Here's a way to fix the CPU overuse/game-freezing glitch for multicore processor users

Hi all.

I posted this in one of the help topics earlier, but I thought I should make a seperate one that is easier to find since so many topics are about this issue but many can't find a solution.

If you have a multicore processor (and probably an NVidia graphics card, as I hear that Radeon cards seem to avoid this problem somehow for the most part) and are experiencing freezing, immediately control+alt+delete your way out and get up the task manager. Chances are that you'll see that the masseffect.exe file in the process tab is taking up most of your cpu usage. Even if it doesn't though, there's no harm in trying this method to see if it works.

1) Start Mass Effect and wait until it loads up to the main menu (you can do it as early the Bioware logo, but I suggest the main menu just to avoid any hiccups).

2) Use control+alt+delete to bring up the task bar, then go to processes and right-click the masseffect.exe file. Select "Change affinity"

3) You'll see several check boxes, one for each of your processor cores. Disable all of them EXCEPT Core 0 (the first one) and save it.

4) Your current mass effect game will probably stutter and just be annoyingly slow, so use the task manager to forcefully close Mass Effect.

5) Start the game up again. If it worked, your game should now have less hiccuping than it had before AND will still run the game with far shorter loading times in general, and will not crash on you. Masseffect.exe's CPU usage will also decrease by a good 20/30 percent as soon as you disable all but one core, so that's another way to see it works.

The only catch to this is that your computer might get a bit hotter than it was before the core disabling (my graphics fan kicked in when I first started it up after disabling the cores, when it didnt before). However, it's still minor enough that if your hardware does not have issues you'll be fine.

Hope this helps!

i meet all the required specs for the game, i got a dual core processor, and i've max more demanding games than this, but it seems that i get lots of stuttering and lag at random times and it wont stop, and my cpu usage is sky rocketed. i may try that thanks, but i'd prefer a more proper solution. it seems to me there are a few people having this issues. especially for steam users, such as myself. Thing is the game will run fine for a time then outta no where jsut get laggy, even in the most basic parts of the game where nothing much is happening.
