Just out of curiosity , what do you guys mean when you say farming?
Just doing the same thing over and over again, hoping to get a better Item.
I must say, I did this (combined with chest runs) mysef, but I'm not sure, why. There is not much need, since you can buy decent tier 3 schematics from the vendors anyway.

Hm, so there is a schematic for Superior Battlemage Mail as well as Superior Battlemage Armor.
I did some googling before and it sounds like nobody's been able to find a Superior Battemage Coat, so I wonder if it's just a super-rare item in random chests?
There is no need for it. The Superior Battlemage/Battlemaster/Prowler Armour available from the T3 merchant takes arm and leg attachments.

An updated hypothesis on how Short List works based on some structured testing this night.
It appears to be really simple:
- Each merchant appears to roll a random Short List item amongst those he is eligible for each time you enter the zone. Either that or some fiendish list of permutations is used.
- I didn't perform enough tests to determine whether the choice between Short List items uses an equidistribution or not.
- In-game time and the system clock do not appear to be a factor at all.
Tests performed that support the hypothesis:
- Using fast travel back and forth between Emprise du Lion Keep's T3 weapons' merchant and Val Royeaux's two rooms right at the entrance, whose merchants have multiple-item shortlists, checking the merchants on each visit, I noticed how I'd get different permutations in Val Royeaux's shops each visit though sometimes some of the merchants had the same item as on last visit, and how the T3 weapons' vendor usually had a different weapon. It is not clear whether all items were equally likely or not. I saw the Staff of the Void frequently, but the number of tests was so low (eleven) that nothing can be concluded one way or the other from that. There were five merchants present in the two rooms in this test series.
- Using fast travel back and forth between Western Approach's Keep merchant and Crestwood's Keep merchant I noticed that they usually got a new Short List item chosen when I visited (but not always). Nine visits in this test series.
This isn't enough data to conclude that this is how the game works, but in lieu of counterexamples I'll use this as my working hypothesis.

Item Level 19
+7% Fire Resistance
+11 Willpower
+7.5% Extra Focus for Each Enemy within 8 Meters
Light Arm slot
Light Leg slot
Restriction: Mage Only
Requirements: Level 16

35k? Are you serious?
Based on the stats it looks like an average T3 Mage Armor. One could easily craft something equal or better with the Schematics bought in the Hissing Wastes for 8k.

Here's a screenshot of the superior battlemage coat. It definitely can drop in Cradle of Sulevin. Anyone mind posting the Dalish Keeper Robes schematic?

^That schematic is sold by the dalish vendor in Exalted Plains once you get enough reputation for helping the clan.

I already bought one of the armor schematics from the hissing planes merchant because I didn't now the inventory could change. But now it seems it stays the same forever? Now he only sells sturdy ones and the templar one. So am I now just stuck with the same armor for the rest of the game? I already have the same since forever man ![]()

Not so, laz0rbrain.
I ended up getting the Superior Battemage Armour, Superior Inquisitor Hat, and Superior Venatori Helmet short list schematics from him before I got bored of trying to also get the Superior Battlemaster Armour schematic (which amusingly was the one on sale when I met him the first time, at which point I didn't buy it because I only had enough for one superior armour schematic at that time).
I fully expect that if I kept trying I'd eventually get Superior Battlemaster Armour schematic again instead of those non-schematic armours that are his short list. Hmm, actually, that makes me wonder whether buying out those non schematic armours from his shortlist would increase the odds of getting the Superior Battlemaster Armour schematic or whether he'd just not have any short list items available most of the time. Something to test another time, I guess.

1) Have "The Short List" Perk.
2) Go to Skyhold. Save Game.
3) Close Game. Change the time (+1 hour) on your clock.
4) Load Game. Check Skyhold Merchants. Save Game. Load the save again.
5) Go to Emprise, check merchant.
6) Go to Hissing Wastes Merchant. If he has ANY masterwork schematic then buy it. If not, go back to Skyhold. Save game.
And now repeat from 3 onwards until you get it. Phew! Thanks everyone!
I have been doing this for more then two hours now. No schematic change.

