So I finally replaced Solas with Blackwall. I didn't want two mages, and the prospect of a second melee to help keep enemies at bay seemed great.

Unfortunately, the AI is too stupid to try and flank enemies, and just sits there taking bear claws to the face while Cassandra uses Shield Wall.

Really, really disappointing. In addition, no matter what I make Cassandra's ability usage settings, she's prone to doing nothing but Shield Wall and neglects to taunt anything.

How do people play with this AI, without manually managing every little detail right down to movement (because the AI sure as hell isn't moving intelligently; I've had Varric spamming attacks with a rock blocking every single shot)?

I really want to like this game, and every so often I start enjoying myself. And then I just have a god awful time with blunders like this. I've already gone and disabled the AI from using any damaging abilities, after constantly having them on cooldown whenever I want to do a combo. Varric will do nothing but attack, Blackwall will do nothing but attack, and Cassandra is set to do nothing but use her single and multi-target taunts and Shield Wall, but they're still screwing up horribly.

Edit: I should add, I'm finding it very frustrating to deal with my party in combat. What I'm wondering is what some people do to get around it. I don't want to switch down from Hard, I don't feel I should have to or that it's necessary. The game isn't too difficult; the AI is too unreliable.

I stopped worrying about whether my party lives or dies, turned the difficulty down to easy, quit using tactical camera, and sometimes even travel without a party at all. It feels less like Dragon Age combat BUT its more enjoyable then having my mage cast from 2 inches away from their target, cole no longer attacks from the front while taking damage, and varric doesn't shoot rocks anymore. I just kill everything by myself or ignore their health bars and forbid them to use positions. The game is fantastic aside from controls, combat, Ai, tactical camera, annoying sonar search gimmick and the jump gimmick. Lol.

You seems to be on the right path but you sound like you are doing what I do. I use both with my Mage PCut here are my settings:

I have Cass as Follow>Cass and Blackwall Follow>Cass. The goal is to have both of them attacking the same target.
Mana reserve is 0%
On both have have 2 preferred skills, War Cry and Challenge. I have disabled their offensive skills for the most part and have Shield Wall enabled. I build them to grab as many passive as possible.

Their AI can still be dumb, they persist in rushing a target and then for some odd reason will stop attacking, run a meter or 2 away and then turn around and start attacking again but overall I am not. A tactical camera user and this works overall.
