I mainly took KE for its focus, being the only actual heal in-game, put 4 points into it on the left side of the tree (so no Fade Cloak), but even with that minimum investment it's very powerful. High damage AND high survivability, with both boosted by same stats because of a single passive. On level 16 I stumbled on a dragon at Storm Coast (it's lvl 19) and, being completely unprepared, decided to try it on for size before reloading and going about my business. Note that I didn't have any barrier boosting passives, and my staff was Tyrbda's (one you get from war table after collecting Hinterlands' landmarks). No Fade Step either. Just spamming spirit blade did the dragon 3 levels higher in.

I have a strong feeling that the very first patch will have Fade Shield passive nerfed into the ground.

I've just started Nightmare with a Qunari Mage, planning on going KE when I get to that point mainly because the thought of having to spending 5 minutes doing tactical cam for every battle makes me not want to play anymore :P

Did Rogue on Normal, got to lvl 17 and most of the way through the story but it's gotten quite boring.

Even without the KE being massively OP, I'm having a load more fun being a mage.

Thought I'd ask here rather than make an entirely new thread; what is the best party to take with a KE on Nightmare? Like mentioned above, I'd rather just go through the game without having to use tactical cam too often. I know the KE is kinda a one-man team on its own, but I was thinking of going with two tanking Warriors and a ranged Rogue. Any suggestions?

Archer or DW? Because DW Rogue is much more fun to play than a mage (both for damage you can do and both for reward on playing well). Sure, it requires more work and at beginning it is a weak class, but once you get the proper gear and the spec (Tempest or Assassin) then everything changes and DW rogue becomes the funniest and more powerful class in the game for what it concerns damage.

It's true however that DW rogue requires strategy so if your concept of fun is to approach the first enemy and bash buttons till it is dead then KE will without a doubt be much funnier than a DW rogue can even remotely be.

Oh ok we have 2 button smash class that can solo any dragon just by 2 button smashing. Its so nice. Lets make alot of appreciation threads. Its good to have OP class so game is cheesy and easy.

Hint: No, this is bs. KE is not fun, and should not be so rewarding and powerful for simple 2 button smash. This is just unbalanced OP. Nothing to love, imo, and praising certainly OP class seems dumb.

Yes, people have been playing the Knight Enchanter and building them in an overpowered immortal way but that is not the only way you can play as the Knight Enchanter and there are other builds for the Knight Enchanter that make them effective without being immortal and overpowered.

Take this for example.

  • Knight Enchanter - 11 (Invest in all)
  • Inferno - 4 (Immolate upgraded, Flashpoint, Clean Burn)
  • Winter - 4 (Winter's Grasp upgraded, Mana Surge, Winter Stillness)
  • Storm - 4 (Chain Lightning upgraded, Energy Barrage, Conductive Current)
  • Spirit - 4 (Barrier upgraded, Peaceful Aura, Guardian Spirit)
  1. Spirit Blade
  2. Fade Cloak
  3. Disruption Field
  4. Immolate
  5. Winter's Grasp
  6. Chain Lightning
  7. Barrier
  8. Resurgence
This setup allows you to genuinely play as a hybrid mage without the worry of becoming overpowered.

Notice that you have area of effect elemental spells for all types of elements and you have a lockdown spell, Disruption Field, that works on everything. Yes, Disruption Field, works on Giants and High Dragons, although only if you trap their legs but that is far better than say, being pointless.

With this setup, you can stay back, lock enemies with Disruption Field and proceed to waste them with area of effect elemental attacks.

If any enemy comes near you, whip out Spirit Blade and start hacking and slashing. If you see a big dragon breath projectile coming your way, use Spirit Blade to swat it off.

If you see an enemy with a lot of guard, use Fade Cloak, get close, use Spirit Blade on them and then retreat to a distance and start casting away.

If shite is about to get real, use Fade Cloak to get away or use Resurgence to give the party a group heal.

With this build, you definitely will not be an immortal mage jedi since there is no Fade Step and it will be somewhat mana intensive since you will be primarily spellcasting as opposed to spirit blade casting, so mana regeneration gear will be helpful.

It also requires quite a lot of skill point investment as well, 27 in total. Of course you can get rid of the unnecessary ones like Fade Cloak's upgrade (not really useful for this build), Disruption Field's upgrade (not really useful for this build), Barrier's upgrade (not really useful since you will regenerate barriers)..Which leaves you with 24 skill point investment in total.

