Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as if fan reaction towards Dragon Age: Inquisition has been disappointment. What are your thoughts?

i blame nostalgia for origins, people often remember how they felt while playing it years ago and feel that anything different from it is sacrilege. now im not saying origins is a bad game but stuff like the combat is very slow and equipment was very bland especially if you had dlc because they were better than anything else in the base game. i for one am very glad they are improving things instead of sticking to the old ways.

I'm more disappointed with the lackluster side quests. The were very forgettable. And there were only 4 or 5 that I do remember, and even then they felt... lackluster. And that's saying something considering the sheer amount of side quests. I can't say much about the main quest line since I haven't finished it (thanks to the voice swap bug) but I've heard that the build up was bad, the boss fight was easy and the ending was sudden. And also far too short.

Also no level scaling. It got to the point where I was level 20 and everything became so easy. Entire maps became childs play.

And apparently there are only 3 major choices to make in the game (mages/templars, who becomes emperor/ess, something about a well, correct me if I'm wrong) and all have little to no consequence, only providing the illusion of choice.

And apparently even building up your inquisition by capturing keeps, and upgrading your forces provided no benefit, unlike in Awakenings.

And there was no real reason to go explore the maps other than for the sake of exploring. You could easily complete the game without even going to all of them.

Also bad hair.

The bugs I can forgive. For a game this big, bugs are unavoidable.

Despite all these flaws though, I've really enjoyed the game so far. The world is beautiful, the characters are great, the soundtrack is amazing, the banter (when I can actually get it) is hilarious, heart breaking and sometimes even embarrassing (i'm looking at you Cole).

It's just, with Inquisition, they prioritized quantity over quality. I would have been satisfied with a world half as big, with more engaging side quests and a longer main quest line with better build up and consequences for your actions beyond companion approval. And more dialogue with your companions in skyhold.

People complained about Skyrim being buggy to the point of being broken, being dumbed down, and having a pretty bad central plot.

I thought the main story of skyrim was pretty good. The side stuff was a joke in that game. Like the Thieves Guild. Oh.. the Thieves Guild.

BioWare couldn't write that poorly if they tried.

I like DA:I a lot. It's not Origins, but it's a hell of a lot more playable and logical than DA2, that's for sure.

don't get me wrong I love bioware and dragon age and I will continue to buy their games but inquisition in my mind was easily the worst game in the series gameplay problems and bugs aside Bioware games are first and foremost about great storytelling and making hard choices lets face it we don't buy Mass effect and Dragon age because the gameplay is so spectacular but because we love the storytelling and the characters and frankly there were very few moments in Inquisition where the story was moving and there were very few hard choices and a lot of things it seemed were rushed DA2 was all about setting up a mage and Templar war but in Inquisition the conflict just goes away after one mission, it all really felt rushed and sloppy personally I could care less if the next game is free roam or not I want to see a return to good storytelling (especially in the side quest inquisition didn't have a single good one that wasn't companion related) and for god sakes bring back the tactics options from DAO and DA2

The reaction to this game is absolutely no worse than the reaction to ME 3.  And, in retrospect, most people are fine with ME 3.  And, EA is fine with ME 3.  So fine that there is going to be another game in the series.  I'm sure that there will be another DA game if they want to make it.

I know some people love the game, but the general attitude on here has been very mixed. If I'm being honest I've see a lot more who are disappointed than people who are pleased. It seems as if Bioware was aiming very high with this game, but fell completely short to a lot of you. So many people on here have been voicing their displeasure, and those who bother to give their own personal score of the game have been giving 6 and 7s. Seemingly low for a game of this budget and scale.

I posted a minor review in the Scuttlebutt (non-spoiler) forum after I completed the prolog and I expressed my pleasure in that. Aside from that brief visit I haven't been to the forums since. I'm back now because I've just finished the game. Other players might be avoiding the forums in the same way.

I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Really, the only complaint I have relates to PC issues, but that is divorced from game content in my mind. Even though I tried to do every possible thing before going on the last mission, I will still be making another character, and I'm going to try really hard to pick some other choices (not easy for me)...

