I found the Superior Battlemage Armor schematic on the Hissing Wastes merchant.

Seems like the extra stock from Josephine's perk changes often.

Really? That's annoying.

Is Superior Battlemage Armor the blue T3 one? All I've been able to buy from the Hissing Wastes dog is the Sturdy Battlemage Armor for 8000 or so, and I have Josephine's Short List perk.

It's this one. The short list perk seems to only add one item at a time to the merchant stock, but there are several different possibilities for each merchant.

Ah, thanks for the pic. This is a very helpful thread, I've been struggling to find accurate information about schematics and merchants.

Do we generally think that Superior Battlemage Armor is the best T3 mage schematic? 15,000 is a fair bit of money to drop if I'm just going to move onto something else later...

I haven't been able to find Tier 3 versions of the enchanter's coat or mail, which is weird, and I'm not even sure how the tiers or naming systems work.

(Does it go [no name], [Sturdy], [Superior] for quality, and then Apprentice/Enchanter/Battlemage for the tier level?)

It's going to depend on your playstyle in relation to what the material layout is. For example if you want offensive cloth, the superior version of the schematic offers none. In that case, the other versions would be superior to the superior.

Another thing to keep in mind is looks. I am personally using the non-sturdy version of the battlemage armor because the sturdy version uses the masterwork material to judge final color, while the non-sturdy version does not. Superior version unknown what the color palette is like, I haven't been able to get in game yet this morning.

Now I just need to go research what offensive cloth does :P

I have sturdy battlemage mail which happens to look exactly like sturdy battlemaster mail but without the chainmail arms. What were they thinking?

Now I just need to go research what offensive cloth does :P

Well let's see together, I'm sure this will help others as well :)

Starting with Cloth:

Offensive

  • % Heal on Kill
  • % Barrier Damage
  • % Attack
  • % Crit Damage*

Utility

  • Willpower
  • Magic

Defensive

  • % Healing Bonus
  • Resist (Electric, Spirit, Fire*)
  • % Magic Defense

Leather:

Offensive

  • % Crit Damage
  • % Crit Chance
  • % Flanking Damage
  • % Bleed on Hit
  • % Armor Pen*

Utility

  • Dexterity
  • Cunning

Defensive

  • % Bleed on Being Struck
  • Resist (Cold, Fire)
  • % Ranged Defense

Metal:

Offensive:

  • % Armor Pen
  • % Stagger on Hit
  • % Attack
  • % Bleed on Hit*

Utility

  • Constitution
  • Strength

Defensive

  • % Stagger on Being Struck
  • Flat HP
  • % Melee Defense
  • Resist (Fire*)

(* Denotes Dragon Material Bonus, if unique to dragon in that class of material)

With all of that in mind, let's bring it back to what we were discussing.

First, the Sturdy Battlemage Armor

vwDC2Vw.png

So this armor would offer leather class defenses, so resists and % Bleed (which is bugged @ time of this post). It would offer +Willpower or +Magic.

The non-sturdy Battlemage Armor

EPgBawb.png

So here, you'll be trading off leather class resists for raw HP or melee defense.

Lastly, the Superior version (image credit magentaman215)

jLS2VRw.png

Here we have 2 more utility cloth than the others, that is even more +Magic or +Willpower. You lose all leather class resists in favor of Cunning or Dexterity. Metal defense will still offer raw HP or Melee Defense.

In closing, each schematic is different, and each schematic will be valued differently by each individual player, depending on their play style. For me personally, I want to get the Superior version because it offers Cunning instead of resists, meaning I gain +Crit Chance. I still don't have the schematic, but even then, once I get it, if I don't like how it looks, I will be ok with not gaining the Cunning in order to look better to myself. There's a lot of variables that go into choosing which schematic will work for you, I do encourage you to experiment! All in all, you need to think about how you're playing your character and then decide so you can be 100% happy with your decision!

That was fun to type! I hope it helps! ^_^

Does anyone know of a good masterwork/Tier 3 staff schematic that has the appearance of Freedom's Promise from DA2? I know there's a rare/blue staff called Virulent Staff in game that sort of has the aesthetic I'm going for, but I love the idea of making your own weapon instead of finding it out in the open.

Also, slightly off topic, but I know you're able to craft certain armors without class restrictions using silverite or snofluer skin, and I was wondering what the dalish scout armor looks like on a male elf? (I know it has the appearance of Merril's default DA2 outfit, but I've yet to see a male elf wear it.) I'm trying to make a male elven inquisitor, and the dalish armor options for mages don't really suit him, I guess. Same thing with the options for the staves in game. As pretty as they are, I'd like a staff that looks like it'd belong to a Keeper or a First instead of a Circle Mage.

I found a Sturdy Battlemage Coat schematic in Sulevin's Cradle which has the same armour rating and slot numbers as the Sturdy Battlemage Armor, but I don't think there's a Superior version of it.

(I'm not sure if Superior or blue schematics for armor even spawn in chests, I've only found Masterwork arms or legs so far)

Also not sure if there's a Tier 3 Sturdy version of the Mail.

There are three ranks for Tier 3 armor schematics, and 3 types for each class.

Rank 1: [Battlemage, Prowler, Battlemaster] [Coat, Armor, Mail]
Rank 2: Sturdy [Battlemage, Prowler, Battlemaster] [Coat, Armor, Mail]
Rank 3: Superior [Battlemage, Prowler, Battlemaster]  [Coat, Armor, Mail]

From farming the Cradle, I have found all of the Rank 1 and Rank 2 schematics, in addition to the following Rank 3 schematics:

Superior Prowler Coat, Superior Prowler Mail, Superior Battlemage Mail

I don't know if the Superior Battlemage Armor schematic is only purchasable with Josephine's perk or if it also in the drop pool.

