Personally, I feel as though this game shouldn't have been called Dragon Age: Inquisition.
It should have been called Dragon Age: Truth Bombs.
Just gonna throw my crazy-ass theory out there:
The elven gods are the old gods and the Archdemons, I think they create the blight as a form of revenge to the people that betrayed them in the first place, who I think is the ancient elves. Fen'Harel/The dread wolf/Solas is seen as the betrayer or scapegoat by the elves because he is the only one that managed to out-smart them and avoid their betrayal.
I think the ancient elves felt powerfull enough that they didn't need gods or deemed themselves more powerfull than gods and waged war with them. The ancient elves were immortal, but I think their PHYSICAL body could be destroyed by the gods, so the gods turned them into spirits (some of which turned into demons), forcing them to spend the rest of their "immortal lives" in the fade, which is why Solas is so fond of spirits. In return, the left over ancient elves (as there are some who avoided the gods' punishment, proven in the elven temple) banished the gods to the fade as well and then sealed away all evidence of this and protected the sources of this knowledge (well of sorrows? maybe?).
Elven gods get angry that they're stuck in the fade forever and start the blight. Tevinter magisters enter the fade and see these angry gods, the angry gods take their chance and turn the magisters into their pawns, aka the first darkspawn and proceed to create the army of darkspawn. First blight begins, yadda yadda yadda.
Mythal either was the firs archdemon but found a non-darkspawn body willing to be her vessel (this is why Flemeth says to morrigan that she needed to be willing in order for flemeth to take over her body) and thus avoided further corruption or was never corrupted at all. Or maybe Flemeth was corrupted but not enough to completely corrupt Mythal and that's where the Dark Ritual comes from.
Fen'harel/the dread wolf/solas was never corrupted but tries to free the old gods and he needed to use the elven orb thingie for that. For some reason he thinks the best idea is to hibernate but once he wakes up he's no longer strong enough to use the orb, so he gives it to corypheus. Oops. Big mistake.
Now that the orb is destroyed, Solas needs even MOAR POWAH and as such seeks out Mythal to absorb her power, but it was HIS mistake that he gave the orb to cory so he feels that HE should be the one paying the 'price' and be absorbed, but he can't because .... the people need him and apparently mythal can't do that for him. Or something.
Considering my luck with predicting **** (I could've sworn Flemeth was Fen'Harel or at least Andraste lol but the statues in Mythal's temple were REALLY obvious, the armor on them and the wings just screamed HELLO IM FLEMETH), this is probably as accurate as a potato.
The elven gods are the old gods and the Archdemons
Maybe "elven gods" are to the ancient elves as dwarven Paragons are to dwarves. Just revered individuals that embody something meaningful to the ancient elves.
Maybe "elven gods" are to the ancient elves as dwarven Paragons are to dwarves. Just revered individuals that embody something meaningful to the ancient elves.
That was my interpretation as well.
What I find odd is that this could also apply to the Maker. That'd be interesting. Then the Maker would become a symbol of whatever people choose to believe, the same way the Herald of Andraste was.
Here's my theory: Solas and Mythal were/are trying to revive the Golden City and thus the Old/Elven Gods.
When the post credit scene first opens, Flemeth is seen pushing a soul (likely Keiran's/Urthemiel's) through the Eluvian. Now, whatever happens to FleMythal, what happens to Flemeth's body once the soul leaves it? It turns completely black. Black, like a certain city a certain blighted Magister found "empty."
What did Solas/Fen'Harel do with the old gods? He locked them up, outside of the Fade, and basically went to sleep. Some old god/elven god had nearly killed Mythal, likely playing a large part in driving him to do this, but unbeknownst to the Dread Wolf, locking away the gods created new problems, and with her body near death and locked away, Mythal was forced to find a new vessel.
But what about the Blight? Consider Dorian's explanation of how the Tevinter choose to remember how the Blights started. Essentially they disavow responsibility. What if this is more or less correct? What if the Magisters entered the City, which was already Black? They did become tainted, but their actions did not in and of themselves create that taint. The Blight and Darkspawn which came from that, resulted in a cycle Fen'Harel had not anticipated - the old gods were not merely locked away any more, they were being sought out by the now Blighted Magisters and Darkspawn, corrupted and, shockingly, eventually destroyed.
