Since I enjoy the Dragon Age series and really like Inquisition, I wanted to point out something that appears to be a bug and I suppose some general improvement ideas.

First, the bug:

Repeating banter—while I sometimes do have this silent party member bug, the rest of the time I have the group (Blackwall, Varric, and Solas) going through what feels like the same 5 background/banter conversations the entire game. They had a bit more variation at first, but I’m honestly surprised at how many repeats they get into.

Now for the improvement ideas:

My inquisitor romanced Cullen, and I was quite surprised at the general lack of acknowledgement of that. In Origins, Morrigan always asked the warden about her romantic interests, as did Leliana, and they had general background conversations about it. Dragon Age II had similar interactions. While it’s not a big deal, it just felt odd and made the romance feel less involved than in the previous two games. At the very least, the soldiers should be gossiping about it when you walk past them or people in Skyhold. I even thought Leliana would comment to the inquisitor about it, but nope, nothing. I played as a Dalish and thought that Solas would comment on it.

As a side note, in my play through at least, Cullen would greet my inquisitor with things like “Yes?” half the time, which was a complete 180 from the “I’d hope you’d stop by.” and the like. Again, it broke the feeling that he actually cared about her—I’m not sure if this was a bug with my game or what.

Now if you play a dalish, you can make a choice where your entire clan dies. None of the companions or advisors comment on it. None. Her entire clan just died and no one says anything? At that point, it really felt like none of the companions or advisors even cared about the inquisitor. Why wouldn’t her romantic interest say something? Or Varric who comments on everything involving feelings? Oh, and let’s not even get started on Cole, who is a spirit of compassion. I was in complete shock at the lack of interaction. Something should be done about this or having the whole Dalish side quests seems irrelevant.

So I would have to say that the number of conversations available per companion/advisor/love interest are probably close to the same as in Origins, but considering the extra game time available in Inquisition, the ratio of talking options to game time went down drastically. It made the characters feel less involved than in Origins to me. Not to mention the lack of back story for the majority of characters. You find out a bit, but in Origins and even DA II, by giving the companions gifts, you found out more about them, which made them feel more alive. Right now in DA:I, they feel less like companions and more fighting buddies.
