I just got an idea for my own "how to be useful to your team as an archer" video...

It will start with me joining a lobby as archer.
then at the climax I'll switch to a mage class.
and then in the finale I click ready.

But on second thought, that would make for a better katari video.

How to archer... What stats should I go for on my bow? Attack%, critical damage, critical chance, AP? Or what's up with all that?

You should go for longbow of the griffon, punched by the maker, firm winged longbow or trepanners requital in that order.

The best stat is deeps/damage.  The only really noteworthy stats worth deviating from damage would be crit chance if you were formulating a crit focused build (not shown here), and 1% heal on hit because useful anywhere.

Why no explosive arrow love? honestly, i find it a heck of a lot better than leaping shot. The knock-down is great, and it can wipe large groups of mooks when used correctly.

Full draw (no upgrade)

Long Shot

Explosive arrow

mark of death

Full draw + mark of death for big targets

Long shot and explosive arrow to 'AOE' 5-6 mooks at once.

Cant help much there.  Spirit runes can only be attached to staves, fire electricity and ice can only be attached to rogue/warrior weapons.  Each one (at the same level) does the same damage, so it all comes down to resistances and weaknesses.  And from that point on its a crapshoot.  It all depends on the enemy you are fighting at that point.

A few quick questions on the mechanics of the passives:

1. Does Pincushion damage bonus apply to ability damage or just regular shots?

2. Does Pincussion stack up infinitely or is it individual +5% damage stacks that fall off 10 seconds after they are applied?

3. Tricks of the Trade seems ambiguous - does it increase the damage of abilities, or the damage of the status effects like Burning? Didn't seem to affect the damage of Longshot, so I am leaning towards it being a DoT buff more than anything else, but just to be sure...

Also, has anyone managed to stack up enough crit chance to make "Make them Flinched" better stamina regeneration option than Dance of Death? Seems like Leaping Shot would be a good candidate for restoring 100-150 stamina in one swift motion there.

Very true.  Especially when you have an AW spamming Pull of the Abyss!

You could have just said "Get nothing from the rightside branch."

Basically this.

I've got most of the evasion tree skilled up because I've got the Longbow of the Griffon and I draw an INSANE amount of aggro because the people I play with tend not to have as high of DPS as I do I guess.

Strategy

Lead the fight with Full draw to immediately take out the highest value target (dual wield rogues, Fear Demon, Brutes, Templar Knights), then target the ranged units with Long Shot. If melee units get too close then just pop a Leaping shot and knock them down with the follow up. Leaping Shot is also great vs Shield Bearers and Demons (as they cannot block). When the Demon Commanded uses his Fear attack, Leaping shot will clear you of its radius. I use this skill while Long shot is on cooldown.

You have a strong build, and the concept is fairly sound in theory, but I cannot get past this part about "priority targets".

If you are playing solo and/or selfishly, then these are priority targets. Why do I say this? Because they either tend to go after archers first, or they have higher health and thus merit attention of more damage from the start.

The Stalker/Shadows are priorities, this is correct. However, Brutes are essentially the Venatori Pure Tank and should be all but ignored by DPS classes until all enemy DPS classes are gone, just like Venatori Gladiators. Red Templar Knights are Leader classes that buff other nearby Red Templars, and thus they are a minor priority, as are Fear Demons.

Why do I say this? Because I play tank frequently, and I only die if the bloody archer is focusing on a Brute and not the Marksmen that are shredding me apart.

