And this coming from someone who never really got into Dragon Age. Origins I tried and played about 10 hr but combat was tedious. Dragon age 2 was so repetitive and little bland. I have recently started Origins again and actually really enjoyed it this time around but then Inquisition came out and BOOM! It sort of put all my other games on the sideline. I think its just about the best RPG I have played, and honestly it restored my faith in Bioware is a little bit disappointing Mass effect 3 compared to 2(still a big fan). For me the game is almost perfect and n every way and I am only starting to dabble into multiplayer!

My more detailed review that I posted on metacritic:

1. Graphics.

I play on everything maxed up and graphics range from amazing to very good, strangely, some environments are much better then others. Animations are fluid and good, except can appear a bit rigid during cutscenes. Overall, in most places graphics are breathtaking, and in a great open world - it is just epic.

2. Story

In fact, this is the main aspect of any game for me. Gameplay, graphics, music - yes they are all important but the thing that keeps pushing me to play is the story.

Now here, it does not disappoint - as expected from Bioware, It starts a little full on and abrupt, but quickly engages you into it, pushes you to make decisions and really invest in whats going on.

Beginning lacks any cutscenes, and it is great as you make your own cutscenes through playing! Story and setting are really well crafted

Yes, it lacks deep moral dillemas of Witcher 2, but here you have four races to choose from and three classes too! And these decisions affect not only the gameplay, but story, NPC reactions and your progression. Story quickly develops and really opens up the more you play. Everything has its reasons, and it all feels epic and the scope is epic too - think LoTR. You never find yourself thinking, 'Whats a point of this?' or 'What am I supposed to do next?'.

I dont want to spoil the story for you but trust me, its epic! And you characters, where do I even start? You can chat with them after every mission. they always have something to say or comment on what you have been doing, they chat during the adventures and seem to have an opinion on everything. You can make friends and enemies here , so be careful. Also, unlike previous games and Mass Effect series, here if you play as a mage, you feel as a mage! Or a rogue, or a templar!

And people see you like you are.

3. Gameplay

Now this is important in the game, right? Right. PC controls are a bit tricky and hard to get used to, however, after tweaking them a bit - make A and D buttins do strafe as in action game, and move the view with your mouse buttons(also swap left and right buttons, makes way more sense and can be done in options), you can then play similar to how you would in say, Witcher 2. When you start the game, it looks easy and not complex at all.

However, as you level up you find some things the game does different from others: you dont have to 'waste' skill points just to get to some abilities you would actually use, here every ability is useful from the start, and you feel good using them.

But what really surprised me, every ability or spell has its own place until the very end! They dont replace each other as in other games, and I love it for that! Say, lighting bolt does moderate damage to one enemy, and paralyses him, preventing from attacks or casting spells, mid animation if you can time it right! But Immolate, in fire school, panicks enemies instead, and other fire spell you get, does heavy AoE damage but lack crowd control effect. Its highly tactical, and every active ability also has an upgrade..

What is more, passives here are not just stat boosts - how about surrounding yourself with electrical energy while casting spells?

On top of that, you also have cross class combos! Hitting paralysed enemy with melee ability results in arcs of energy stunning everyone!

Then, enemies have resistances and weaknesses you can see in tactical camera( which is btw really useful in difficult battles).

Guess what? You also have specializations, 3 per class, but to do them you have to complete a quest too, and then reactions of everyone around you changes according to your spec! (hint, people hate necromancers:) )

And there are also ultimate 'focus' abilities too! And did I mention it has crafting? Weapon and armor mods? Selection of mounts to ride? Your keep customization? Potion making? And many, many side quests to do? And quests only involving the dialogue and your wits?

But what about whole inquisition stuff?! You have a large map to plan your next move, you send your advisors to deal with threats(think who you send), you gain 'influence' and 'power' and then use it to move plot forward. You also gain strategic 'perks', you can choose what you like - open up new dialogue options relating to arcane knowledge or let you rogues open locked chests?

Its amazing what can you do here, and the game continues to amaze you as you play, opening up more and more options for you! Lore is very deep, and music is astounding! (there are songs, too, a-la Hobbit movie)

Finally a "not hate thread"

Feels the same here!

and the game is r e a l l y  long if you do sidequests, doing a lot of them on 70 hours yet

I just miss the conversation menu from DA:O which does not give you any hints about what kind of answer you are giving, you just know that if you want to be good, just pick the first option, meh... I like the feeling and the thinking over each answer, kind of miss that, it made the whole difference to me after playing all Mass Effects and going Dragon Age

But so far so good, game is fun and fast paced, I just got over level 20 with ease, but enemies of the same level are a bit tougher than expected sometimes, I believe it would be better on areas description, if it displayed the level requirement so you don't leave weaker enemies for later, to not easy things too much

Great review, overall. Thank you for posting it. The specializations alone are worth mentioning... Dragon Age finally handles them properly. Had to think _real_ hard about being a Templar this time around. :)

A question, though: What Deep Moral Dilemma does The Witcher 2 have that DAI lacks?

