Hey.

Could someone help me understand what made Iron Bull the way he is? His personal background doesn't really fit with his personality, in my opinion, so I'm wondering what happened to him?

Well, my background should've made me a sociopath, but-- wait. Bad example.

I just picture what Freddie Prince Jr must have thought when he started reading some of the **** that comes out of Iron Bull's mouth. No idea how he did that with a straight face.

That's why I like him.

He's unique for his position. Very much an individual despite where he comes from. I cant really answer your question fully though, I wish we got to know more about his past. Here's hoping for that in the future.

By his background, are you referring to all the stuff he's done for the qunari, or the fact that he's a qunari in general?

If it's the former, I'd say a lot of people use humor to cope with trauma. It's classic Sad Clown syndrome. And sex can certainly be a form of escapism, so Bull's personality and behavior could have something to do with all that.

If it's the fact that he's not super stoic like "most" qunari, then I'd point to that conversation in DAO where Sten tells you that not all qunari are like him... he's surprised that you'd even think so. The writers probably want to "humanize" (for lack of a better word) the qunari, to get people to understand that despite all the philosophical and cultural differences, at the end of the day the qunari are just people.

Either they really did something unusual when he turned himself in for re-education (listen to his story, etc.), or he's just fundamentally like that despite the whole Qun thing. I recall some codex entry about a female qunari baker who secretly put sugar in the center of the bread she baked as an act of defiance and that it made her smile.

I don't think all qunari are obedient, personality-deficient automatons, so Iron Bull might be some kind of outlier, or he's just exceptionally good at the spying thing and can really inhabit his role as this James Bond-esque guy with coarser humor and swag. :P

Because he is Qunari.

Anyone who made him leave the Qun is an enemy of all DA fans.

I don't think he's that great.

Not to spoil the party. Just saying.

I didn't know the Qun was the equivalent of Dragon Age. I must've missed the memo. It's a pretty big world, for everyone. Not all of us like the same things.

Because even though he represents an enforcer for a tightass oppressive order, he doesn't impose on you unless your a maurading, innocent hurting- well an ass. He does a good job making people trust him. He drinks with the common soldier, cares about them even. He's a bit like Aveline. When your party is a bunch of elitists, it's refreshing to have a nonjudgemental common man who doesn't sneer at you.

Oh, is this going to be a one sided thing?

The OP posted a question. I answered that question. And I wasn't even rude. Try not to be a dick.

Hey, I love Bull, but everyone's allowed to express their opinions. I've seen you expressing your opinions on Bela, others can do the same. :P

Yes, it's called a forum for a reason. A place or meeting where people get together and share opinions. Fancy that  B)

He's a hulking mass of muscular awesomeness. All men want to be him and and women want to be with him. (It's a saying, if you are a lesbian, don't start an argument about summing everyone up as straight. I know, it's happened before.)

Most men want to be men. Not bulls. :)

And I'm not trying to be snide. I've always been puzzled about this with Qunari. To me, the only interesting part about them is their philosophy (even though I disagree with it). I don't understand the fascination with their looks, ever since DA2. To me it borders on Furry territory. Why do people want to get laid by cow men so badly? And this is why I don't like Iron Bull. They play it up to full effect here. I thought it was a fringe fan thing at first, but now even the writers.

Again, just my opinion. Feel free to rip into me. Just don't tell me I can't speak :)

I love Bull. I was kinda cool on him at first because so many previews focused on him, but I'm glad I gave him a chance. He's much more chill than I thought he'd be and his "live and let live" attitude is appealing. I enjoy having him around. Not sure I want to romance him (BDSM ain't my thing) but he's a good friend.

That's actually a memory that Solas found in the Fade and tells you about. ;)

Not gonna rip into ya, just giving my perspective lol. I'm fine with these kinds of things knowing I can separate my fantasy from reality. I romanced Thane and Garrus in the ME games and imo that's much further from human than the qunari. The qunari, in my opinion (and especially in DAI) are quite human looking. But heck, if I'm playing a fantasy game a character could look as weird as they want, if they're awesome and an LI I'll consider them. Especially when I can play as a non-human race myself... although I did romance Bull with a human. I mean, elves and dwarves are just as non-human as qunari, they just happen to look slightly more human. And I get the feel from playing the game that those kinda cross-race relationships aren't really that weird in Thedas, but I can understand people who dislike them.

One thing I'm actually hoping for one day is a female LI that is non-human and isn't completely safe 'almost human but not quite' looking like Liara. I think that'd be interesting.

Thanks for answering. The thing I find different about Thane or Garrus is that most would consider them to touch more on personality. The attraction in fans is of the heart, etc.. People rarely get into detail about Garrus, physically. Or put it so literally, like "taking a bull's ****" With the Qunari, the conversation always gets physical. And in the game, it's more in your face. Not just for romancers. Garrus never talked about banging all the time. Or screwed other companions. Or priests.

But anyways. It's just my opinion. I'm just here to disagree on the idea that "everyone likes such and such" or "all men want to be Iron Bull". I don't think so. If I wanted a fratboy, I'd hang out with all of the ones I know. We could light our farts on fire, drink the night away, and gangbang random women at truck stops. And at the end, we'll take selfies together and post how awesome we look on facebook. ;)

I don't like him. They've made a mistake making two similar same-voiced characters in a raw. Each time I talk to him , I expect him calling me 'Lola'. Even his scenes are awfully 'Vega-like' - e.g. the scene at the bar and the scene with an Inquisitor in disguise. Same for the speech patterns.
