I genuinely do think that it's about how it's phrased.  This thread immediately set the tone as a negative one.  It's complaining about the love interests and makes some sweeping generalizations and immediately paints straight guys as victims of an agenda.  The LGBT thread that you are referencing is mostly neutral in tone.  It's simply asking people to chime in on what they like and didn't like.  There have been a ton of LGBT threads that didn't start off neutrally and ended up flaming out just like threads like this one.

If I recall correctly, there is a thread on one of the subforums that is posed like that for the straight male options.  It's something like: Cassandra and Josephine.  Which do you prefer?  And, if I also recall correctly, that one didn't get nearly as heated.

I think the issue with threads like this one is that they start out accusatory and defensive all in one.  It sets a negative tone that isn't helped when people use phrases like "agenda", "propaganda", and "shoving it down our throats".  At this point, after literally about two dozen  of these threads popping up over the past two weeks, it might be too late to see another nice neutral discussion about what people like and dislike about Cass and Josephine.  Perhaps in a few weeks, once the hype dies down and a bunch of the casual board-goers and trolls retreat away, those calmer and less inflammatory discussions can happen.

Frankly, it's in between games when the most fan-based influence happens.  That's when the devs are on the boards, asking us our opinions.

So very true, they need to leave the propaganda/shoving/agenda crap out of it, get back to the nice normal discussions.

Exactly.  See the last message on page 10.  It's a perfect example of this.  Shame really.

Cassandra and Josephine are not "perfectly attractive LI's who might be a little unconventional looking", this is not a semantic game, they are ugly, well, Cassandra is plain ugly by most men standards and by videogame standards for female characters sex appeal, and Josephine between ugly and averague.

That said, the right they have to put ugly women as the only romance options for straight men (while actually putting attractive LIs for every other sexual orientation) is the same right we have to rightfully complain about it. And so far there have been tons of complaints about it, not only in this forum, but on almost every major english forum in the internet.

Seriously, I can´t think of a reason for them to do this. I can´t think of a Bioware creative meeting going like "ey guys, we have recieved praise for our straight male catered romances in our games, everyone says they love Leliana, Morrigan, Miranda, Ashley, Liara and Isabella so I have come across a revolutional idea: let´s make ugly women the only romanceable options for straight males in our next game, I´m sure everyone will love it!"

Cassandra is pretty, and Lady Josephine is Gorgeous by the standards of most men and by videogame standards.

So, firstly, have you surveyed "most men" on the subject? Or even on this site? Secondly, why does anyone think Josephine is unattractive again? I'm seriously missing this.

Quite true, I initially hated Cassandra and Josie before I played the game. Currently my male warrior is romancing Cassandra, and my female mage started out with Josie but ended up going to Cullen since I found Josie's romance arc lacking. I love their personalities and can stomach their looks, but should the opportunity to mod them arise I will do so without a second glance.

I like Cassandra's overall look, but I'd fix her jawline, and I like Josie's overall look but I'd fix her mouth. Just as with Dorian I'd remove his stache, I'd give Solas some hair and I'd make Sera not talk at all.

I would literally do all of that.

I contend that Josephine is pretty... neutered in her romance.

I haven't done it, and based on what I've heard/ seen, I would agree.

I personally think Josephine is cute but I can understand why some people might not be attracted to her. She is a noble woman. High class girl. Who enjoys the politics of the world. I think she would be more attractive if she were evil. Like in DAO you have Morrigan evil girl who can be persuaded to be good to an extent. Definitely anti-hero though I would say. Lelianna catholic school girl with a sluttly side who can sing and assassinate you. That is definitely hot. Both options very sexy. DA2. You got again one evil leaning girl Isabella. Definitely some shaddy morals with stealing and all. Very promiscuis. I can be into that. And merril good adoreable girl who is naïve at times. Once again we are given two sides of the coin. Dragon age inquisition. Good girl who wanted to kill you at first. Still she is alright. To good to ever be considered evil for that though. And Josephine who also a heart of gold. So we have the same exact option and with Josephine their is no romance scene....... That wasn't a romance scene ok.......... ugh........ Also at the end of the game how about telling me how I eventually had some kids with Casandra and that the were mages or something. I would of enjoyed that if you had just given me that I might not even care about this whole debate. It feels empty......... Casandra remade the seekers. Ok awesome what else did me and her do exactly?

I like Josephine because shes the kind of girl that can pay all the bills and support me financially while i run around and do whatever. If she was real i would be all over her.

That is all this has ever been about, taste. Sure you didn't go up in arms about Fenris or Anders, but I bet some people did. I remember what people said when Bioware revealed the new elf look. People said, "Too thin", "Too ugly", "Heads too big, while small body" etc....

