How involved/related are the various side quests to the main story? I'm asking about stuff like the Shards and the Astrarium puzzles. Say, I finish collecting all the shards. Is there any story advancement beyond maybe getting an item? I'm trying to figure out how much time I should spend going after these things.

 

The Shards are an example. I'm asking about all the various collection side-quests.

Astrariums, when completed, point to certain locations with loot. I usually sell them because I like crafting.

 

There is something that makes it worthy to collect shards; however, it's something that can be completely bypassed without consequence.  As an additional bonus, it's also good motivation to explore the maps.

In the Forbidden Oasis, there are a series of doors that can only be opened up by shards. Each additional door grants you a bonus to certain kinds of magic resistance: fire, cold, and spirit. All three have a separate series of doors giving you more bonuses for each door you unlock with collected shards. You will definitely need to collect from various areas.

In short: not related to the main story at all and can be skipped.

Depends on whether or not you want to get the benefits from doing them, but you won't lose anything major if not.
