Forgive me if this is the incorrect place for it but I wish to understand something. Swords consistently have less DPS than Axes and Maul on a like-for-like basis. So what's the advantage of using a Sword?

Traditionally swords swing faster so while they have a lower damage they deliver that damage faster and usually work out the same as the higher damage slower weapons.

However in this game they just suck, they are not fast enough to compensate.

I believe swords do more damage per hit. If you look at the "damage" stat (not DPS), it should be higher than for an equivalent axe or mace (or at least, not lower). This matters for skill damage; when you hit with a skill, its damage is based on the weapon's damage per hit, not its DPS.

Hong has nailed it, bigger hits from skills.

Axes have "higher" dps, because they swing faster (focusing on the per second). And it seems like they have a shorter range, not sure though. Anyway, don't pay much attention to the DPS stat. It's especially off if you have a rune on the weapon.

In crafting all three usually have the same damage numbers for a weapon of the same tier and material.