Having said that, this Knight Enchanter build is, in my opinion, the most flexible mage build out there. Your Mage Inquisitor need to be the only mage in the party for this build since you can do everything here from area of effect spellcasting, enemy slowdown, damage negation, healing, and some melee combat.

All in all, just because people have been powergaming with the Knight Enchanter and making immortal Inquisitor builds with it, does not mean we have to just discard it.

It is like Arcane Warrior in DAO all over again. You can obviously make an OP Arcane Warrior Blood Mage Warden or you can just make an Arcane Warrior who stays at range, primarily casts spells and only uses melee it is really necessary.

I for one, in DAO, played an Arcane Warrior who primarily used spellcasting and switched to melee when enemies came up to him or during duels. T'was perfect.

So I decided to do the same for DAI with Knight Enchanter. I feel this is how the class was intended to be played as anyway, as a hybrid as opposed to an unkillable lightsaber spirit blade wielder...

Cheers.   B)

Making the KE not brokenly OP or boring in insanely simple:

1. Don't pick Fade Shield, ever. The only way this skill dosen't make you OP is if you play a pacifist or your gear is horrible.

2. Don't stand in melee all day mashing the same button over and over

Without Fade Shield the class plays more like a skirmisher, zipping in and out and attacking from any range depending if it's safe to melee or not while bringing heavy aoe damage and all the utility that comes from beeing a mage.(Static Cage,Fire Mine, Immolate,Barrier, Fade Step and Energy Barrage is what i use personally)

You acually haveto think about what your doing, take risks and use your party as a team.

I'd recommed anyone who was at some point interested in playing a KE but found it dull and OP to just not take Fade Shield and give it a go. That one little talent just completly brakes the class imo.

@Ishten:

great post, that is how I intend to play my KE too. A fire DPS caster mage, who naturally draws a lot of aggro and needs very strong defensive capabilities. A naturally generating barrier + Fade Cloak as the most effective retreat button in combination with the heal focus ability grants me just that. In addition, the barrier empowers all my fire spells, even more so when using transmute magic, which adds to the damage once more...

I don't even map the spirit blade, since slots are at a premium and I want to stay at a distance mostly, the passives + cloak is all I really want from the KE.

I am not sure about Disruption Field yet, I tried it in Multiplayer, however, it puts the bubble around the caster. Can I aim the field too, like other spells (Immolate, Winter's Grasp)? Otherwise, it's not very useful at distance...

Kensai/Mage - http://www.gamebansh...kensaimage.php

The catch was that once one decided to dual class from Kensai (Fighter) one started as level 1 Mage and was not allowed to use Kensai abilities till one reached the same level with Mage as previously with Kensai. So it was powerful combination, and fun, but it had catch. However, in this game, every warrior/rogue is essentially also mage - their abilities are mage-like. Its in play style.

My initial appraisement of KE was skewed by that one dragon having a spirit vulnerability.

DW. It was alright, my build is pretty solid now and does big DPS, and I'm decent enough at the tactical side of it, I just wasn't having that much fun. Fighting bears and Ravagers and things like that are annoying, where you get hit regardless of whether you're behind them or not.

I found Rogue a lot more fun to play in Origins where the enemy didn't move around so much while fighting.

I don't use a KE in my party, and seeing this thread, I will refrain from trying it.

Whatever I'd gain from making my game even more dull and brainless.

Try using the KE to solo nightmare content as much as possible, and run it as a combination of nuking and spectral... it is great for soloing harder mobs and pushing it. I really miss my dual wielding  dps/tanking rogue from origins, but KE comes close to it, if you push. Also the issue is not in the class being easy... it is in the games poor difficulty settings. Nightmare is nothing but an old school difficulty level, resting somewhere between normal and hard.  By the way, a well built tank is just as easy as the KE.

@ Ishten - great points.  I don't know about everyone else, but I play the KE and a bit of elemental casting (on Nightmare), and I certainly don't feel like my game is broken.  I still have to struggle in dragon fights and only seem to beat the ones a few levels below me.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again.  KE is the game's ONLY class/specialty that offers the flexibility of both ranged and melee combat.  Every other class requires one or the other.  Personally, I really enjoy being able to mix it up, letting my tank take point, then me staying at mid range to do some casting, while the archer and my other mage stay back.  When things go south, I can switch to melee combat.  I love the versatility.

I don't mind using the tactics cam, but honestly, it really drags things out when you're doing this in every fight.

After the endgame, I'll toy around with some different load-outs, but for now, I'll take whatever I can to survive on Nightmare.

