I had this same issue and I hoped it was a bug because the random drops on this were ridiculous.  I still haven't finished this quest and just left the Western Approach.  Hopefully when I came back to actually kill the dragon, I will get lucky.

Every animal you kill in my opinion should have the same animal parts and be done with it.  Needlessly making us kill 10 quillbacks for the item is ludicrous.

This happened to me once too! I stuck it out and completed the quest, but that experience prompted me to ignore the hell out of it on the next pass.

Be glad we don't have to go grind levels just to survive doing ANY quest at all. at least we have side quests to do while grinding for the next major one. I remember having to spend 2-3 days mindlessly killing things in games for ZERO reward except XP because if I didn't I would get slaughtered trying to do the next quest. Would you be happier if you had to kill say 1000 black wolves who dropped nothing just so you wouldn't get one shotted trying to enter Valamar?

I honestly did not know I had the items. I had got the tail and the quest thing updated went back and turned it in, had no clue I had the guts part finished already.

Same. Hell, I had the items before I even got the quest.

Tbh I finished that quest pretty quickly. Probably about an hour-hour and thirty minutes or so, including the dragon fight and every other stage (including the missing research items and war table missions). Maybe I just got lucky?

I think players who went rogue class had an easier time with this quest then most. Quillback packs spawn everywhere in western approach for one the specialization quests.

This would be my biggest resource complaint.  Revenant hearts are just so ridiculously rare.

Funnily no problems with revenant hearts, those drop okay. But seeing as that enemy is hard, it should drop with 100% bc that ting has a heart, right? like the quillback has a effing gut? so cut it up and get it out. Should be possible.

A thing I very much do hate is the fact, that CLOTH spawns from human enemies THAT STOP TO SPAWN IF YOU DO YOUR *****WORK RIGHT..

rgh.. so i am always scarce on cloth while leather-stuff and metal usually have their spwan point and come back-exceptions are rare animals, but well, even the snouffleur came early in the exalted plains and  in like 20 minutes I had 80 snouffleur-skins without any problems (while i am searching for intestines for a fukking hour. A HOUR.

also i am overleveled and squashing the same mobs every time gets old really quick.

shitty design for that part of the quest.., bioware. you are better than this.

do you think i had EVER as much cloth? nope. Maybe enough cloth to make a standard-fantasy armor for female characters (e.g bikini) or mabe a cloth to polish weapons, but armor? pff.

There are tons of phoenixes near that Gate, east of Griffonwing Keep. They respawn insanely quick there.

As for the Quillbacks, south of Griffonwing I usually find one or two, also near the Giant's staircase or something. They're less common than phoenixes, but still not that elusive.

I did all the dragon quests just fine, I'm not sure why you struggle with it. It isn't difficult.

Drop rates need to be fixed next patch. Leathers, quest item etc.

For me its the giant spider glands for the Dragon-slaying rune. I keep getting glands and yet it tells me I don't have them. The runes are really difficult to collect for. I don't know what to do about that particular one, and its the only one I really want. :(

Its not that its difficult its that its governed by RNG and it is possible to be on the bad end of extreme RNG results. This sort of thing is why I hate RNG in games without some sort of mitigating factor which Bioware have undoubtedly not included here.

i just went to the purple zone and left my console on the whole day and when i came back my party members had killed various animals that had wandered by and attacked them (some of the animals were quill backs) and after about 2 days of doing that i got the intestines. i did the same for the phoenix feather but it was much quicker.

I'm actually stuck on this quest right now. I started at 12:17am it's now 4:46 am... I'm on the verge of flipping my damn computer desk.
Seriously Bioware, what the ****?

There's two fixed spawn points for both of these creatures:

1) Three Quillbacks spawn on the little passage between where you climb up the ladder from the inside of the canyon with the little pond and the Nazaire Pass Camp (not the Artificer-quest-exclusive one, that's to the west of where I mean)

2) Plenty of Phoenix spawn near the locked gate, east of the Griffonwing Keep and north of the originally sulfur gas poisoned area

I hope this helps!

OT:

Four months later, this thread is still embarassing (directed at the OP & cult for throwing a tantrum over a "you" problem). It's also not a "broken" fetch quest if it requires a minimum of exploration and tracking; that's what quests to get certain types of items are supposed to be about in my opinion.

They're "broken" if they require no effort at all.

I have actually killed almost twenty Quillbacks. I keep getting alpha quills, leather and so on. I have no idea what's going on lol.

Edited: Finally, I found one... Victory is mine.

They respawn when you travel to the Nazaire camp, which is like 10 seconds to the south of it. I got mine by slaughtering whatever came at me before I even had the quests o0

edit: I just read on the EA Answers forums that sometimes this quest actually does not trigger properly. The user reloaded a safe before accepting it and then he got it from the first one he slew. Funny cause me and the guy both are on the Xbox One. It's not a drop rate problem (I think they're even guaranteed drops), it's a legit bug.

I ran into Hyena's during this quest than anything else in the entire zone. This was one of the most annoying ways to get a freaking dragon. I almost quit altogether but then I found the intestines I was looking for.

Speak for yourself. Western Approach and the Oasis are my favorite areas.

I hate desserts. Boring and bland. The worst part of every game. Especially any Star Wars game.

I especially hate how devs put large creatures in desserts, even though it would not only be impossible for such large creatures to survive in a dessert, but evolution would cause the animals to grow smaller over time.

I was pretty disappointed by that quest line. I ran around doing all Frederic's crap because I thought he was hiding something sinister. Bleh.

I didn't have too much of a problem finding them. I definitely skip out on the Spirit Mark skill for Dorian though, seems to cause a lot of issues with enemy loot drops.

The worst thing about this quest is that it's grunt work that the INQUISITOR should be delegating out to a team of Inquisition researchers instead of doing it him/herself

Evolution? Who needs evolution when you have The MAKER
