I was initially pleased to see that our characters could jump a little. That was until it became painfully obvious that this was a required mechanic for collecting shards and generally getting to places. Anyone else finding this frustrating? I see quest markers on Emprise du Lyon that look like I should be able to reach them, but I see no way to get out of the basin that you start in to collect those items - is this unlocked later? I've gone all around the area jumping, jumping, jumping... no joy. And I guess I've probably wasted my time. I just want to complete side quests for the team.

If there's no way to collect an item at a particular point in time, then they really should be shown on the map in such a way that it is clear you cannot yet get to them. The "Seeing Red" quest locations on the coast is a prime example - several sites I tried for ages to get to but realized I had to go through a specific door - which will not unlock until you pass a certain point in the story.

Tired of jumping now - kinda wish I could just say "hey, Bull, give me a leg up" then I'd get over that boulder and be on my way.

I don't mind it for the most part, but there's this one shard near Redcliffe, on the path to the dragon fight, where the shard is on top of this pilar-formation in the center. You CAN get to it by jumping around, but it requires great manual dexterity and lots of patience to jump onto tiny ledges and not fall off, one after the other. To make it worse, there are a couple of places where you can fall to a spot where you get stuck, and have to reload an earlier save, or fast travel somewhere.

Spent maybe 15 minutes jumping around, trying it, and retrying it again and again, and sometimes ALMOST reaching it before falling off. Then I just gave up in disgust. I rather suspect that that's one shard I won't be collecting, despite being somewhat of a completionist by nature. Very, very annoying.

I did that one last night - I know exactly how you felt - did get it in the end but it was stupidly hard to reach!

The Super Mario Bros. theme plays inside my head sometimes when I'm jumping for shards.

Those jumping "puzzles" are made even worse by poor game controls. There is not even a walking toggle on PC (I'm not sure about the consoles).

I collected all the shards , and at times , I hated this quest with a burning passion.

The good news is you can get all the shards , the bad news is ...sometimes it's not easy to find the right jumping path.

I felt like crying a couple of times in the Exalted Plains and the Emerald Graves.

Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen

Jumping? Oh dear. Jumping is the path to the dark side

Jumping leads to Jumping puzzles
Jumping puzzles lead to anger
anger leads to hate
hate leads to suffering

I'll admit getting the shards in Lady Shayna's valley was tricky, particularly as a level 4 character.

Yeah, some jumping puzzles are a pain.  Using a horse is a good method to reach some of them.  The one in Lady Shayna's valley, is fairly easy to get if you jump and stop moving to each ledge.  If you keep running while jumping to each ledge, you will slide down.

There's exactly one shard that has a jumping puzzle. For everything else, jumping is a shortcut.

Many times, it's a shortcut that takes longer than actually going the long way.

Jumping in the game is terrible, adds nothing.
if the devs could never put jumping in a Dragonage game again, that'd be awesome.
About ready to look for a noclipping console command.

I'm sorry for your frustration. That shard took me less than 3 minutes to get. Then again, that pillar was nothing compared to the jumping puzzles in Guild Wars 2 which I have plenty of experience on.

I disagree. In actual combat and quest objectives, sure you don't need to jump at all. However, I find jumping useful for traveling and exploration. Just in the Hinterlands alone, there are numerous hills that you can climb by jumping rather than going all the way around it. I also like how we can jump off of cliffs/stairs/balconies to quickly get to the bottom, or how we can jump over small fences instead of walking around them.

Tip for jumping off of cliffs: I have yet to take fall damage that Barrier could not handle!

I totally share your feels, man.  (I have no idea what that sentence meant, but it was what popped into my head when I read this quote.  I had to learn to love jumping puzzles because of GW2; but the funny thing is - now I do.)

MMO'esque busywork... if anything, it makes sure that I only will do one completionist playthrough this time.

I love ACTUAL jumping puzzles (aka Guilds Wars 2). When it's just "jump around these ledge 50 times, sliding down each one, till you find the right way", that's when it gets annoying.