I strongly recommend NOT using the forums as a bellwether for DAI success. Generally people are more likely to make complaints than offer praise. Also, I'm sure a great many people are still playing the game. My full run was about 90 hours, and I have been playing continuously since release. Many people are not able to do this, or might not want to do it.

For me the biggest disappointment was the main story, especially the villain which is boring and obvious and the ending which is rushed and completely devoided of drama and/or choices. I'm curious to see if DAI will get the same backlash ME3 got due to the famous three colors choice or if the fandom will be completely okay with the ending this time.

Aside from that, I loved most of the new companions, I loved exploring and I loved the new crafting system. I also loved Skyhold, but the drums, omg after a while I literally couldn't hear anything else. At first they are not so bad but they become very annoying very soon. Unfortunately the banter/music bug and the frequent freezes during the cutscenes and while I was using the war table kind of ruined the experience for me, at least in part.

My score for the game is positive (8/10), the flaws prevent it from being any higher, especially as the current flaws (on PC) prevent me from even enjoying the game in the first place with its horrible ported controls. Still, I didn't think that highly of the game until I pushed myself past the first stage of the storyline.

All in all I would just say the game makes a horrible first impression within the first 10 hours for many players, and many would have given up past that mark if the game doesn't grip them. The reason I'm here on this forum is because the game has failed to grip me, and I'm still waiting on a patch to actually be able to walk in this game without a controller (main immersion breaker for me since day one, as much as I plowed through this hiccup my sense of immersion is not there)

If you're on PC I would wait until the first few patches roll in, or give it a pass for now

Can't speak for everyone, but I *loved* the game.

I have some criticisms, but it's all coming from a place of having really, really enjoyed the game and wanting to see Bioware take more risks and make more, even better games.

To answer your questions: I think the game will be remembered as one of the good ones, Bioware Forum is almost always overly negative - people mostly cry wolf when they say they're 'giving up', and I think a lot of people still haven't even finished the game...it's really big. Frankly, I enjoyed it a lot and was glad to be RPGing with the colorful cast of characters the writers put in this one.

Surprised this thread is still up. I LIKE the game, but still my only criticism thread (that the war table is a very smartphone timegate like feature) was quickly deleted.

Anyway I love the game

DA:I ending is still way better than ME 3:s. That thing was (and still is) a horrid abomination, especially in its original form. Still, I can see the budget restraints hitting DA:I. Good thing is that they have a strong framework where to bolt more content, if they can actually get budget to do some good expansion stuff. BW has made some pretty good addons to their games in past.

Open zones are big and beautiful, but have only fairly small sprinklings of really good content like big puzzles or some other higher value content. Mostly it is just fetch this and that or kill a henchman that has bazillion hitpoints and says nothing. Best parts are the early - mid main missions and some of the companion stuff. I`d say it`s about 50-50 between good content and filler.

One of the best games I've ever played. Definitely the best Dragon Age game I've ever played. Some of the complaints I've seen are valid (i.e. bugs) but some are really just taking the whining too far IMO. And there are a lot of people hanging around hating on the game because they don't like the direction the series has gone in. There are people here posting hate for the game who are refusing to even play it.

By all means complain about bugs, but people should do it in a constructive way - add to ongoing bug discussion threads, or create a new one if it hasn't already been reported. The endless topics containing "FIX IT BIOWARE ITS SO BROKEN ITS COMPLETELY UNPLAYABLE" are not helpful, and they're nonsense because the game is super enjoyable.

Here are my opinions based on the complaints I've seen:

"Gameplay suxxors" : Miles better than DA:O or 2. There's actual exploration in this game.

"Story suxxors" : Subjective, but undoubtedly my favourite in the series so far.

"TOO MANY MEANINGLESS SIDE QUESTS" : Don't do them then. There are as many meaningful companion quests as there are in previous titles, only now there's a bunch of extra stuff. I actually don't know where this complaint comes from, because even the ones that seem meaningless (collect shards) unlock dungeons which have cool bonuses. Chateau D'onterre in the Emerald Graves is completely optional, that's a cool sidequest. The hissing wastes has a collection of puzzles each with its own cave that then unlocks a temple. A random note found in the Emerald Graves unlocks an elven ruin. I honestly don't know why people are complaining about the quests, they're optional, don't do them if you don't want to.

