I just recently unlocked the Mage subclass Knight Enchanter and I have to say it has definitely improved the survival rate with The Iron Bull as my tank. I haven't yet been able to defeat a dragon and I'm lvl 16 so I'm probably doing something wrong; I mostly wanted to make this thread to ask if anyone knows a good combination of skill trees if I want to be a Knight Enchanter. I have my storm skill tree maxed out with all upgrades and Barrier with it's upgrade. Not sure what I should focus in though or if anyone has advice using a Knight Enchanter.

Grab Spirit Blade, Combat Clarity, Fade Shield, and Fade Cloak + upgrade from the KE tree.

Fade Step from Winter.

And Clean Burn passive from Fire.

You can now solo Dragons. The basic strategy is to use Spirit Blade to build barrier and proc Clean Burn. When necessary, evade hits with Fade Cloak and Fade Step, one of those should always be available thanks to Clean Burn.

Of course, that's easier said than done, but not by much ; )

cranked my difficulty up instantly after getting ke. respec my mage and killed the hinterland dragon first try with no potions :D he's ridiculously strong

he's really cool for power play - i actually feel my teammates are totally useless and drag me down. theyr the only ones using potions and it kinda makes me chuckle how weak they are :D

Can anyone recommend some high level magic school abilities for knight enchanter? Fire mine, ice mine, static cage? I know that they're not necessary with a proper build, but just for varieties sake which ones sync up the best with the play style? Would it be best to go high level or just stick with the cheaper grabs (winter's grasp, immolate, energy barrage)?

don't bother with the last skill on the tree, you shouldn't even need it and if you do well odd's are your going to die anyway.

take fire mine as you will be getting a **** ton of aggro lay it on top of you, and if you are high level you could prbably take the upgrades and lay damnnear 2K of damage.

I personally prefer much more to play KE as a normal mage using Spirit Blade only when aggroed enemies come in melee range (that happens many times if you nuke), or against archers and other mages.

Playing it as a pure melee class becomes boring fast.

I plan to play mix of both open with a large CC chargein with fade step and reek havok, gain distance with fade step, nuke then repeat.

the ability to run through people and cause damage doing so is a cool addition as well.

I stopped playing my main KE character for two reasons: a bug that made me skip my mainchar's dialogue in the "Here Lies the Abyss" quest, and the fact that Spirit-Blading any boss or tough enemy was generally way easier than dealing with it conventionally due to Spirit Blade's insane damage bonus vs Guard/Barriers.

1) That's too bad about that dialogue in that quest, but I didn't experience that so it may be your game (run a repair) or just a fluke instead of the class.

 and

2) 2Handers and Tanks gets 1200% more damage against Guards, and Mages Dispel barriers so I don't see how it's so much more broken than theirs?

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the comments and suggestions; I was wondering also if with a KE should I have a back-up mage and if so which build should I focus on it? I kind of want to have Dorian with Necro as his main (looking in to a good Necro build) but if Solas of Viv are good alternatives please let me know! I know having 2 KE (me and Viv) would make combat a bit ridiculous but I'm not too knowledgeable about rift magic or necro either; I currently have Dorian and am focusing in Fire and Necro skill trees and yes, he does have barrier + upgrade.

This class is insane. Started a new mage playthrough, and I'm practically going through withdrawal not being able to play as one (and I'm trying RM this time around, so OTL). I love using my KE Inquisitor in tandem with Vivienne. If you set Spirit Blade and Barrier to preferred tactics, and disable her from using things the AI can't properly utilize like fade cloak, or basically anything but the preferred abilities + winter's grasp, she'll always have barrier up and abuse the class effectively. I did that + crafted warrior's T3 battlemaster armor for her with 280 armor rating and +20% melee defense, she's indestructible... Like, Flemeth and her horcruxes will die for good before an enemy manages to crack my quizzy or Vivienne. Throw in tanky Cassandra with War Cry to taunt enemies from them, and factor in my inquisitor's T3 +36% flanking damage staff with DPS in the 140s...

Also the most boring class in the game.

Using only 3 buttons is amazing gameplay.

No one's forcing anyone to play that way. The Knight Enchanter passives used in conjunction with abilities from other trees allow you nuke pretty effectively while still having the ability to deal damage at close range.

Have fun using tactical cam on the other classes to micromanage. When I play KE on nightmare, I turn off pause during aoe casts and don't use tactical cam and let the fight play out. It makes combat feel so much more organic.

i use all 8 of my skills on my skill bar in almost every battle; i don't just focus skills in KE because that would be dumb.

It's boring only if you play the KE as a secondary tank. If you play it as a nuking mage with close quarter abilities (and with the AOE damage you do enemies will always aggro, no matter taunts from the tank) then it is not boring at all.

It is only that people seems to be like: "I am forced to go in melee and spam Spirit Blade all the time, elsewhere I am wasting the spec" when it's actually all the contrary, in fact. Fade Shield works on ALL damaging attacks so you actually do more damage if you nuke instead than going in melee, and you retain the same endurance (even more, since the barrier increase is tied to damage) as going in close quarters. The only instance in which you do more damage with Spirit Blade is against barriers or guard but also in that case you are more effective if you mix it with other spells (as single target ones like Barrage or spells that allows you to setup combos with Spirit Blade as Lightning Bolt or Winter's Grasp).

So sincerely I cannot understand why people insist to play the spec as a secondary tank. It gives you less damage output with no more endurance and it is much more boring since you always spam the same spell over and over. Spirit Blade is a good spell to use when you are forced in close quarter so you don't have to retreat as other mages have to do and keep fighting (or either to go for targets of opportunity as archers or other mages), but it shouldn't be used as a the primary damaging spell of the spec. If you do then you are making the spec boring for yourself and you either reduce the damage output considerably with no positive returns for doing it.

I do the same thing using a party without KE. It's not something unique to KE the class. It's simply that most people aren't geared enough or don't understand the game mechanics well enough, and can only rely on the simplistic but powerful KE mechanics.

I don't use a KE in my party, and seeing this thread, I will refrain from trying it.

Whatever I'd gain from making my game even more dull and brainless.

fadestep in spirit blade to bits, chain lightning, fadestep out, range for spirit blast, range for mana and fadestep in for spirit blade again. whizzing around like crazy to all the party mambers who are in trouble. friggin' awsome :) but hjea invincible, didn't even break a sweat fighting last boss on hard. is fun though

add fade touched silvrite masterwork to heavy armour and now your really a god.

not only do you get the well known KE perks.............. you get +5 (that's right +5) guard.

near unlimited barrier and 5 guard for basic attack that hits and it stacks.

Lolz. I like to combine KE with the Storm school. It allows me to make people, demons and small furry animals pay the price for their lack of vision. So be it. Jedi.

That's exactly what I do.  KE gives you the best of both worlds....excellent ranged variety, and the option to go into full lightsaber mode when things get hot.  I'm absolutely loving this class.

Actually, there is nothing special with KE in this regard. I play a dual-wield Rogue 95% action mode on Nightmare (probably closer to 99% once I'm past the early stages). There are youtube videos of other players doing the same thing. Playing an archer would be even easier in action mode.

Only class that this would be difficult for would be particular Mage builds.