Priority Targets For DPS Classes (in order of priority):

Red Templars

  1. Shadows (dual dagger class)
  2. Archers (basic ranged DPS)
  3. Horrors (a second ranged DPS class)
  4. Knights (leader class)
  • Low Priority: Behemoths, Swordsmen

Venatori:

  1. Stalkers (dual dagger class)
  2. Marksmen (basic ranged DPS)
  3. Spellbinders (control/ranged DPS)
  4. Mages (control/ranged DPS)
  • Low Priority: Brute, Gladiator, Zealots

Demons

  1. Despair Demons (a.k.a. ice troll demon of rage-quit, control/ranged DPS)
  2. Terrors (baby siblings to the Demon Commander)
  3. Wraiths  (ranged DPS with some status effects)
  4. Fear Demons
  • Low Priority: Pride Demon, Rage Demon, Shades

Playing as any DPS class, the most important skill needed is quickly identifying enemies at a distance and prioritizing instantly. I have encountered a small minority of Archers/Hunters/Mages that seem to grasp the concept of Target Priority, and even fewer that understand why each enemy has what priority, and only a select handful that can put it in practice in the heat of battle.

I typically let out a little sigh of sadness when I see an archer in a PUG match, not because you get the occasional "archer tank" that wants to rush through the zones like this is COD, or the one that pulls aggro from the next group of enemies before the team is ready. Those are quite bothersome, but it is kind of expected. No, what bothers me is that the PUG Archer will typically target Zealots, Brutes, Gladiators, etc. first and leave me to be slaughtered by archers. One of them even had the audacity to chastise me for dying with a tank character (a Templar at the time).

EDITED: Tweaked Demon priority a little and added low priority targets.

For some reason Full Draw never gives me 50 stamina on kill from the passive. So unless I find a +50 stamina amulet, I'll probably skip it. Explosive Shot seems more useful anyway and the double Full Draw isn't easy to pull off consistently off host.

Yes, after targeting Full Draw on low priority targets like Venatori Brutes.

I am not saying your strategy is wrong or bad... I am just saying that it seems to be a common misconception that certain "tankier" enemies should be higher priority, which honestly makes sense since they are designed to get your attention. It is how an AI tank "taunts" players, if you will.

With the unique bow that makes your target explode for 75% damage when you kill it, full draw is extremely powerful.  Otherwise it seems kind of meh.  I can kill a full group of enemies in threatening with 1 full draw with the explode bow.  It appears to do 75% of your kill shot's damage rather than 75% bow damage tooltip is misleading.

Prob a bug considering no other weapon in the game has near that damage from a special effect.

i mean it has the same tooltip damage as walking bomb weapon proc but just 100x better.

Slaughter archers above all else, or those Red Templar guys that throw red lyrium chunks like daggers. Then I go for stalkers. Brutes, footmen and shield bearers aren't even on my radar until the field is clear of archers.

Considering that Stalkers can instakill you from the front, I prioritize them above any other RT unit.

Demons

  2. Spectres  (the seemingly weak ranged demons cause weaken and slow, and generally are a pain for tanks)
  3. Terrors (baby siblings to the Demon Commander)
  4. Fear Demons

Agreed.  I'd have put Terrors above specters, but not by much.  Also, just a quick note, DO NOT target Fear Demons to open a fight if you can't kill it immediately, otherwise you will end up spending half the fight trying to keep it from getting behind you.

Those are Red Templar Horrors.

Aside, if you see me in a match, you are welcome to bring your archer to back me anytime. :-)

Yeah, you are right I think. I went back and edited my post to correct it... I even added "low priority" targets too.

Aside, yes, that is why I put Fear Demons as #4 on my priority list, behind the real priority targets, like those bloody Despair Demons... God, I hate those! And every PUG archer I run across ignores them, even when I mark to attack them!

I herd you liek Archers so I put an Archer in your Archer so you can Archer while you Archer.

Seriously, tho, Hall would be so much cooler if he was voiced by Jon H. Benjamin.

Instead he is voiced by Alistair... That goes to show what happens when you have Alistair executed in Origins: He is reincarnated as the class I least like seeing in my lobby. Karma in Thedas!

On a good note: I think Rion is voiced by Jess Harnell (voice of Wakko Warner).

You must not play perilous. Rogues can wipe a whole group if not taken care of quickly.

I have a question regarding "Mark of Death". If the skill is not used within the 8 second time frame, does the stored damage just poof away or is it dealt automatically?

Dealt automatically
