My guess:

They wanted to leave something to do for the modders.

The game is moddable, right?

The Frostbite engine is notoriously hard to mod, so the stories say.   EA said back in 2011 that they never planning on releasing a toolkit for the engine.  EA/DICE are the ones that built the engine, so they have the final say in that regard.

That being said, I'm sure modders will find a way in time, but I wouldn't expect mods for awhile.

I mean, of all the colors to make the casual outfit, why beige? You could have gone with so many other colors and the outfit would have looked decent, at the very least. Gold accents go with just about anything and you choose beige. Are you trying to make me barf?

Throw it in the trash and start over. I'm thinking a deep crimson, maybe black for the broodier among us, keep the gold accents, although silver would work just as well. And toss those atrocious booties off of the Skyhold ramparts.

Surely I can't be the only one who feels this way?

You certainly are not, lol! I thought exactly the same thing! What a shame I can't wear that much more presentable formal outfit I came home with

It's fine.

Anyway:

Patch 1: broken mechanics and broken quests

Patch 2: more of those and some optimisation

You're unlikely to see anything that amounts to 'fan service' until Patch 3 - so end Feb/March maybe.

How on earth did people from Bioware look at that design and think "Yeah that looks great!"

That question could be applied to a great many design decisions in Inquisition.

People just need something to complain about.

Whatever the color, you'll find someone that doesn't like it.

I actually have alot of my starter armors crafter with nugskin, and its fine. Beige pinkeh leather, cowboy hat, antivan horse, i liked the "bright cowboy style"

Also nugs are very common, why not to exploit that abundance? With all that nugskin love Quizzie pyjama does not loook so bad, its actually stylish somewhat. With shiney buttons.

Nugskin with sunstone. I used that pallete for armors quite alot.

Hold on, the penny just dropped for me. Do all races share that outfit? I thought it was the human noble outfit!

That's pretty much it. It's an outfit that cannot be changed, therefore there will be a significant chunk of people who will dislike it. There's no such thing as an outfit that everyone loves. Personally I'm fine with it, it looks pretty sweet on my inquisitor, but it's quite subjective after all.

Solution is to make it craftable and so on, and I _BET_ that was one of the features they were forced to cut, as it's too obvious.

That said, why Beige? I think a previous poster nailed it: it's neutral and works great in any lighting.

But anyway, ultimately there will always be people who dislike a particular look. Conversely, I'm sure there's a huge chunk of players who love it, but nobody's going to be making a thread about THAT... whereas people with something to complain about almost certainly will (which is why this forum overflows with negativity, when DAI is a masterpiece).

It looks like abnormally tight PJs.  I feel like that moment where Inky accepts the position then walks into the throne room all dramatically was ruined by this outfit.

Haha, I like it way better tham fem!Hawke's horrible skirt ensemble (not that male!Hawke's was much better). It doesn't irk me overmuch, but now that you mention it, the color would certainly not be my choice. My current Inq (in profile pic) would favor crimson quite well. I could see my Qunari rogue going for a darker brown, and my Qunari mage in something blue.

It would be awesome if they gave us an option to mod it in the craft armor table.

Because pretty safe choice as it's likely to work in every lighting/scene and with each skin colour you can select for your character?

As ex-Navy I can say...both of those salutes suck.

You wear pajamas studded with gems in awkward places?

I'm guessing because the game was originally human only, and the Trevelyan colors seem to be a mix of grey and gold. The others came later, so they didn't bother with Dalish/etc.. clothing.

Like I said, a guess.

Its not the color for me.  It's the fit!  Super tight everywhere except the poofy shoulders.  Looks so odd.  imho of course.

But then again, nobles in DA have been wearing hideous & strange things since origins.

My Qunari mage looks like he's running around in PJs. plus the collar clips REALLY REALLY bad into his chin/jaw. Oh it hurts my eyes. Buuut, I'm not in it much so meh. I would have loved an Emerald Green or Blue.

I can tolerate the color, but this thing is so tight it makes my female elf look like a stick figure. She looks fine in armor. Why can she not wear her usual armor in the keep?

Well, it's a good opportunity for talented people to create a mod that allows not only different colors for the Inquisitor's clothes, but also different kinds of outfit.

We could have a wardrobe in our quarters where we can choose many styles of attire, such as: military, diplomat, casual, sexy (for when you meet your LI), asf.

Here's something I do wonder and would love to see Bioware even add with enough fan request: we got this pretty robust crafting system, but how awesome would it have been to also allow some kind of color adjustment or dyes?

Being able to color coordinate my party's armor? Oh yes please >.>

Or, you know - dye my Inquisitor's Skyhold garb xD

Oh man, I hate the casual outfit on my elf.  I feel like she's walking around in pajamas; it is not a good look.  Actually, I think each race should have a unique casual outfit--at least one.  What we got looks terribly upper-class Fereldan in style, but without the bright colours.  Hence pajamas.

I was really pleased with the formal outfit, but I found it rather strange that there was nothing in it to distinguish me as Inquisitor.  (Edit)  And I would have liked an opportunity to wear a fabulous gown.
