How nice OP! Hope you have more fun times in Thedas. Are you more of a Mass Effect fan?

The Dragon Age series is truly amazing. I'd suggest you also play the past games, really great stories to be had and you'll probably understand a lot more of the characters and what's going on in the world.

I never played DA:2. So after I'm done with Inquisition I may just go back and play it like it's a prequel or something. Probably will play DA:O again too.

I've been reading a lot of the codex and all writings I find to get a grasp on the lore and what not.
I laughed when Varric said something like "Kirkwall isn't that bad, despite what you heard".
I heard a lot of negativity over DA2. I won't go play the previous games but they did a great job giving me insight to what happened in the first game, and the Mage/Templar conflict.
I'm still not 100% on the structure, but from what I gather, the Chantry is the main religious institution. Templars were supposed to protect the mages, and Seekers were oversaw Templars and mages.

That's basically it!

Glad you are enjoying DAI. If you want a greater understanding of the lore, I would play the previous games as some of the cameos probably will not be that significant to you not having played them. Also, for a complete understanding and if you like reading, reading The Masked Empire and Asunder will give you better understanding for some significant main quest lines, agents, companions, and even a couple of war table operations. ;p

Yes, I guess one of the functions of a templar was to protect the mages, but more than that, their job was to protect the world FROM the mages. The reasoning is that mages are vulnerable to demons of the fade, that seek to possess them, turning them into abominations. Such a possessed mage could wreak havoc on the world. In addition, magic is very powerful in itself, and even without the demons, an ambitious, sociopathic mage could do a lot of harm.
So the templars were the guards of mage circles, who would be ready to strike down any mage that became possessed, turned to bood magic, or escaped the circle, becoming an apostate.

Templars were also supposed to hunt down any apostate mages, which are mages that ran away from one of the various circles in the lands. Since in Inquisition everything has done to hell, virtually every mage is an apostate now.
I'd recommend playing Dragon Age: Origins at least. It's an amazing game with tons of content, and it usually goes on sale for as much as 90% off during Steam sales(and I would recommend getting it on PC, since the console port was not very good). It will give you a lot more background on any dialogue that mentions the 5th blight or the hero of Ferelden(who is the main character from Origins). It would be worth noting that the combat is slower and more tactical than Inquisition.

i would also def recommend DA:O. it was the first rpg i played (i used god mode throughout the game my first playthru bc i loved the player choices & story so much despite absolutely sucking at the combat). DA2 is ok, just not nearly as radical as DA:O was. for lore purposes, it does deal a great amoung w/ the templar/mage divide though.

I also think DA:I does a good job of explaining the world, to the point where you don't have to play the other two.
That said if you were going to go back and play either of the older games then DA2 should be it. A. it has a voice protag and it can be jarring for some to go from full voice to slient. B. the Mage/Templar thing really kicks off there.

It's nice to see the game functions well to be inclusive to newer players to the franchise. ![]()
I definitely recommend playing at least Origins some time, if you're ever bored and don't have any other games to busy yourself with.

Play Origins.
I'm in the same boat as the OP and after 20-25 hours into this game I decided to play Origins just yesterday. I just want to understand the lore better and the characters. Just got to the area with Allister after talking with Duncan. I'll create a thread one day about my thoughts going sort of in reverse, playing two games around the same time, and coming from MMOs. What I will say right off the bat is that my initial impression is that neither game is necessarily better than the other. They are just different utilizing the same lore. I can already see why those who prefer the play style of Origins and the way the story starts would like Origins more..and why others who feel it is way to slow and constrictive outside of the combat would prefer Inquisition. So far I'm really enjoying the story in Origins as it better introduces you to the story in a more interesting way even though I really am not a fan of tactical combat with menus with menus within menus.

My friend (he loves Mass Effect and games with choices&consequences) played DA 2 first and didn't like it. I tried to convince him to give Origins a chance but no luck. I know that he would love it. Oh well...

You are going to love origin's tacticle system as well as its combat once you entered the deep roads in search of a paragon later in the quest. Recommend you get Wynne first from the circle tower main quest as she is the healer of the team if you didn't get her yet.

I am really liking this game a lot. It's a really good rpg.
Good job, BioWare.
I have a friend who I have been trying to get into the DA games... he finally gave this one a serious go. Now he wont stop playing single player long enough for us to try multiplayer.
This game branches out to draw in some of the Bethesda-style fans, which is cool. And at the same time, it gives them Bioware characters and story.

Pff, its because of people like you that the templar/mages war exists.....
Templars are supposed to protect the mages, and only as a last resort kill them to protect the common folk.
Ye ye, I know that what you said isnt much different than what I said, but its those little nuances and emphasis on the wrong aspects that ended up bringing the war!!! Shame on you!!!