I'm honestly asking, because I can't really recall any major dilemma in TW2 besides the big decision between Roche and Iorveth, which is something DAI definitely has (basically a major decision that impacts the rest of the game).

Don't get me wrong, I loved TW2, and I'm not one of those demented people who somehow believe it's impossible to love both DA and TW. But I am curious.

At this point, about midway through DAI (and 77 hours in), I think DAI has more meaningful decisions than TW2 had. Even beyond the Big Decision, there's plenty of choices you make that will affect cutscenes and dialogue in later stages of the game, for example (and that's not counting the war table decisions, which have a lot of impact on war table events).

You can turn the conversation hints off in options.

Is not the hint that bothers me, is the position the answer lies in the wheel, got it?

Just like Mass Effect, on the right the answers are as follows: 1. Paragon/Hero style 2. Humorous style and 3. agressive/renegade style. On the left side you got some variables regarding the current situation.

Don't know if it become a habit or instinct, but you don't have to choose if you want to make personal choices, the only choice you end up doing is "which style I want to follow", so if you always want to be the hero, just pick the first always...

On DA:O you didn't have that kind of "hint", maybe is just me, but I liked that way. And the fact the character did not talk at all when answering, well, I liked because you are the main character (the person behind if you prefer), so the voice is yours, in your head when think about which choice you would do, it took me some time to get it.

But again, maybe, is just me

I just got Skyhold and there have been 3 cutscenes that were memorable for me.

Did not even know about the Specializations until reading this thread! Already crafted myself some nice looking gear but I'm on the lookout for a Tier3 schematic if they exist lol.

I also feel the game is enormous. Playing and beating this on hard/nightmare will definitely be difficult for me! I love the story so far and the Characters are shaping up nicely to talk to =)

I played the game on Highest settings and it really is amazing. Unfortunately I kept crashing with odd errors. I turned them down and a few hours in there was no errors so I just keep it on low for now (sadly).

Well, gamers who dislike Dragon Age: Origins are the target audience for Dragon Age: Inquisition.

That's a pretty preposterous statement to make, given how they pulled closer to DAO in many aspects (from DA2).

Of course, what is really meant is that the game did not try to be DAO+, but instead tried to be just as epic as DAO but with more modern design approaches, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. DAO was an awesome game, but DAI is better.

Regardless, saying DAI is made for those who disliked DAO is just plain silly. You didn't get DAO2, we get it, controls and tactical came work differently, we know. But for a great many players, it's still better. I rather like seeing progress, and DAI is certainly that.

DA:O is an awesome game and DA:I is casual drivel.

I rather like seeing progress, and DAI is certainly that.

If you consider dumbing down, tacticless button mashing gameplay and loads of boring filler content to be progress, then i'd say you're absolutely right.

I didn't like Origins at all. Playing it felt like a chore to me. DA2, for all its faults, got me into the Dragon Age franchise and thank **** it did because Inquisition is most definitely my game of the year. Yes the areas are HUGE, but they are equally beautiful and vivid and I love exploring them. Love all the companions, and while I'm 45 hours in and nowhere near the end, I'm also loving the story so far.

I love Sera's comments on the bard in Skyhold, saying how creepy the song is about her. Good stuff. lol

Amen.

This game was made for me. To waste away hours of the night, lost in a fantasy world where I care about everything, including the Inquisitor I made.

I like to have a voiced protagonist and generally enjoy the wheel, but I would also prefer the responses to be randomly placed. Like the hints in the icons though!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm far from finishing the game and only recently realised that enemies in the game depend on who you side with, which is awesome, but what I meant was - in Witcher 2 even the smallest most menial quest ends up in having to make a decision, and in most cases there are no right choices and you just try to choose the lesser of evils. I had a feeling of 'everything has a cause' in Withcer 1 and 2 and sometimes you just think may be it is better not to side with anyone at all and adhere to your neutrality. But What I LOVE about Inquistion is that Bioware managed to almost do the same meaningful quests and story as a Witcher 2 but with a number of classes, races and in an open world! This is truly amazing.

Well, gamers who dislike Dragon Age: Origins are the target audience for Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I wrote that I have tried Origins lately and actually really enjoyed it(and plan to finish it sooner or later) but then Inquisition came out... :)

I'm also getting a bit addicted to multiplayer at the moment, graphics are worse but for some odd reason its so fun..