^You have to move between areas. If you save/reload in front of the merchant the inventory won't change.
Save at skyhold, exit your game and adjust your clock, then start the game and go to hissing wastes. That's how I got the schematic I wanted.

Quick question on this. Do you need to leave items unpurchased for vendors to update? I bought every schematic avialable from the Hissing Wastes vendor, but because of the way short list seems to work he only had one Superior schematic, I'd like the others but he doesn't seem to be updating at all.

Yup same here, I haven't seen a schematic change in many levels, and I am starting to suspect that buying out his superior schematic inventory whatever that limit is just neuters his stock for the rest of the playthrough. All that seems to be updating are his stock of armors and weapons but no schematics. Specifically I've been looking for Superior prowler armor and only the mail has dropped after many Cradle runs.

These are a lot of conflicting reports! I hope the last one is the accurate one becuase it would be a lot easier to check in for armor schematics if I don't have to save, shut down, and reload every time. I'm going to start hopping back and forth between Emprise and Hissing Wastes to see if their stocks change and see what happens.
Alright! So I just tried it out, zoning between histing wastes and Emprise Du Lion to check for schematics and so on, and was pretty sure that it wasn't working, when lo and behold at the Emprise there was a star over weapon schematics, and it had a masterwork sten sword grip. Therefore, it looks like zoning back and forth will roll randomly on a table of possible Shortlist Perk wares and add them to the shop's stock. This will make grinding for armor and weapon schematics really easy! As a protip, if you get on your horse, you can beeline straight for the hissing wastes merchant and drop down the cavern and you'll be fine, too!

Nice thanks for this, is this only a chest drop, or does it have a chance to appear with the Short List perk?

Ok I have successfully got schematics (the prowler one) to show up. Do you need to buy it to get the battlemage? So far that's the only schematic I can get with cycling the system clock.Hrm, I gotta say I think that's working well for me.
I go to Skyhold. Save. Close game. Skip forward 1 hour. Reload save. Check merchants in Skyhold. Save game and head to Val Roy -> Emprise -> Hissing and each time Hissing Wastes merchant has had something new.
So far it's been a bunch of armours for sale:
Masterwork Battlemage, Battlemaster Armour, Superior Battlemaster Mail, Superior Prowler, Masterwork Battlemaster Coat, Superior Battlemage Mail... no schematics. This is not fair, I have all the superior armours I want except the battlemage hahaha, damn you RNG!
Not faiiiiiiiiir!
Are you closing the game and THEN changing the time or are you changing the time while ingame?
Update:
I FINALLY GOT IT!
That only took what.... 1 hour. Atleast I managed to get a bunch of others as well, heh.
What to do:
1) Have "The Short List" Perk.
2) Go to Skyhold. Save Game.
3) Close Game. Change the time (+1 hour) on your clock.
4) Load Game. Check Skyhold Merchants. Save Game. Load the save again.
5) Go to Emprise, check merchant.
6) Go to Hissing Wastes Merchant. If he has ANY masterwork schematic then buy it. If not, go back to Skyhold. Save game.
And now repeat from 3 onwards until you get it. Phew! Thanks everyone!
Also - why go to the other merchants? The mage armor apparently only shows up at hissing wastes merchant.

I have saved the chargers and complete Bulls questline including the operations and does not have this staff schematic. So it's maybe on the other decision branch or the operations reward is random or depends on the agents used for the operations. So yes, you can miss it.
Same here. I completed the quest last night and didn't get a schematic.

Also there's the masterwork archon staff, it's the reward for completing the final operation from a series unlocked after completing Bull's personal quest.
Does this mean that you have to sacrifice the Chargers in his quest and encourage Iron Bull to remain with the Qun? I'm not doing that.