I think for now, we can all agree on one thing :- Knight Enchanter is the most versatile specialization in this game.

You can choose to be overpowered. You can choose to be underpowered. You can choose to be flexible. You can choose to go into melee. You can choose to stay ranged like a typical mage. You can choose to be in a purely offensive role. You can choose to be in a purely support role. You can choose to be in a hybrid role.

The keyword here is CHOOSE

At the end of the day, I think they should keep the Knight Enchanter specialization as it is because the strength of the Knight Enchanter lies in the choices you have as a mage who chooses to be one.

I think that I and a few people here have shown that you can play Knight Enchanters in a fun and versatile manner as opposed to being essentially immortal.

The key element of an RPG is choice. Knight Enchanter, like Arcane Warrior, gives players the choice.

Cheers.  B)

You can choose to be overpowered. You can choose to be underpowered.

By this reasoning, every single class in the game can choose to be underpowered. So my Rogue can be ranged, melee, OP, or underpowered.

It's easy. Just run around while your companions are fighting and do nothing! There, you chose to be underpowered. Calling this a choice is more than a bit tautological.

As soon as I read that Knight Enchanters are descendants of Arcane Warriors I immediately deleted my Rogue (which I had 20 hours on by the way) and made a Mage. Arcane Warrior was my favorite class back in Origins so I knew with out a doubt that I'd love Knight Enchanter. The class was all that I hoped for and than some. While the class is most certainly powerful, on higher difficulties you can die instantly if you're not careful.

As for what skills to recommend, that would mainly be the Inferno Tree. Flash Point and Clean Burn synergize extremely well with Spirit Blade. I also find that Immolate is one of the best skills in the Inferno tree because it's an instant AOE that does fantastic damage when the skill is upgraded. Here's a simple low MP combo if you land a crit with Spirit Blade(crit)>Immolate>Immolate; that's an extremely damaging combo especially if done on an enemy that has fire weakness.

My last piece of advice would be not to ignore Disruption Filed. If you time and use that skill correctly on a group of enemies you can pick them apart in a matter of seconds. But if you already have Static Cage then this skill wont seem like much.

P.S I laugh out loud at the people who hate on others for playing a class they enjoy. Live and let live, don't cry about nerfing a class because you don't enjoy it.

It took me a day or so to "get" this class but oh my, once I did, complete game changer.

Fade Shield makes u a devastating tank. The Equivalent of a DW that generates guard. Nigh invincible.

And Decloaking Blast makes u walking bomb against dragons, even if it's just plain weird, ie materializing inside an enemy. But don't try against rage demon. You'll instantly be set on fire. Kinda hilarious, though.

A single skill that makes you invincible with no involvement required whatsoever should be nerfed. It removes all the challenge from the game just because you don't need to do anything at all to obtain that power, it comes to you automatically with no investment involved on the player to achieve such whatsoever. This is the most boring concept in a build you can have. No strategy, no planning, no skill required. Everyone can do the same easily no matter what.

I really cannot understand how people can die with a KE. Practically everyone that tries can solo the game with a KE on nightmare without even a scratch, ffs (and no, not either using particular builds or tactics; simply everyone and their dog can do it easily with almost no effort at all, Hell, there are videos on youtube with KE soloing all the game on nightmare with a tier 1 armor schematic just because it "looks cooler" and you don't need to craft better things; this alone should explain everything already). This is for how broken Fade Shield is (and let's face it; you need nothing else but that damn skill to do it; if you just really want to get a "god cheat" add to that even one single +guard item and you are immortal no matter what, with absolutely no skill or planning required at all; you can simply go and either spam staff attacks only and nothing could kill you anyway).

A thing is having a powerful spec if you build it right, another thing is having a skill in that spec that completely turns that spec in OP with no strategy involved whatsoever on achieving so. To make a DW rogue OP, for example, you have to craft specific materials,  build the character correctly and play it with skill; to do the same with KE you just need to take an early skill in the spec and that's it, you have to do nothing else but keeping attacking and nothing will touch you if you just have even a minimal amount of battlefield awareness.

KE is a life saver, this is why I always take Vivienne.

I used to run away as fast as I could whenever I saw a dragon. Now it's a piece of cake.

It's also handy against big bosses with guard. I kind of feel like the developers just gave us an easy option with the KE class.

Step one = Fade step

Step two = Hold B

Step three = Win

Although it's super OP, it's my favourite specialisation in the game. Range & Melee combat rolled into one. Perfect for all encounters.