The example I'm going to use is Lyrium. If the city was a living thing in and of itself, and Fen'Harel, in his rage locked away the things which kept it "alive" (the old gods) then much like Flemeth, it would turn black. However, much like lyrium, it would still have power and still have the power to effect other beings. What if the City, like red lyrium, basically became infectious? Enter the Magisters, begin the Blights. (I also have a connected theory that Lyrium, being a living thing, is actually a result of some kind of proximity to an old god soul. It of course grows out from the spot, but how else could living magically potent rock come to exist if not a close proximity to beings for whom magic was a natural as breathing...indeed magic was a biologic function).
This explains not only Solas's sadness when talking to the Inquisitor at the end, as he more than any others realises that the return of the old gods is far from ideal, but he sees the world, and Flemeth, decaying and degrading. So Flemeth returns an old god's soul to the City, and becomes as much a part of Solas as his heart. Solas not only apologises to the Inquisitor - If you go through certain dialogue choices and express the belief that even with great power so long as one continually tries to do better, learn from their mistakes, and keep going, everything can be made right and good - Solas expresses warm admiration and agreement. Solas has been trying to find a way to help his friends (the old/elven gods) and his people (at this point basically all people not just the Elves {who he certainly does not see as "like him"}), and has been failing despite having great knowledge and power. Things have not been going according to plan for Fen'Harel and Mythal, but that doesn't mean they won't keep trying.
Where is sandal is he in the game and when do you meet flemeth
I see your point. Here comes my but thought
... Aren't we suppose to treat the information sources in the game as "real"? In-game real I mean. If yes, then the "truth" as heard from Solas could also be diluted. Remember he is the great trickster or deceiver. What I'm getting at is, we can not simple dismiss the other sources of information as non-important. Solas can not and should not be the only source of information referring to the Dales. I refuse to accept this. Otherwise the tidbits of information littering the game here and there are nothing more than garbage in the game. I have come to understand the information in this game to be a type of puzzle. Just like the Dalish information is taken with a pinch of salt so should the information from Solas be treated as well.
You are correct, of course. Looking over my posts, realize they read as if I was taking Solas' dialogue as law. I'm not, not at all. What I meant specifically pertained to the Dalish legends we been wondering about since DA:O, and how his dialogue makes it highly likely that they're unreliable at best. Which is not to say that Solas' information is the 100% real deal, he obviously didn't tell us everything (hoo boy did he not tell us everything), and he bent a few things here and there, to avoid showing his hand.
I think we can try to go through it like a detective.
First, Solas supports the Inquisition right away, so we can assume, Cory's opening of the veil was not what Solas wanted. So he wanted Cory to do something. Cory however seemed strangely... dull for a "bad guy". It can be assumed, Cory wasn't really aware who Solas was, otherwise Corys outcry to Dumat to "help him" would not be there. But what DID Solas think Cory would do? I have the impression this is the weakest part of the story, because Solas just handing the Orb to Cory without any real instructions... could he not forsee that Corypheus would do exactly that? That sort of miscalculation either reveals an unexpected stupidity in Solas, or a weak part of the Plot from Bioware.
Second, we must assume Solas did not want to raise any suspicions. If one has to hide his true identity, we can guess he will agree with the Inquisitor. Reversly, we can thus assume where he critizises the actions of the Inquisitor, he is genuine. And in these we have the following:
- Solas heavily critizised me killing the Elven Priests in the Mythal temple, as a waste, destroying the remains, so he seems to like the old Elven world; there would be no profit in lying about that
- he intervened with Cole, trying to keep him more as Spirit, and critizised me a lot for helping Cole to become more human PLUS
- he told how he thought the Spirit World and the Mundane World should be connected, a VERY risky thing to say given how most people view the spirits and the spirit world. Again nothing truly to gain form saying that at this time, so we may conclude he is somehow honest here, in his support of Spirits. He does seem to see the seperation of material world and "Fade" as wrong.
