Why should they? They like to do their own stuff. It's the states in America, Their united but each govern a bit differently from each other

Not exactly, we still have an overarching government. The Free Marches are more like the German Confederation.

True. The U.S poped into my mind so I used that

I love how their motto ("Modest"in temper, bold in deed) is so appropriate given the Inquisitor's...bland personality.

Most people hate the Free Marches because they only unit and are cohesive when they're being attacked. They're powerful to be sure, but not exactly cooperative.

That's one of the great strengths of the Marches, I think.

Better to be a bland winner than a french vanilla/classic vanilla/plain vanilla loser.

I wonder if the tarot card is just that.

Noble Trevelyan gets a stallion card and Mage Trevelyan gets an owl card.

Really? My mage!Trev definitely has the Horse too >.>

Look at your save file when switching characters.

For Noble Trevelyan it's Human, Class, Difficulty, Stallion.

For Mage Trevelyan it's Human, Class, Difficulty, Owl.

In the codex though it's a horse. Even if you play as a mage.

I got the impression that the Free Marches were more like the ancient Greek city-states. Fully independent city-states, but they'll occasionally unify in alliances against outside threats to the region.

I dont think Ostwick is a backwater city, its said Ostwick along with Satkhaven and Kirkwall are the only city in the Free Marches that have some kind of power.

Considering you're always introduced as the youngest child of Bann Trevelyan, I would say that whichever parent of yours was born Trevelyan is still alive, at least.

I don't think this is necessarily true. Alistair gets introduced as Cailan's brother or Maric's son quite a bit.

Yes. Starkhaven is like Athens. Kirkwall would be Cornith with its port and trade and Tantervale could be the powerful Thebes. Nevarra is like Sparta if Sparta went on a massive land conquest. The others idk, maybe Ostwick could be like Rhodes or Syracuse.

I dont think Ostwick is a backwater city, its said Ostwick along with Satkhaven and Kirkwall are the only city in the Free Marches that have some kind of power.

On the wiki it says Tantervale is the one with power along with Starkhaven and Kirkwall.

They would be so loosley related that it would not matter. It was like that during the middle ages in Europe and not weird at all even if the people hooking up were closely related cousins.

There's cheese racing in Ostwick? <3 that.

I'm rolling a human quizzy LOL.

Somehow, when I think of Ostwick, I think of a german accent over a UK one

Guys help with class?

Plan on making a human female to romance Cullen. My biggest problem is picking the right class.

I mean, I have it to archer, SnS, or mage. Got my elf mage, so I want something that's new.

SnS seems more likely, but...archer is tempting, but it feels like it won't 'fit' the story

The free marchers almost remind me of america pre unification. Perhaps a future installment we'll be able to unite them and turn them into a republic

Considering their history, and the general medievalness of the setting, they seem much more like the Italian city states to me.

Who rules the Free Marches?

Kirkwall has a Vicount.... Starkhaven has some type of royalty or something? I mean, wasn't Sebastian some sort of heir to the place?

I'm assuming Ostwick has a Vicount or something?

There's no monarchy I guess

The Trevelyans seem to be a bit more devout than the Pentaghasts though, in that a lot of the members of the family who aren't inheriting land and title apparently go into the Chantry priesthood or to the Templars. It's also said that you were expected to follow a similar course in service to the Maker. Of course whether or not your immediate family is a devout as the rest of the family's reputation is up for player head canon. You could always decide your parents were shipping you off to the Templars as a political maneuver (putting a 'second son' or daughter somewhere where they can't challenge the heir) rather than out of any sense of piety.

You can kind of interpret it both ways; either the family is really devout or they are trying to be "More Devout than thou" and ships their spare kids off into service to keep appearances.

I'm pretty sure the Inquisitor's family is the main branch, so pretty devout.
