How to make your tank more aggressive and actually initiate fights?

On my NM playthrough I played a mage. I usually initiated myself, and then the tank ran in and grabbed aggro.

As a rogue though, I need my team/tank to initiate first. But when I stealth and position myself, my whole team will stay passive. They just casually walk next to the mobs, then when the mobs actually attacks them - they finally start doing stuff.

How do I make my tank actively and aggressively initiate fights on his own?

Follow > Him/Herself. (for example with Cassandra, behavior: Follow > Cassandra).

In this way the tank will attack the first target in sight (the default behavior - follow > controlled char - instead attacks the target the controlled char attacks, so if the controlled char doesn't attack the tank will not do it).

P.S: the follow > controlled char is handy if you want to stealth kill someone or set traps and you don't want the other party members to interfere by attacking.

Set tank behaviour to Tank follow Tank. Others to defend tank. Chances are they are all defending the stealthed roughe who no one is attacking, hence they have no one to attack.

Also Defend > Him/Herself works too but with Defend not attacking targets will not get attacked. Follow is more consistent if you want to absolutely have the tank attack whatever first target in sight.

But yes, usually tank set to follow him/herself and others to defend the tank is the best overall solution.

Another tactic and the one I use, is using the party commands to have my tank run in as I am either using stealth or gaining a better position. Pro tip: on PC you can right click an enemy and then click "Y" to make all your party attack that target, without attacking it yourself.

Note, I use "Follow:Controlled Character" so its easier to get my tank on a wayward target by attack it. Creates a more seamless game play for me.

Yeah the defend themselves doesn't really work. Cassandra just stands around even if you initiate an attack and she will just wait until SHE is attacked by something.

Follow>tank is the best option.

I switch to tac mode and tell the tank to attack then switch back. Takes about 2 seconds and ensures he initiates before anyone else joins in.

The problem of "Follow > Controlled Char" is that party members will continuously change targets to attack the one you are attacking. This can be either fine for certain strategies and classes, but especially with a rogue is a no no scenario as you don't want your party members to continuously switch from one target to another while you pick up foes to kill (it makes also weaker party members, as mages, to pick up unnecessary aggro).

Moreover the best strategy is usually to have all the party members focus on a single target till it is death, while you instead pick up specific targets (this is even truer for the rogue, in fact) in the process,

Yes and no, I should be more clear. I don't ever use Tac Cam, for personal reasons. Also my tank is the only character with this particular setup. All the other characters are on "Defend:Tank" which in my experience actually make them target the highest threat to the tank. Meaning the mages will not target things that are not already attached to the tank. Also I should say it works better as a ranged rogue, since I'm not too concerned with the aggro portion of the game with passives and Stealth at the ready.

For me simply tabbing through the enemies until the tank has them all is the best way to play on Auto pilot. This is my experience on Nightmare, your mileage may vary.

Yeah, follow yourself with Cass (I also use Blackwall as follow Cass) sometimes doesn't work.  I'll switch to tacticam to setup stuff and see my mage and me (archer) attacking, while Cass and Blackwall are BEHIND us, waiting.

It's random and frustrating, I'll just use the cam to send Cass attacking, then BW will follow suit.  I'm disappointed by the tactics setup (not a big deal, but still), and can live with it; just wish it had AT THE LEAST attack nearest enemy.

So how do you auto it to attack sleeping characters? When I put somebody to sleep, they quit attacking. While that could be good to cool down abilities I want Cole to snick em.

They're programmed to stop attacking when asleep; only mage spells will hit them.  Regular attacks will wake them, and you do not want that, since it's a CC ability.  Unless you go for the combo.