Third, all tricksters are arrogant, believing in the supriority of their intellect, so they never can fully conceal their true nature and desire. He said, he failed. We can not be sure about what, but the connection of spirit and material world sounds like the most likely thing, he wanted to achieve. Morrigan muses, she too wants to see a return of the "magical ways of old", and detests humanity for seeing the Fade and the Spirits so evil. Solas repeatedly explains how the Spirits are mostly irritated and sort of "driven mad", when they enter the Material World, because it is not changable as they know it. So they follow their nature and try to change it otherwise, usually violent, but he claims, they are not inherintely evil.
ONE possible conclusion of the true origin of the Blight may thus be, that it is a result of the unnatural seperation of the Spiritual and the Mundane world. Without that strong seperation, there would be no "demons" and no Blight?
The big question is then: How did the seperation happen? I think that is the 1 million dollar question.
First just let me say that was a great post. ![]()
Your first section I agree with completely. One of the reasons I *really* hope we get some DLC that is accessible during the post-game is because I want an anwser to that question: why the HELL did he pick a corrupted Tevinter Magister in the first place a the one to unlock the orb?
In your second section I have one thing to add, and that is AFTER the well of sorrows, if you drink form the Well, he asks you what you intend to do with the knowledge and power. If you say restore what was lost, he isn't all that pleased. So, while he may regret the way the world has ended up because of whatever he did in the ancient past, I don't think he holds the time of Arlathan in any great reverence.
Your third section: I came away with a different interpretation. When you first speak to him in Haven, he mentions how the world could be if the Veil did not exist, and then spends the rest of the game helping you find and activate those elven wards that reinforce the Veil and prevent Rifts. That's the miscellaneous task you can take on to bump his approval, like destroying red lyrium for Varric. I think, and I could be off, that the Veil was created through his actions. Maybe not by him personally, but the way he speaks of the world, a world with no Veil, and with me now knowing who he is, that dialogue sounds like someone recalling something that once was. Something he destroyed out of necessity, rather than desire. I could be waaay off, of course.

/facepalm
How in the world did I not make that connection. I looked right at those statues and thought to myself that Mythal clearly likes dragons.
Just because Flemeth is Mythal does not mean she cannot also be Andraste...
Don't you guys get the references? She was BETRAYED. Andraste was betrayed. Mythal came to a young woman who was begging the gods for power for justice. This completely sounds like Andraste to me.
Maybe "elven gods" are to the ancient elves as dwarven Paragons are to dwarves. Just revered individuals that embody something meaningful to the ancient elves.
Could be true, but I doubt it since Flemeth was able to turn into a dragon AND body-hop thanks to, what I think was, Mythal's power (aaaand mythal is a 'confirmed' ancient elven god) but Abelas (an ancient elf) could not.
Unless ofcourse, these revered individuals had super powers/special powers/maybe even were the first mages, in that case I can get behind that concept ![]()

Any magister that manages to enter the fade physically without the help of... ancient elven stuff I assume, has to have immense power. Let's also not forget Alexius managed to create time magic. Perhaps Corypheus needed to play around with the foci long enough for it to store Corypheus' energy, after which Solas would take it back and use that stored energy to do whatever he wanted to do in the first place.
Or perhaps he secretly hoped that the old gods/blight corruption would 'force' Corypheus to do whatever Solas wanted/needed him to do, because maybe the archdemons are Solas' lost 'friends'? And maybe he had hopes that even in their blighted state they would use darkspaw to help him? Just rough guesses here.

It's annoying when the god word is flung around constantly. "Oh it turns out he's a god", but that doesn't answer anything! It just begs more questions of what a "god" even is. It's such an empty term.

I believe the word God in the Dragon age universe just means one with great power
After failing to take the orb intact he had to find another way to return his powers/strength due to being in a weakened state or just as likely knew without it she would come after him and hence meeting with flemmeth, he knew she would want his soul too now that the orb is out of the picture and was wise enough to pretend to play into her hands while protecting himself using her goals/nature and personality against her. Thinking since one way or another would have to confront her at some stage due to her desire for ever more power and his being the kind of power she most wants, if did not go to her she would seek him out so he turned the tide in his favor by protecting himself should she try to take his power and maybe protecting his now friends (lover too potentially) from her targeting them to get to him.
