So, going into DA:I, one of my concerns were the specializations, since they seemed to be just recycled abilities from old common skill trees. Necromancer was my prime example, because I knew exactly what they were going to take out and put back in this tree. This rehashing of old skills as somehow "specialized" bothered the heck of me and it felt kind of lazy.

On the other hand, the combining of less useful specializations into really strong ones was great. Knight Enchanter is a mix between Spirit Healer and Arcande Warrior and its gamebreaking. Reaver is the best it has ever been now that it is a mix of Reaver and Berserker.

Overall, I really like the Warrior specializations, Reaver being my favorite and all three Mage specializations are decent, even if Rift Mage and Necromancer are underwhelming (Stone Fist, really? And why Firestorm? Why does Necromancer have Haste?).

But the Rogue specializations are all kind of bad. Maybe it is just because Dual-Wield Rogues suck, but Cole is useless and the Assassin skills are underwhelming. Artificer does not thrill me in concept or execution. I never used traps,so having an entire specialization based around it sucks for me. Tempest is really not that good at all. Ice is pointless, and the upgrade seems to imply that it should be used for tanking. Lightning really is only good for reviving fallen teammates. Fire is the best, or it would be if it actually worked correcty. I can basically use an ability twice before the game stops letting me use it for no reason. That defeats the purpose.

I hope that Bioware will rebalance some of these specializations and release new ones with an Awakening-like expansion (which I would love). I would like to see the return of Blood Mage, Duelist or Ranger and maybe introduce a magick-using Warrior. They did a good job combining all the old specializations so I am having a harder time coming up with something to add.

I think the biggest travesty is the fact that Necromancers can't summon skeletons. Why even have a Necromancer if you can't summon skeletons? What is wrong with the world today?

Your icon makes that statement even better. But yeah, the fact that Necromancers can't summon undead or demons is silly. That Mark ability sort of makes up for it though. Assuming the AI actually decides to help you and not just stand around.

On my second playthrough as a mage and I'd say all specializations take a mind to use. They're far more tactical in application. Aside from, perhaps, Knight-Enchanter, which I'd agree is OP on Normal or below. Becomes less so if you play on a harder difficulty. Rift Mage is all about teamwork and detonation combos as well as weakening your enemies. Necromancer is decent for Dorian and he alone. I miss walking bomb and the canonical four schools of magic.

As for Cole, sure, melee rogues are weak but the crafting system in Inquisition is not. Killed two dragons and voila! Cole now had two 402 damage daggers and some insanely high AC armor that looks badass. All of which I crafted. The assassin specialization is brutal, too. It's all about positioning. Still, rogues are a bit too squishy but their damage (if you place points correctly) far exceeds any other class that I've experienced. Unfamiliar with tempest and totally ignored artificer.

As for warrior specs, reaver is amazing and templar isn't so bad. The two sword-and-shield trees really provide all you need. I'd have to agree about Iron Bull and the reaver tree. Really great. Champion is decent if you are having difficulty generating enough guard, which I never did. War Cry and it's parralel ability got Blackwall full guard. Plus, with his armor he never looses health, so I ignored his spec, too.

I actually really enjoy the Assassin specialization. I'm not too fond of their focus ability - I was more expecting something like what the Tempest specialization got (I prefer using the Inquisitor's mark of the rift ability anyway) but they have some nice passives and Hidden Blades + Mark of Death are just as good as Assassinate was in DA2. I've dealt up to 15k damage when using Mark of Death, it's definitely useful in boss fights.
