I'm nearing or at least I feel that I'm nearing the end of my first play though as a sword and shield warrior.

I was thinking of playing a DW rogue on my second play through and up the difficulty to hard since I have a decent understanding of combat. Any tips to give me an edge above my enemies?

Stick and move, man, stick and move.  Rogues are squishy little guys and cannot take a hit, but you knew that already.  Stealth is good for approaches and re-positioning, Evade will get you out of some nasty spots if you're paying attention, and against non-bosses, Knockout Powder can buy you time for aggro to re-direct to a friendly warrior.   Don't spam auto-attacks.  Staying still is deadly.  Dart in, land a nice skill combo, maybe basic for 2-3 seconds, then gtfo with one of the above methods and re-engage when you're sure you're not being swarmed or engaged by a heavy.

Jesus Christ! Seems like a change of paste than dealing with a warrior. I guess my days of rushing through the front lines and mindlessly holding RT are over.

Make sure you have 1, maybe 2 tanks in your party at all times. Crafted gear is really useful, it's much stronger than most of what you'll get. Before you hit Skyhold, you can farm Tier 2 metal in the Forbidden Oasis, and once you get to Skyhold, head to the Hissing Wastes as soon as possible, where you can pick up Tier 3 Armor and Weapon schematics from the largely unguarded tombs. In terms of Tier 3 materials, you can get oodles of Snoufleur leather in the Exalted Plains, and Stormheart in the Flooded Mine in Crestwood.

And remember, you can always respec any character by buying a Tactician's Renewal amulet off of the Inquisition vendor.

This is great advice. The aforementioned areas, Forbidden Oasis, Hissing Wastes, as well as the Exalted Plains and Emerald Graves are the best places to farm DW Rogue equipment. Emerald Graves has Great Bear Hide, which is awesome in regard to Crit.

Also, when building your character, try and focus on Crit Chance as much as possible. A lot of the DW Passives contribute to this Stat. Also, the higher your Crit Chance, the more Stamina you regain through other Passives in the DW and Poison skill trees.

The pay off is worth it however, especially if you specialise as an Assassin and use 3 damage dealing abilities: Twin Fangs / Hidden Blades / Spinning Blades, your stamina comes back after a kill which is easy to make if you take that Assassin passive skill that eliminates cooldown after you kill an enemy. If you have no choice but to stay put and kill, you can also use parry to counter-attack attacks in front of you which requires more precise timing then the other skills but I actually prefer it.

You can wipe out the enemies' archers and mages in seconds, all while your warriors are still busy trying to kill just one of them lol

Enygma has the right idea.

Too many people fail with DW rogue on Hard+Nightmare because they play their rogues like a warrior and not like... well... a rogue :P

I found hook and chain really useful to quickly reach enemy mages/archers and take them down, especially if they are up on a different level. (Try it on a flying dragon for... interesting results)

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely keep this in mind.

I really like the assassin tree for DW, works great at killing things.  Personally, I think the combat is a bit too fast-paced for DoTs and traps via the sabotage tree and Artificer specialization, but that's just me; they might work better for an archer.

Flanking attack in the dual daggers tree is your go-to to get close to enemies and with its passive (skirmisher) you go into stealth after it lands.  This allows tons of combos since you also get stealth on kill and crit from stealth from the Assassin spec.

I really like throwing blades in the Sabotage tree, even though you sort of waste a few points to get it.

From Subterfuge, get stealth, it's passive, Evasion (the passive), and Easy to miss, minimum.  4 points total, but helps a ton with survivability

You can craft weapons that give guard on kill and heal on kill.  get one for one dagger and the other on the second dagger, and you are nigh invincible.

Having played DW Rogue on nightmare (not finished yet, I play multiple characters), here's my advice:

Get used to playing without evade/parry. First, you don't need it, second, learn so that you don't need it, third there are so many better skills. Here's some tips for a low level DW Rogue:

Stealth is important, even if you'll only be in it for a second.

Always flank for maximum damage output.

Easy to miss is important, since you get 100% threat reduction when flanking.

Poison is free extra damage.

Flank attack + upgrade instantly repositions you and puts you into stealth (know when it won't work).

Twin Fangs will drop a target to the ground, but only when attacking from behind.

Learn when to perform 2 steps back, like for the bear AOE (so no, no evade).

Again, only flank (so yes, parry becomes useless).

After you get your specialization, you can respec, but for a low level DW rogue, this works flawlessly.

In addition to what been said above:

Use party combos.

Knockdown powder is amazing tool, and it is very tactical tool, while Shadow Strike, Twin Fangs or Deathblow are detonators which can shatter frozen targets, or rupture stunned and paralyzed ones.the KP works best with mage who have mind blast upgraded  (Solas usually), with good positioning you can 2-3 targets with your KP cone, and puttargets into nightmare right away. Alternatively warrirs have big arsenal of detonators too for rupture.

On later stage the best mix of DW is one assasin (Cole or you) and other is tempest (You or Sera)

With tank (Cass or Blackwall)  and mage  (any) and 2 assasins party comboing is fun!.

Hard is easy difficulty,

And for early game equip bow vs terrors and if you search for Templars and fight boss in Terinfall Redoubt during boss-fight only.