I don't know whether his apology was for when they were the gods of the past and events back then such as betraying her love or partnership by falling in love with andraste and subsequent betrayal of all the elven gods who resided in the golden city by bringing a mortal corrupting it which forced them to leave and enter the bodies of dragons in our world due to being only spirits now, laying in slumber waiting until have the power to resurrect themselves in their old forms so when darkspawn find these sleeping gods they offer sacrifices to the gods in order to bring them back to their original power/form hence the blights, the rampage of death and sacrifices to their gods to restore that power. The dread wolfs betrayal of both mythral personally and the rest of the old gods they once (maybe) ruled over/lived with in the golden city by inviting andraste to rule/live alongside him there (that being the 'mistake' he refers to often) despite mythral maybe being whom he once maybe ruled the golden city with and it's subsequent corruption is the reason why everything is as it is now.
...or whether he apologized because he failed to find another way to regain his powers which might have put her off thinking she could take his in his weakened state, at same time knew what she might do given lack of choice in stealing the orb from him had he recovered it or knowing without it he was still in his weakened state so might try to take his power from him, plus he knew what would happen to her when she tried to take his soul due to his protection spell and regrets that it might come to that hurting one of his own kind, someone he has wronged in the past and one he may of once loved but betrayed when fell in love with andraste or the consequences of that love to their home the golden city.
The old gods were merely immortal elves whom through their immortality spanning centuries or thousands of years had grown more and more powerful through the use of sacrifices similar to blood magic in a way to continue to increase their powers (imho). Shrines were erected to serve them and provide more sacrifices to increase the gods powers. These ancient elven (now godlike beings) war'd among themselves in an effort to continue to become even more powerful which led to the downfall of the ancient elves. Tivinter came along and merely picked up the pieces of this falling empire and learned of how they gained so much power using sacrifices so incorporated such magic technologies and studies into their own culture like blood magic, including the social aspect of slavery which ancient elves used and slaves used potentially for sacrifices in an effort to become like gods themselves.
The ancient elves who became godlike beings created the golden city within the fade and some retreated to it to avoid the war among their own kind, the rest of the old elven gods that never retreated to the city killed themselves off in the war that raged. Tivinter through the ransacking of what remained after the war in the ancient elven lands found out about this city and over time grew powerful enough by following some of the same practices as the elves became powerful enough to enter this elven golden city but never realized the old gods had retreated there in spirit form to prevent corruption and found out was already corrupted and blackened by dread wolfs previous betrayal of his people because of the consequences of his love for andraste and what he did.
Andraste in my opinion was a mortal whom one of the elven gods dread wolf which resided in the city fell in love with. He helped her come to the city in order to be with him (to rule it I believe might be a mistake by the chantry but maybe is true and dread wolf ruled it with mythral) which led to she maybe being the reason it was corrupted when she went there in mortal form to be with her elven god lover dread wolf and that is the betrayal of the other gods which is referenced in game since it destroyed their home, their city and forced the old gods to abandon it. There is no individual maker, the chantry got it wrong and misinterpreted it. The maker(s) were the old elven gods and they made the golden city. One of those makers which fell in love with andraste was dread wolf and his betrayal of the other elven gods was maybe his inviting her into the golden city in arrogance which led to it's corruption and forcing all the old gods whom resided there to leave and enter the bodies of dragons while mythral instead entered that of flemmeth.
My guess is the dread wolf and mythral were together once in the golden city (maybe they were the ones who ruled the golden city) which is where they retreated to in order to escape the war among their kind alongside other elven gods who also retreated to it with them, the elven gods had to cast off their bodies in the real world in order to live there forever without corrupting it. Maybe those elven gods did not chose to enter their city in mortal form because they did not want to destroy our world or corrupt theirs by going there in mortal form unlike the magisters or maybe andraste did when they went there in mortal form (most likely andraste corrupted it when went there to be with dread wolf which could also be the betrayal of mythral as doing so destroyed and corrupted the city dread wolf and she plus other elven gods had been using to hide from the war among their kind). Which could explain why it was corrupt when the magisters came to the city.
