Opening my journal to see 20 different locations with multiple quests, I have no idea where to start and where to stop, especially cause im the type that likes to do everything - but then I dont want to get over leveled for the main quest line.

How are others going about it?

Do some sidequests, level up & get power, do main quests. That's how i did it, if you want to go explore the hinterlands for 20 hours then that is up to you.

After finishing the main quests you can still explore all areas and do sidequests so the choice is yours really.

Basically what you want to do is complete a main story thread and then when you need to collect power for the next story mission go play a new zone. Do the "main" quest of the zone picking up extras a long the way. This usually gives you a good idea of the area and enough power. Skip most of the collect/kill/deliver "x" number of "x" quests for now. They are useless. You might even accidentally complete them a long the way lol. Also do most of the inner circle quests. That's my strategy at least. I felt just as overwhelmed as you but once you get going you get a formula down. And of course leave the hinterlands eventually... the other zones are much more interesting. I wouldn't worry to much about overleveling, you will be mowing through everything anyway unless on nightmare.

I just got to a certain point in my Rogue in the story where the sheer weight of the decisions I was making made me take a step back and take a breath.

Play the side quests until you decide you want to do some main story stuff. That's what I did

Gather enough power and do main quests. Don't fear being "overpowered". It's better than spending hours grinding

Side-quests are quite a bore and waste of time. So unless you specifically feel any kind of emotional desire to finish them - don't even bother (like a quest aout an elf's dying wife or a missing agent)

At least that's how I prefer to play.

As a fellow completionist, you just have to accept that you will likely be over-leveled in this game eventually.   With the non-scaling territories, its just bound to happen.   My first real character I just scrapped after 60 hours since I had outlevelled greatly entire maps.

So I have restarted a new character in Nightmare, and wrote down the relative strength of all the areas so that I can better plan which ones to visit and when so that they remain a challenge.

I love the fact that I have so many choices - my plans change on a regular basis; to me, the sign of a great game.  Gj Bioware.

The problem aint there is to many choices but after the prologue you have only 1 and that is the hinterlands, i believe there should have been another area available after the prologue to give you a choice, perhaps one in orlais, for me that would have been alot better, perhaps split hinterlands in 2 an shove one end as i said in orlais because i also believe as a starter zone the hinterlands is far to big.

If they continue making DA games in this vein there is alot they can learn because imo there is alot that needs worked on, thats not to say its not a great game cause it is, but yeah live n learn sort of thing.

they could also have done with putting alot more effort into introducing the player to new zones or should i say making them want to go there

Well you can also go to the Storm Coast after the prologue , and the Fallow Mire but that's maybe too high levelled.

I said it somewhere else as well, but the non main storyline areas could do with a level indication too. At least then you'd know where you "should" go to instead of going somewhere, finding the enemies are far too high levelled for you and having to leave again.

I can sympathize with this, finally i put an entire weekend over DAI and i reached skyhold (holy ****** **** those 15 minutes before you reach skyhold are majestic) and when i visited the table i was literaly overwhelmed by sheer number of possible task.

Tryed the emerald garden found too hard at the moment and i was starting to be pissed off so i took a break and writing this.

So take a break maybe if you are really without direction check in internet which is the area that you should explore.

Yeah they're smaller zones but they're an alternative to spending so much time in the Hinterlands, and could reasonably tide people over until you get to Skyhold.

I would recommend The Forbidden Oasis or Crestwood after getting to Skyhold.  There is probably more you can do in the Hinterlands and there is also the Fallow Mire.

I've mostly just been doing side quests until I feel like going back for some more main story.

I'm getting pulled in by the main story though. At this point I'll probably just go ahead and finish it before going back to doing everything else.

Also the Exalted Plains, which are gorgeous.

I'm starting to feel this way. This is my first Dragon Age game and I'm very pleased about it.

As a rpg enthusiast, this is what I crave. You get this feeling, even to a larger extent, in The Elder Scrolls.

Best thing to do is chip away and focus on one area. Explore thoroughly. Look for more quests.

There is no rush. Enjoy.

Yes. Every time a new area has become available I feel more and more overwhelmed! I was determined to complete everything in the Hinterlands, but the best bit of advice I came across online, was to get out of there. Jumping into a main story quest has kept me sane, and as I've progressed it's gotten easier.

Like some others have said, I've been keeping my eye on the level suggestion for the main story quests and going off that. I'll run off and do some side quests until I have enough power and am levelled enough, then continue on the main story path.

I've been focusing on the inner circle quests, and then completing other quests that are close by. That has been working well for me.

ah thanks for that, I've done everything in pretty much the wrong order.

I'm just poking around each area until I hit something far more levelled up than me . Can always come back later.

I sometimes feel that way too, but I've come to really appreciate it. I don't always have long stretches of time where I can sit down and play a game, so having so many things available at once means I can pick one that looks doable in the time I have. I can just pick a sidequest that looks interesting or explore a new area without worrying I'll accidentally start a giant plot relevant quest when I have 15 minutes, haha.

I had this 'problem' when I started playing Skyrim too. On my first playthrough, I felt so overwhelmed, like I had no idea where I should go. I put the game aside for months. Eventually I just picked it up and plowed through the main quest. Now when I go back to Skyrim, I take it slow and get into the roleplaying, doing quests with a certain character in mind, and just let myself get absorbed in the atmosphere. Sometimes I make a new character just to do one questline (thieves guild, for example). It becomes a new experience every time.

I'm hoping that all of this content opens up the same thing with DA:I; that after I finish my first playthrough, I can take my time and really dig in.
