I don't think that the "kill or spare the traitor" decision is the only thing that will unharden Leliana.

I didn't want to support Leliana and I said so in the game, but the game decided to choose her for me. I was like whut... but then I tried to stay neutral through the whole "choose the next Divine" thing. I still don't know if Leliana is the default choice or not.
You can make Leliana unhardened and she have a more peaceful ending while still being just as progressive. Which makes Leliana the best choice in my eyes (Viva la free mages)
Unhardened she can't really hold on to her power tho.

The other interesting thing I find with Leliana is that they foreshadow that she's at least CAPABLE of being driven to that point.
