingly. And we all know how that turned out.

It happens. Programmers wanted the best, it turned out as always. : D

Wake me up from hibernation when they fix it

My 2 cents: I don't need to see the gigantic list of behaviors from Origins come back but there are a few behaviors that I need in order to not make me want to pull my hair out. Specifically, 'stay x range from target' and 'attack nearest'. I can't count the times I've almost rage uninstalled after the fourth, fifth, sixth time I've had to pull my mage out of melee after telling his dumb ass to hold position. And then there's that last bit: Hold position needs to mean HOLD. EFFING. POSITION!