I have a superior battlemaster coat which I got there among other schematics, therefore, there is a superior version of the battlemage coat.

Do you have any screens of the superior schematics? I'm curious to see how their stats differ from the ones I have.

how does the short list perk work? does it update from time to time the merchants items, or only updates it once?

Sure. Here are the 3 that I have. Also, does anyone know where to get the Masterwork Sentinel Shield recipe? Is it from one of the operations?

All merchants will sell you their top quality items that was otherwise unavailable without short list perk.

That wasn't the question. The question was whether their inventories were updated once or several times.

And the answer to that question is that each merchant occasionally changes which of several short list items he is selling, but I don't know whether it is based on clock, on area transitions, or on something else.

Take the Hissing Wastes merchant - his extra item is a Superior T3 armour schematic, but which it is changes between the different superior versions of the T3 armours and hats, so you cannot be guaranteed that he has exactly the version you want when you visit him.

This can be very annoying as - in my case when I first discovered the changing inventory issue - I'd first noticed that merchant having the Superior Battlemage Armour, which was nice as my Inquisitor is a mage and I run a two-mage party, but decided not to buy it immediately and changed zone to deal with some companion sidequests. Next time I visited he was selling the Superior Inquisitor Hat, and I gnashed my teeth. A few hours later after doing other stuff I was back and he was selling the Superior Battle...and my heart swelled with joy..master Armour, and I gnashed my teeth again. I wanted the superior T3 mage armour I'd refrained from buying earlier, not the warrior version. I'll keep visiting him regularly and he'll probably be selling the right armour again.. sometime. :D

EDIT: And he did. A level later on one of my semi-regular visits, I got the Superior Battlemage Armour schematic. Added to the Superior Inquisitor Hat I bought on an earlier visit, my mages can now get superior T3 armour in both head and chest slot.

Hm, so there is a schematic for Superior Battlemage Mail as well as Superior Battlemage Armor.

I did some googling before and it sounds like nobody's been able to find a Superior Battemage Coat, so I wonder if it's just a super-rare item in random chests?

I believe the Witches Staff (tier 3 standard so quite strong) will give you the look you're going with, that can be comboed with thorny grip for a old beat up looking staff.

Wow, great thread guys, I'm really loving it.

I've been trying to get the schematics for Superior Battlemage Armour but I've not had any luck, but somehow I've managed to find a lot of other great items. Here's my process:

1) The Short List Perk
2) Travel to Val Roy, Check merchants
3) Travel to Emprise Merchant (in Stronghold)
4) Travel to Hissing Wastes Merchant
5) Back to Skyhold & check merchants.
6) Save Game
7) Alt-F4
8) Turn Clock forward by 12 hours (???) 12 hours didn't work, so I'm now trying 24 hours.
9) Start DA:I and Load Game
10) Repeat from 2 onwards.

The merchant keeps restocking schematics! So far I've got the Overlord Helmet (Masterwork Tier 3 Rogue Helmet) and Superior Battlemaster Armour (Masterwork Tier 3 Warrior Armour)

Will keep you updated on what else I find!

Update 1: Did Step 8, didn't work. Odd.
Update 2: Skipping 12 hours gave Emprise Du Lion Merchant "Dwarven Proving Shield" (Blue)
Update 3: Skipping by another 12 has given Emprise Du Lion Merchant nothing. No schematics or rares. Heading to hissing wastes.

After skipping forward by 24 hours,Hissing Wastes Merchant has given Superior Venatori Helmet (Masterwork Tier 3 Schematic)

I'll try and get this puzzle solved and find out if Time changing does work. Will try and skip forward by 25 hours just to be safe.

I guess it's all bloody RNG based. Urgh.

Can some of you here tell me what you did in order to gain certain schematics?

In my experience you'll get better results skipping forward only one hour. I saw much more variation that way.

Hrm, I gotta say I think that's working well for me.

I go to Skyhold. Save. Close game. Skip forward 1 hour. Reload save. Check merchants in Skyhold. Save game and head to Val Roy -> Emprise -> Hissing and each time Hissing Wastes merchant has had something new.

So far it's been a bunch of armours for sale:

Masterwork Battlemage, Battlemaster Armour, Superior Battlemaster Mail, Superior Prowler, Masterwork Battlemaster Coat, Superior Battlemage Mail... no schematics. This is not fair, I have all the superior armours I want except the battlemage hahaha, damn you RNG!

Not faiiiiiiiiir!

Are you closing the game and THEN changing the time or are you changing the time while ingame?

Update:

I FINALLY GOT IT!

That only took what.... 1 hour. Atleast I managed to get a bunch of others as well, heh.

2Q4lWgA.jpg

What to do:

1) Have "The Short List" Perk.

2) Go to Skyhold. Save Game.

3) Close Game. Change the time (+1 hour) on your clock.

4) Load Game. Check Skyhold Merchants. Save Game. Load the save again.

5) Go to Emprise, check merchant.

6) Go to Hissing Wastes Merchant. If he has ANY masterwork schematic then buy it. If not, go back to Skyhold. Save game.

And now repeat from 3 onwards until you get it. Phew! Thanks everyone!
