What happens if you choose Hawke to stay behind in the Fade while fighting the nightmare? Does he or she also die in a blaze of glory like Stroud, or does Hawke somehow escape?

I choose Stroud and was wondering if it plays out the same if you chose Hawke.

It plays out the same way. Though it is never implied that the person who stayed actually died. I say, the wording for that decision was somewhat vague and chances are, the person survived.

It's a moot choice either way.  If you save Hawke and take on the warden's as allies they all die off camera on war table missions.

Best to save Hawke, exile Warden's, and forget you even did that quest.  Aside from the implications in the Fade; the game pretty much forgets Adamant happened.  Also every single companion nets massive disapproval taking the wardens on as allies EXCEPT Blackwall.

The quest was fun but the choices didn't have the long lasting impact I expected.

In my game after doing the war table missions, the Wardens still survived. There were losses but they lived.

Is that like figurative death? Hawke didn't die off screen in my game after taking them on as allies. Also, it should be noted that Sera approves of allying with the Grey Wardens. She hates darkspawn so she approves of them.

Anyway, Cassandra tells Varric that she actually wants Hawke's autograph on her copy of the Tale of the Champion. She won't be denied XD

In mine the final talbe missions said "And despite our best efforts all the Wardens we rescued are now dead.  They did manage to kill all those pesky demons and darkspawn though"

I went... well... that was awesome.

Maybe I wasn't high enough on her approval gate (maybe if we were friends before that mission she might've approved but we weren't), but every single companion of mine lost approval except Blackwell.  I had to go around and recover that loss for a while.

I was tempted to reload my save and exile them, but I really couldn't be bothered to fight Nightmare boss all over again at that point.  Another side frown moment when large decisions are gated behind boss battles if you want to change your mind.

I think it depends on the choices you make at the war table. I choose the Leliana ones, so the Wardens took losses but they survived.

It's a little frustrating that the Wardens are so terribly disapproved of in general. Like everyone forgot that they're needed for the Blight should it ever come back. It's why I can never choose to exile them. It just doesn't make sense.

I think it's more "Oh dear god the warden mages leashed themselves to demons with blood magic from killing the non-mage wardens... and you came from the future and saw that a giant demon army killed everyone in Orelais (presumably led by the Grey Wardens.. witnessed if you side with the mages).  Oh yeah and in your fade vision you saw the Grey Warden's kill Justy V."

But let's give the Wardens hot cocoa and hugs and hope Cory doesn't wiggle his fingers and take them over.

We'll call you if there's a blight, but toodles do not pass go and do not collect $200.

My Warden was a bro and he's out looking for a cure to the calling.  Allistair is on the throne and not doing anything full blown insane (that we know about).  So this nest of Warden's losing their minds... nah.  Peace.

EDIT: In DA:O the wardens were exiled from Ferelden and were recovering street cred.  Exiling them from Orelais just seems par for the course if they can't stop being morons.  Can you imagine because Villager Peon Number 3 and living in the village near Adamant?  "Oh those Grey Wardens will keep us safe!  They fight Dark Spawn and champion the little peopl.... why is there smoke rising in Villager Peon Number 2's house.  Are those Grey Wardens with demons following them around?  MILDRED GRAB THE CAT AND THE KIDS AND RUN!  Maybe the mages will keep us safe."

The moral of the story is that damn near every institution in Thedas is pretty unreliable... except the brothels.

And in the next game the inquisition will be the one that makes some stupid decision that gets the hatred of everyone. Simply put, if the group is not being lead by the player, they become stupid.

Lol, well, the Wardens are kind of a special case, since they tie themselves inextricably to horrible monsters, whereas the Inquisition just deals with order and infrastructure after the whole demon thing is dealt with.

It was not even a question for me. I loved my Hawke and since i built her up in DA2 it was a quick and easy choice to let Stroud take the fall. Now if it was between Hawke and the Warden now that would have been a killer hard choice.

As Sardoni said, the Wardens were just starting to recover in Ferelden when DA:O happened. Still didn't stop them from making it the shortest blight in history.

You can bet that if DA:O had been voiced, Stroud would have been the Hero of Ferelden.  With that in mind, I sacrificed Hawke with nary a thought on the matter.  Die Hawke, die like the game you came from! :)

Hawke lives unless Alistair is there for me.  Logain deserved to die in Origins, so his sacrifice is his redemption.  Who cares about Stroud.  Alistair and Hawke is a tougher choice, but Hawke loses.

Actually the worst part of this decision is that all of these characters are more than likely done for future games, no matter your decision.  Unless they are still in the Fade, alive somehow (the choice did say they'd probably die).
