So I'm playing on Hard, level 11, and I've run into the same problem that has plagued me in every DA game so far- 2H warriors are too squishy. Bull can do a lot of damage but he can't pull aggro like Cassandra or Blackwall can because he gets zerg-rushed to death almost immediately. His specialization, which sounds really powerful in theory, only makes things worse since it's built around trading HP for damage. I've tried speccing him into the Vanguard tree but he still can't build enough guard to survive for long. Am I doing something wrong? How are 2-handed warriors supposed to work in this game?
How to make Iron Bull not die all the time?

Turn the blade from from SnS tree + the 50% reduced dmg from arrows and flanking.
Craft him better armor, pref with melee defence.
Craft him items with guard on hit.
Upgrade your regen pots.
Give him devour but not dragon rage for selv sustain.

At level 11 if he is your only warrior both Challenge and War Cry are essential in my opinion. From 2H tree Mighty Blow (detonator) and Block and Slash as your Shield Wall
Some passives from Vanguard, 20% more damage to taunted by party is significant for example, and you will not have many points left. Charging Bull if you don't use it in tactical as its activated ability. You can Block and Slash in real time. Else, at this stage of the game, throw Barrier(s) on him. If you take Solas around, he can weaken the swarms. Depends on your playing style Battlemaster has good abilities but your points are quite limited. Upgrading Rock Armor tonic is possible quite early, if you have 3 potion slot open, the last upgrade gives 50% chance to enemies get stunned upon landing hit. Lasts 90 sec.
If you want warrior to tank and be left to AI S&B warrior is better option.

Guard by itself is pretty useless, but when you have enough damage mitigation the extra health from Guard truly starts to shine.
As mentioned, make sure to get Turn the Bolt and Turn the Blade from SnS tree. Those passives apply even if you are using 2Hander. Flank immunity is only useful i f you are planning to tank with a 2H warrior, which is not ideal.

Unfortunately on Nightmare I've found that Bull is useless.
I may respec him into sword and shield just so he's not permanently benched.

My party in these games is almost always 2 warriors, 1 rogue and 1 mage. One of the warriors is the tank, and the other is dps. I haven't used Iron Bull yet, but Blackwall does OK as long as Cassandra is tanking for him, and any mobs that aggro onto Blackwall are disabled and/or burned down quickly.

I keep him in the bar in Skyhold, unless drinking too much can kill him, he's safe! ![]()
