Go into Tactical Camera, select the companion you want and double click on the ground to get them to hold position on that spot. Same method whether on PC or console.

Ah, thank you. I was just pressing "H" because that is the most logical thing to do.

No problem. You also might want to disable close-combat abilities for ranged characters in order to avoid having them wade into the thick of battle (eg., set Caltrops as disabled in the tactics menu for Varric if you have him as an archer). The game should really have explained this stuff more clearly.