My theory being that is was the dread wolf whom fell in love with andraste and mythal felt betrayed and scorned by dread wolfs infidelity or the consequences of his actions which corrupted the city they had made their home including the betrayal of the other gods in that city. The other gods left the city and their souls/spirits entered that of the dragons. Mythral also left the city and came to our world taking over the body of flemmeth now that hers was gone long ago because of the need to become a spirit in order to retreat to the golden city along with other elven gods and live there. The dread wolf also left the now corrupt city, he returned to this world but was maybe unwilling to take over another persons body so took a lot longer to regain a physical form hence why awakened from slumber so much later than flemmeth whom became a vessel to mythral. Which is why when the magisters had arrived it was empty.
The orbs themselves I think are merely a container which holds a portion of their powers from back when they were still gods prior to going into slumber to survive the war among their own kind but they need a certain amount of power or sacrifices to enable their use of which after awakening the dread wolf never had enough power to use it or unwilling to make such sacrifices so needed someone powerful enough to use it on him but was taken instead and used for other means. Flemmeth had used hers since awakened long ago and had made immense living sacrifices aka the burning of villages and sacrifices of children etc to enable her one but was not enough to return her to full godhood so continues to seek out more power.
She in the end without the alternative way of gaining even more power towards reclaiming her godhood by taking his orb or thinking he had no orb so didn't believe could protect himself, she tried to absorb his power in her goal of obtaining the souls of old gods in order to fully resurrect herself as a god like she used to be. He is no fool though and had protected himself prior to the meeting via a protection spell/enchantment which is the reason for the glowing green shield around head after flemmeth apologized for what I presume she was about to do to her old friend which once lived within the golden city (perhaps ruled over with) when attempted to steal his power so she can further her goal of regaining her god form/status/powers.
The protection spell prevented her from taking his soul and backfired on her hence the blue sparks/glow on herself which in shock of both underestimating his foresight and maybe not thinking he had enough power to protect himself and upon realizing what he had done she tried to back away while it also turned her to stone. She did not die I think though, probably just incapacitated but I guess it is possible she died but I doubt it, that the protection spell might have did more than just stop her taking his but also would do the opposite and it would end up taking hers and it is also possible it merely took the old god baby's soul from her and not her own but still turned her to stone.
That's how I saw events go down and how I interpreted it. My theory behind it all (which I admit could be wrong on some of it like maybe she did take over his body at the end)...but with andraste, the old gods and golden city plus why the city became black/corrupted and why no-one was present/already corrupted when magisters from tivinter finally got there, why mythral felt betrayed along with how dread wolf became known as the betrayer of his people and why the orbs were important plus why flemmeth became host to mythral as well as why old gods inhabit the bodies of dragons plus reason behind blights I think I might be correct to some degree with exception maybe of the relationship dread wolf and mythral had while living in the golden city.
How do the Avvar gods and goddess fit into everyone's theory?
Guest_Dandelion_Wine_*
It looks to me as if the Dread Wolf *took* Flemeth's power/life, that is reason for the apology before hand.
That's the thing, though, she apologized second. That either means they both knew what had to be done or she surprised him with forcing her soul onto him, which should, according to her, not be possible... her "gasp" is easily explained either way, since her body basically dies in that instant, which can't be pleasant, even if she does it willingly.
of course one must ask what is a god or goddess?.
Well, crap - I have no idea what happened. It looked to me like Solas was the absorb-er rather than the absorb-ee though. It was however completely damn awesome and I can't wait to see what will come of it in the future. Dread wolf indeed, sneaky devil! ![]()
Hurry up and write the next chapter, Bioware. ![]()
Just because Flemeth is Mythal does not mean she cannot also be Andraste...
Don't you guys get the references? She was BETRAYED. Andraste was betrayed. Mythal came to a young woman who was begging the gods for power for justice. This completely sounds like Andraste to me.
Could be. Whether it's actually the case or not is, I think, irrelevant. The important part is that this last game finally presented the idea that 'Hey, maybe all these gods around here have more in common than we thought'.
And that's pretty cool if you ask me. Makes you wonder what makes anyone a god to the eyes of others in this universe.