While some people are using the sjw/agenda shield to describe their own displeasure with something, alot were not, they simply stated they felt a certain way about their options, and they get attacked for it.

It has everything to do with taste and preference, nothing more, nothing less.

Now you can read this subforum and you'll see an LGBT thread about the LI. They give their likes and dislikes of certain LGBT leaning romances. 3 pages, all civil and respectful.

Now on the flip-side, you have this thread. Someone states they are un-happy with the straight options. almost immediately attacked, being told they have no taste, that their own personal preference doesn't match someone elses so they are obviously wrong, and now here we are at page 10, continuing to debate on whether or not someone's own personal view has any merit or not.

I'm making fun of people who whine because they aren't respectful, civil, or simply expressing a preference, but calling female characters men and orcs, whining about EA/Bioware conspiracies, while stomping their feet and passing their opinions as fact. If that person doesn't want to be ''attacked'' maybe they need to reign in their stupid a little bit, because they're making it easy.

Yeah exactly, you cant tell me with a straight face Josephine cant pay all the bills and buy expensive stuff. Money is pretty much her specialty. An excellent and desirable trait in a SO.

Isn't that somewhat shallow, perhaps im wrong. If you see her as having wealth as the result of her being strong and independent that's different? I like being with a girl I can be broke ass poor with and still be happy with.

At least he's honest lol. Plus some women do want a boytoy (like some men want a young trophy wife/girlfriend) and will take care of them completely.

I`m finding this thread really amusing. Now Rigron, how about you post some pretty faces here so we can actually determine what your taste in women is? And preferably without makeup... You can make miracles happen with that stuff, but anyone doing more than quick flings learns their partners true face soon enough. ;)

Seriously, stop it. You have no business acting like every man agrees with you. If you don't like them, fine, I thought both Ashley and Liara didn't look good back in ME1 too. But I sure as hell didn't start stamping my foot about it like a petulant child and thinking I spoke for everybody.

Judging by the Cassandra and Josephine threads plenty of men find them attractive.

Tons of gay men fantasy about being a straight males first gay experience. Make them work hard for it. The wont care the will appreciate it. And I loved it in when I finally got to sleep with my gay roommate who came out and ask me for it after living with her for over a year. Memories :) so many good memories. Worth the wait, and all the work.

This is so ridiculously stereotypical and offensive that I think just highlighting it removes any illusion of a desire for equality from this five-hundredth thread complaining about straight male romances.

Sex is not always romance but all romance has love making.

Nope, you can be asexual without being aromatic.

Does it really matter? She works for the motherfrakkin' Inquisitor. Inky can have the debtors assassinated. On the sly, of course.

It's questionable to determine what "most" men consider attractive, sampling from groups that tend to be vitriolic, obtuse and petty about even the finest details. Videogame standards, well, the only image that comes to mind when I think of that is:

"Realism" he says with a team full of broody elves, a drunken qunari, battling dragons, marks on your hand that close rifts in the sky, lightning, fire and ice can flow from your veins with a wave of a hand, walking through a dream world full of spirits and demons, but "realism." Yes. This 'realism' thing only ever comes up from these guys when we are specifically talking about having someone who isn't them in a game.

You know what else only ever comes up when it isn't all about them "pandering" funny how it isn't pandering when a majority of our entertainment has a straight, white male lead protagonists, nope that is just expected but anyone else it is "pandering." Funny that, aye? I just honestly can't eye roll hard enough.

What percentage of dragons do you think make up the world? Gay people vs dragons, one of them is mythical, can you guess which one it is?

For some reason Bioware doesnt care about realism and will always put the same amount of lgbt characters or more in your party even though the lgbt community represents roughly 3% of the world. Having a gay party member is not  a bad thing at all but Id rather it be done how it would be in real life by having them be in the minority. If they cared about their world and lore more than pandering and trying to be the champions of social justice wed have a more realistic lgbt population in thedas. We should have had a maximum of two different lgbt characters in our party at this point.

You can't deny he makes a good point on Cullen. I didn't even realize it until now, but Cullen is so perfect it's kind of unreal. It's something you would only find in a book, movie, or video game. And that's /fine/, because it's all a work of fiction. But the fact that guys don't get that here is worthy of a few complaints. I personally have no issue with cassandra and think she's plenty attractive but I can understand other guys not feeling the same way. Those guys shouldn't be treated rudely or like trash every time they mention this just because they happened to be Heterosexual males with a complaint.

Ah well, his nose looks pretty awkward in the Fb engine :P
