Some tips for the best mage in nightmare mode?
What is the best abilities progression?

Depends on your party make up a bit. I'm doing two mages right now. Myself and Dorian. At first I went with Barrier for both of us with Dorian more in the support role with Dispel as well. Early I went Chain Lightning, Barrage and Immolate and left one ice ability to Dorian. Early on I found you're only really useful when you get the occasional combo. As soon as I could I respeced into Static Cage and Fire Mine while grabbing the ice mana generating passive. Static Cage upgraded is godly even on nightmare. I got to skyhold at level 9 then went for Rift Mage right away and respeced into almost the whole tree while still retaining Chain Lightning and Immolate. I got Walking Bomb upgraded for Dorian (plus Horror obviously) and dropped barrier for myself. Now fights generally go me shocking then weakening while Dorian Walking Bombs. When asleep follow up with Horror or any available detonator and things melt fast for the most part.

Build and experiment however you want. Especially if you're playing the game on Normal. This isn't an MMO where the "perfect" build is a must for raids/parties etc. Enjoy the ride and when you feel like trying something else just respec.

Get upgraded Static Cage and Energy Barrage as main damage dealing.

From passives, Flashpoint and Clean Burn are a must. 

 

You can get Fire Mine, it's also very good.

Apart from that, Fade Step and Barrier are also a must have.

 

The rest depends on your specialization.

If i play on normal, i would make thematic mages. MC Lightning, Dorian fire, vivienne ice, Solas spirit

For nightmare, it largely depend on what spec you're gonna take