There is one thing that absolutely makes no sense to me: why, why did Solas give the orb to Coryphelllus?! To tear down the Veil? Then why does he approve when you strengthen it through the elven artifacts... Again makes no sense. And we'll have to wait years for an answer ![]()
Meh, there's just too many pieces missing to even try to make a coherent line of thought about this.... but, we can try to at least get some stuff out of the way and just keep the ones that are still uncertain:
As for elven gods being the old gods i think thats not possible, since there's 7 old gods and the elven gods are 9 (just on the good side, there's the forgotten ones as well)
I also dont think the gods are truly gods, they are extremely talented/powerful beings that rose to a god-hood status. Even thought the elves call the pantheon gods, they also talk about the Creators, that existed before the pantheon gods were created (maybe the Maker view of the elves).
Even thought at first view it seems that Solas kills Flemeth and absorbs her, it doesnt make much sense to me (it could be either way tho).
First, Mythal was the equivalent of the elven gods leader - together with Elgar'nan. She should be way more powerful then Fen'harel, the only way for him to defeat her without her consent, would be to trick her, and not in a murder-knife way as it seems in the scene. Also, whatever she was while she was "crawling" to get to Flemeth, she has been using Flemeth as vessel so she has been around for 600 years. Fen'Harel apparently awoke from his slumber recently so much so that he wasnt at full power, otherwise he would use the orb himself, instead of giving it to someone else. All indicates that Fen'harel shouldnt be able to kill Flemeth not yet at least. Flemeth tells Morrigan that she is far more powerful in the fade than in the physical world, in this scene they are obviously in the crossroads (look at the trees behind them? They seem to be unique to the crossroads) which is a realm made by the elves, specifically here, i dont think the second most powerful deity of the elves pantheon could have been beaten so easily.
Second, Why would Fen'harel want to kill her? To steal her soul for more power? It seems obvious that Flemeth is sending Urthemiel's soul thru the Eluvian, if Solas wanted more power, wouldnt he be rushing at the beggining of the scene to make sure he would get both souls? (can someone confirm please if they have a playthrough with no OGB if this scene starts the same - with Flemeth pushing a soul out of the eluvian)
Third, the old cliche overly used - old friend - as a last goodbye. Flemeth says "I am sorry too, old friend". That old friend just screams a goodbye. So whatever happened in the scene, Flemeth was willing, and gave much more indication that one of them was about to die then Solas did with the "I should pay the price" - that could mean a lot of things that we are not aware of yet.
Fourth, Flemeth was looking for a vessel. That much was certain. We dont know how many daughters she has, but in case she was hoping Yavanna to be her plan B in case Morrigan was a fail, well Alistair killed Yavanna. So when Morrigan drinks from the Well, Flemeth immediatly tracks her and her son, most likely desperate since she is so much older now and needs a new vessel, you can see that she looks old and tired in Inquisition in contrast to what she looked in DA2.
So she tracks them and gives Morrigan 2 choices, either Morrigan allows Kieran to go with Flemeth to be her vessel, or Morrigan keeps Kieran but she will in turn become the vessel of Flemeth. Flemeth gets surprised at how quick Morrigan decides that she rather keep Kieran and allow Flemeth to do to her whatever she will and asks why. Morrigan replies: "I may be many things, but I will not be the mother you were to me". After saying this Flemeth look is one of pain and regret, you can see she is conflicted, and in the end she just takes Urthemiel out of Kieran, and allows them to go away in peace and even promises Morrigan that she was never in danger of being possessed. (I dont buy the unwilling bit because Kieran was willing and still she lets him go with Morrigan, I think this was the one time Flemeth decided to really be a mother to Morrigan, but has to say something smart so Morrigan wont see her sentimentality). Which all means, she still needs a vessel, and maybe Solas was her last chance before her body failed, and she took it. "I'm sorry too, old friend".
But then again... we NEED MORE INFO BIOWARE! DLC FOR JANUARY PLS.
Just because Flemeth is Mythal does not mean she cannot also be Andraste...

Been cracking my head with this one too, but that would mean that Flemeth's lover was the Maker himself.... hmm...
One idea I haven't see come up much: Did Solas expect Corypheus to unlock the orb and die doing so (i.e. he questions how Corypheus survived the explosion), and get caught off-guard by Cory's ability to transfer to a new tainted host? We don't have a whole lot of background on that decision or the circumstances... but if Solas was not somehow tricked by Cory than this seems a plausible reason to hand the orb over, expecting it to be recoverable.
