I'm new here, so I'm sorry if I am not following a particular etiquette on the Bioware forums. >.<;
I want to romance Cullen as a mage; it seems like he's grown since DA1, and it would be fun because making Fenris see the mage side of things was interesting in it of itself!
Does anyone know if they are issues I would run into following this, other than the "Don't Talk About Lyrium" warning most have posted about?
Oh! So, I guess it won't be as hard as it was to romance Fenris as a mage character. Good to know. I'm hoping there aren't any other secret "this will end the romance" items that are mage-specific. >.<
As far as the Lyrium rumor goes in reguards to Cullen's romance:
Spoiler
You can ask about lyrium. That doesn't end the romance. But at some point, Cullen tries to end his addiction to lyrium and goes through serious withdrawals. If you tell him to take the lyrium instead of encouraging him to keep away from it, that ends the romance.
There should be an option that says either you start taking lyrium again or you take those damn gloves off and take me against the wall right this instant.
That is pretty interesting. I had already had the lyrium discussion with Cullen before initiating the romance, so it wasn't an issue for me.
Spoiler
That said, regardless of romance, I will continue to tell him to remain resolute about not taking lyrium, even on my male 'Quis who has him as a friend. I can not, in good conscience, tell someone who is trying to get away from a serious addiction to go back to it. I know there are more strategy minded players who wouldn't hesitate to do this, but I just can't. =/
Actually you can tell him to take lyrium, but if you want to still be in the romance, you need to tell him that you guys will find a way for him to wean off his addiction after the Inquisition is complete. If you just tell him to take the lyrium and not encourage him to quit lyrium after the obligation is done with, he'll dump your quizzie. But I'd rather him try his best to keep his resolution, b/c of his conscience. And yes, totally romance him as FMage, as long as you're human or elf female, you're good to go. And don't worry about approval rating with your advisors.
I noticed that you don't really need to pick every single flirt option in order to romance Cullen. I only flirted with him twice after I arrived at Skyhold during my second playthrough and I can still start a romance with him. So if you want to be more immersed you can feel free to pick your prefered options during conversations. NOTE: You must romance him before going to the winter palace. That scene is one of my favorite.
I think being a mage really enriches the romance, actually. His former attitude towards mages comes up a lot, and he mentions it to the mage Inquisitor if romanced a few times. Plus she has some extra dialogue to talk about it.

That's pretty interesting. I can see why that choice would be considered, but I don't think I will have the heart to, lol.
Actually I romanced Cullen as an elf and I told him to take the lyrium for now and the romance did not end, there is a point however after that you find him praying and he's angry at himself for taking the lyrium and you can tell him "its temporary" and by the end he's stopped taking it again. But I'm unsure what will happen if you fully encourage him to keep taking it. :/
If your world state included a female mage Hero of Fereldan (eg the one Cullen had a crush on) does he comment on that in the dialogue?
Yes but it's only one line of dialogue. He basically says he had a crush on her but he's over it and that he regrets being a jerk to her later.
While this is more or less accurate, I got a lot more out of it than Eggplant seems to have. I was hoping that he would address it in some way and I wasn't disappointed. I thought the mention was pretty nice, and my inner Warden went, "Aw, Cullen," for his regret about what was said.
Spoiler
You can also ask him whether he ever acted on those feelings, but he says that it would have been inappropriate. Kinda puts puts a damper on things for those players who used mods to have fun with Cullen (I was not one of these).
Not only does he regret that he was "a jerk" later, but also that he told the entire party about is feelings.
At the time, my Warden knew about it, but just ignored it when he said so in the tower. I've also never really been angry with him about it. He had been tortured, he certainly wasn't in the right frame of mind for... pretty much anything =/. I just felt sad about the whole thing really.
