I am having trouble keeping my mage alive.

It can nuke well but I can't keep a barrier up for the whole fight and as soon as it drops I get nailed by enemy archers, one hit takes 90% of my health and if Barrier is on cool-down or I am low on mana the second hit takes me out.

Any way around this issue?

Micro manage your companions. I'll usually go into tactical mode and have one of my tanks (Blackwall or Cassandra) taunt them and have the rest of the party focus fire. That's usually enough to keep the aggro off of me. Ignore melee until you've killed all ranged characters.

It's probably worth mentioning I'm playing on Hard. Not sure if I'd have to adjust for nightmare or not. I'll find out in a couple days. =]

Wall of Ice is probably the best counter to archers. Ideally, cast Wall of Ice so that it intersects another wall, and have your entire party hold position behind it; the archers will have to move to regain line of sight.

I start the fights off as a tank when there are a lot of archers, pre-cast barrier on the entire party and the archer tend to aggro me since I'm the first thing they see. Then pop your aoe taunt and switch back to your mage. This is assuming you have points in the spirit tree that reduces your threat.

Unless you're soloing on a rift mage on high diff's, you should have a tank to help with aggro and control.

Anyway, Pull of the Abyss, dps some while they are sucked to the center (they can't shoot when moving), follow with improved veil strike if you don't have lightning cage, if you do have it, drop lightning cage then veil strike for aoe sleep.

Use fade step deliberately to avoid skill shots if they are aimed at you.

But. 1 PoA + 1 LC + 1 CL (chain lightning) = dead archers for me.

Thanks for the advice but I found the reason for my trouble.

I had 300% berserk on my staff hence the almost one-shots.

Now I can take many arrows before going down, which gives me the ability to react or wait for CD's

You should pause the game and start setting up AOE spells and powerful DPS abilities before the fight starts. The archers have to be mostly worn down even before they get the chance to shoot an arrow. This is a must on Nightmare, where you usually get 1-shot by archers.
After that, cast Barrier and move around the battlefield nuking the enemies. Fade Step is a wonderful spell to have. Veilstrike is a decent crowd control ability that you have on your disposal. And make sure you have a reliable tank and enough DPS to take the enemies down quickly.