"Decisions have no impact, this game suxxors" : What is this, the BSN warcry now? There are MONUMENTAL decisions in this game which have a huge impact on the overall story. I feel the need to also mention that the difference in dialogue depending on your race and choice of class is absolutely astounding. The effort that has gone into the dialogue and writing/ voice acting is phenomenal.

Bug complaints are entirely valid and I'm not handwaving them away, I experienced my fair share of bugs after sinking 120 hours into my first playthrough which I only finished yesterday. If it weren't for the bugs I'd give this game a perfect score.

Disclaimer: I'm not one of those people who just love everything/ find reasons to love everything. I was here with everyone else when the original ME3 ending happened complaining and pointing out the inconsistencies and feeling incredibly disappointed. But this game is nowhere near as bad as some of the stuff I've seen people saying on here, and it boggles the mind.

That's the thing about a loud minority OP they scream the loudest. What you don't see are people playing the game in their living rooms or the conversations they are having with friends and fam about enjoying the game.

As per usual the detractors are the loudest voices here mainly because those that enjoy the game are playing it rather than roaming the forums looking for confirmation bias. Some folks still seem to want DAO II which is never going to happen.

For me, and I havent reached the end of the game yet even, DA:I is the best of the series to date and I'll tell you why;

Inquisitor: A good choice of interaction options, love the "sit in judgement" bits, missing the Funny/Sarcastic options that Hawke had but given the role of the Inquisitor its an understandable choice they made

Companions: Better than before generally and more diverse but sometimes a little lacking in humor.

Thedas itself: Amazing, neither DAO or DA II has anything on the expanses and the beautiful detail of the DAI world.

Story: Interesting and I'm very much interested to see what happens next.

Bugs: It has them as has every other game I've ever played, no doubt many will get fixed.

Sidequests: Most arent all that interesting but there's something for everyone, from puzzles to little stories to fetch quests, without them those big wide open worlds would be a tad boring.

Crafting: Much improved, enjoyable and useful.

Horses: Havent seen much point to them, its a nice addition but perhaps unnecessary since you do get fast travel as well.

All in all, 9/10 from me. Room for improvement, certainly, but overall a very enjoyable experience with flaws.

1. 6-12 months down the line will DA:I be viewed in a more positive or negative light? Will those who were harsh on the game gain more of an appreciation for it, or vise versa?

2. For those who don't like the game or were really disappointed, what's your attitude towards Bioware and the Dragon Age series at this point in time? Are you no longer a fan? Are you giving up on it? Do you have low expectations for it's future?

3. Are a lot of fans really disappointed with the game, or is this the voices of a few being really loud? When the dust settles, will there be a lot more positivity towards this game a few weeks from now?

  1. Still mixed imo. And probably not, unless DLC is particularly good or bad.
  2. Mixed to good opinions on the game myself: Love Dragon Age, and like Bioware, but for some reason this game feels a real mixture between 'product of love' and 'product of corporate'. It feels very much like a LOT of creative control was directed by unknowing management, but I couldn't tell you exactly why I feel this way. Things like not-Redcliffe and other sillyness among genuine nods to nostalgia like re-use of some updated DA:O models are probably the reason.
  3. The loud minority, as always; we're gamers. The only time the majority of us LOVE a game is a) pre-release of that game B) when peer pressure has determined that the title is 'a classic' and hating it would make you a pariah (eg. 'Deus Ex was actually pretty lame'). The game is, in my opinion, good, but flawed. People will always latch onto an talk about the flaws, making you think the positives just don't exist. Going off reaction, this game was fairly well recieved - it's certainly no Assassin's Creed: Unity.

I find DAI is Bioware's best game so far. It's not perfect, but then what is? 9/10 from me, because of the tactical camera and the Inquisitor's civilian outfit, assuming that they fix the major bugs in a patch. Regardless of its flaws, I'm enjoying DAI more than any other Bioware game, including their very old games with the possible exception of DAO at the time when it came out.

As for the general reaction, it appears to be well-received. On these forums, those who have a problem with the game naturally talk louder than the others - who are most likely too busy playing to post much.

