I've never read the books/played the side games/etc that she's featured in, all I know of her is from DAI, and what she tells you in game. I've also read the Wiki, and it doesn't sound like she's a terrible person aside from maybe starting the mage rebellion. Is that why everybody hates her? Or was she a jerk in her prior appearances?

Mostly people hate her who read the books and disagree with her character. A lot of people feel like she's a mary sue.

I literally just came from a "Which character do you love to hate thread" and I wrote Fiona, funny I see this thread now xD

While I have read Asunder and Masked Empire, I have not read the Calling.

Minor spoilers ahead

1. She started the Mage Rebellion.

2. She agitated the mages before the Rebellion.

3. She said "**** the Divine" even though the Divine was trying to help mages. Reckless.

4. She took advantage of Ferelden's hospitality and forced native Redcliffe citizens to flee from mages.

5. She pledged all the mages to Tevinter. We see what happens in that future without the Inquisitor to stop them.

6. She becomes useless pretty quickly when things get rough, she was pathetic in front of Alexius.

7. She attacks Haven. Like, wtf. While you're loading the Trebuchet, she literally start attacking you alongside the Venatori, no mercy, no words even.

The Mary Sue argument is a bit stupid (since the only thing you could class her as a mary sue for is being magically cured of the Taint - her life isn't a wonderful ray of sunshine - I'd still argue Katriel is a better Mary Sue, even though she dies).  The argument about selling her people (mages) to slavery has more weight.

 

I think Fiona is a bit stupid, but not really worthy of the huge amount of hate she gets.

I dislike her because, aside for voting for rebellion, she SIDED with a Tevinter magister AND agreed for her and mages under her to become Tevinter slaves....despite already receiving sanctuary in Redcliffe by the King or Queen no less.

She still stuck by despite things going wrong and having counts about Alexius.

Same with Clarel. Mages in possitions of power...dealing with Tevinter Magisters *sigh*

Plus she's a moron by allying with Tevinter in the first place.

 

And she's completely unrepentant about the above.

basically she decided that she wanted to fight for mage freedom, but she decided it would be a great idea to deprive mundanes of freedom and try and help tevinter conqure parts of fereldan. But hey now that the mages are free, don't you think it is a grand thing for the non-mages to be obeying the mages?

I don't think she really planed the whole slave thing she seemed pretty surprised by it when alexius brought it up.

I actually sympathize with the Mages and their plight, but I just don't like her for being an imbecile and complete idiot. Seriously? Tevinter?

I fight for my freedom, so I'm going to join with those slavers now. A lot of people already hate and fear us mages, so we're going to give them more reason to hate and fear us! Yay! Tevinter a society where only the strong triumph, and the weak suffer...and slavery, blood magic. Fun time! The Tevinter Magisters will surely enslave us lesser mages, use us as cannon fodder against the Qunari, and they'll literally eat us southern mages for breakfast. *derp*
