I am not very good at picking out abilities for my companions and had been using Auto Level-Up for them. I am not at all sure...should I continue doing that or respec them all once I have enough coin to do so? Will Auto leveling lead to underpowered, badly optimized companions who will ruin fights for me?

I'm playing at Normal.

Nay to forced auto level up being dressed up as choice, yay to optional auto level up.

Um, okay. You didn't answer my question, though. Did you read my OP? I'm not offering or asking for a critique on Auto-leveling, but asking whether or not I should rely on it in-game.

It's fairly easy to decide this for yourself, since respec amulets are a paltry 350 gold or so, easily afforded.   I find the easiest approach is to, on a character by character basis auto level them and then decide:  if I like how their skills are set up with their default progression, I'll let it stay.  Otherwise I'll respec and set them up the way I think they SHOULD be.   Simple as that.      I never had to respec an auto-leveled Cassandra, but an auto-leveled Iron Bull needed tons of work to get properly functioning and had to be redone by me, as simple examples.   Your mileage may vary according to personal preference :)

On normal difficulty, it should be fine. Hard or Nightmare though ... you're going to want to have full control if you want to survive. :)

I've used auto-leveling until I reach level 14. When I started prepraring for dragon hunting I became more decisive.

For Tank character like Cassandra or Blackwall, Auto level up is okay because their only job is to aggro enemies.

For Archers, just make sure they fill the Archery tree first and get stealth ability from subterfuge tree

For 2H warrior, DW rogue and Mages you definitely want to assign points manually

Interesting idea.

Just tried to auto-level Blackwall at level 15. He has:

Unupgraded Shield Wall, Shield Bash and Payback Strike

War Horn and Combat Roll from Battlemaster

War Cry and Untouchable Defense from Vanguard

and from Champion all passives and Counterstrike but no Walking Fortress nor To the Death

What does it say about Bioware auto-levelers playstyle? ;)

I'd really love to see all of the auto-level specs after they get their specializations.

Dunno, what does it say?  Like the OP, I'm terrible about figuring these things out.

I would not know I play mage and Iron Bull, not confident commenting on S&B build, but its looks auto-level is viable for the purpose you stated. In such set up, from what I know from Cassandra, he would not ruin fights for you.

That's good to know, thanks.  :)

Well, I'll be paying more attention to points from now. I know I want to focus on stuff that generates Guard and help Barrier and healing at least. Other than that, I'll just be figure things out I guess. Thanks for the advice.

If you just want to finished the game in Normal, auto level up is perfectly good.

Min-maxing can really disrupt your enjoyment

For me, auto-level kept putting dagger skills on Varric who never held a dagger, 2 handed on Cassandra who has always had a shield..etc. It seems to ignore the character's equipped weapon and assigns a generic template per class. I hoped that they would have at least tweaked auto-level for certain characters, like Varric who I'm sure most people leave him with Bianca

used auto-level up on varric once, gave him some melee ability.  Never used it again.