Yeah, the Inquisitor's outfit is really the only baffling design decision that I find hard to come to terms with. I wish my Inquisitor and Cassandra could trade outfits. She gets some kind of casual armor thing. C'mon.

In any case, I agree that this is BioWare's best. Of the BioWare RPG's that I own (ME trilogy and DA:O and 2) this one is easily the most thoroughly satisfying to play through for me. It will actually be difficult to ever revisit the old games again, even more so now that the Keep provides a handy tool to set a new world state.

From a technical game play standpoint the game is great. That's not considering AI since I don't play on high difficulty and I don't like micro managing my characters, so I let them do what they do and I have no idea how well they do it. I have seen some people in other forums point out that the AI might be terrible, which I can imagine would become an annoyance at higher levels.

That being said, I think the story is weak and most of the characters fall short. You can call story quality 'subjective' till the cows come home, but there are standards that can be defined, and this story crawls along with a forced scope of epicness that falls short of its goal, especially at the culmination of the Inquisition, which ends with a giant flop. The most epic mission is well before the end, which makes that end feel that much more dull. Don't get me started on the enemy, who basically has no personality to speak of. Whether other people feel bored or not, that's their prerogative. I compare to how I felt at the end of ME1, ME2, or even ME3 (horrible writing, but the end segment did feel epic), and the end of Act 2 in Dragon Age 2 - my anticipation and emotional excitement was through the roof, whereas there was literally nothing at the end of Inquisition.

Act 2 in DA:2 is probably my favorite segment of any Dragon Age game. The Arishok was a much better written adversary than anything in Inquisition. The rest of DA2, maybe not so great, although I never felt as awkward or embarrassed over my Fenris romance as I did with Blackwall.  That was bad. Some scenes should never have made it off the cutting room floor.

Also, there's all the loot and crafting recipes, but ultimately not that much variety within those things. The crafting feels forced. There isn't enough there to really engage me in it. I spent 80 hours in the game before beating it, and yet I have 4 runes (and not enough materials to make more). There's too much inconsistency.

I'd be more impressed if those 80 hours I spent contained more plot related quests, making the story longer. But the story doesn't feel any longer than the previous games - there's just a lot of filler. The open maps of different locations are great and beautiful, but it still feels empty to me.

I played it, but it doesn't leave a lasting impression on me. It was decent, but not great.

You know it's not nostalgia when people are still playing the game right? I finished a run though Origins a couple of days before Inquisition was released and to be honest I think that is why I was disappointed in it.

The awful keyboard and mouse controls are a part of it, I don't mind using my controller with the game but that should be a option and not pretty much a requirement.

Also, that's Leliana? Bioware have obviously spent a lot of time and effort getting characters from Dragon Age II to look as they did in that game. Cassandra, Varric, even default male Hawke, are all instantly recognisable as them. Who is this person who claims to be Leliana though? I know its a small thing and the model work is good, it's just I don't recognise this person.

Speaking of faces, has everyone had botox? The facial animation isn't bad but there is no life in them.

To be honest Inquisition was the make or break Bioware game for me. I'm not claiming that I'm never going to buy one of their games again, that would just be silly. Rather it's that they now become a wait and see company. No pre-order. No buying at launch.

I have a number of issues with DAI, including the lack of main story content. They placed way too much emphasis on exploration in this game, and not enough on main storyline.

Combat was very hit and miss. There were some good additions, and a lot of bad changes. The lack of Glyphs and decent CC outside specializations is absurd for a game supposedly about tactics. There's also the 8 slot limit. I'll never forgive bioware for that one. Tac cam is buggy and way too pulled in. I blame the consoles for that one.

All in all, I give DAI a 5/10. I stayed for the story and was satisfied, the rest was lackluster.

To the person above me. No one ever complained about skyrim. So your wrong in that regard. that's why it was a game of the year. The definitely ran out of time though. You can feel it at the end. Their is so much stuff that was left out. You feel like its going to be in the game until the very end though. You are left wanting. still 9/10.

I never even played Skyrim, and I know this isn't true. I've seen complaints about it on just about every game forum I go to, including this one.
