So, after 120 hours I finally finished the Fort Adamant/Fade  quest and ended up choosing to leave Hawke behind. My thinking was that we will still need the Grey Wardens because only they can stop a blight and Stroud can help rebuild the order. Hawke may be the Champion, but he can't kill an Archdemon, only a Grey Warden can (or a certain apostate witch from the Kocari Wilds, depending on your mood).

Varric was royally pissed. Can't blame him: all my Hawkes (all two of them) were fast friends with Varric and took him everywhere. (Bianca, baby!) Now his card is red. Not sure if that means he doesn't like me or not. I have been generally getting lots of approval from him up until this point.

Anyway, I was curious who most people choose to save and who to leave behind. This choice is more interesting than the usual choice between two different NPCs (say, Kaidan vs Ashley) because one of the "NPCs" was actually the "PC" in the prior title. Does that make them easier to let die, or harder? For me it was easier. I never developed an attachment to Hawke because in some ways, Hawke was me. She was a puppet on a string that I controlled, not some entity with a "life" of its own. (Plus, my explorations in playing a ruthless Shepard have really driven home the separation between my avatar and myself, allowing me more freedom to RP a character rather than try to imagine I am my avatar.)

Who the hell is Stroud? It was Loghain who got left in the fade!

That said, Hawke made it out alive (Varric was in the party with me) and Loghain got to die a proper hero.

Always sacrifice Stroud... He is not a major character and he is willing.

Choosing Stroud over Hawke is like choosing to save ensign Ricky over Cpt. Kirk.

Stroud is the most badass Warden there ever was.

Hawke. Who cares about some random Warden.  I exiled their asses, too. No regrets. TBH, I like Hawke and would even leave poor, sweet (DOOMED) Alistair behind if that was my worldstate.

Do his personal quest. Although... I think it's still red then, too? Just different.

I literally see no reason to save Stroud over Hawke. I could understand if it was Alistair or Loghain but Stroud? The guy you could potentially only meet once for a few minutes in DA2? If Stroud is the warden, the only reason I could see to save Stroud is if you are a Hawke hater.

Well, I really hope you spared the Architect in that case because the ending if you exile the Wardens has some unfortunate implications for the next blight.

I really liked Stroud, but I had to go with saving Hawke because, unlike you, I did get attached to her. Besides, there are still other Grey Wardens around, and I was confident that the Order could recover in time even without the benefit of Stroud's leadership. My mage gave them a rousing lore-related speech to remind the remaining Wardens about what they had accomplished in the past, etc. when they seemed a bit rudderless at the end of that.

There was also the Anders factor - my Hawke was still with him and was trying to protect him, so...yeah, fine, I still have an emotional attachment to Mr. I Blew Up the Chantry, too (you can deplore the crime/act of terrorism/whatever and still love the person

Spoiler
. Anyhow, I felt like I couldn't just leave him alone without Hawke to keep him grounded and safe (inasmuch as she can).

I just can't even bring myself to kill Loghain in DAO anymore, after having done the Return to Ostagar DLC with him and Wynne in the party. He's a really interesting character, and I really like how Solas describes the Battle of Ostagar that he watches in the fade. Sure Loghain might have gone power mad, but its well within reason that he saw a losing battle and refused to suffer more losses. So I think its a perfect end for him to sacrifice himself to save the Inquisitor and help correct the new Warden Commander's mistakes.

It's hard, but I have to choose Alistair. I roleplay as Hawke, so it feels weird to let myself die in the game. Logically, Hawke is a pathetic character who accomplish nothing. Alistair as a senior warden could rally the wardens. Then again, That bastard rejected my warden, so bye bye Alistair.

Stroud dies, no question. I'm somewhat jealous of the people who had an actual decision to make, but glad I didn't have to lose anyone I cared about.

If you think of it from an in-character perspective there are many reasons to save Stroud over Hawke if you're pro-Wardens. He is one of the only ones who can successfully rebuild the Orlesian Wardens because he is the last Senior Warden left.

Actually if your warden is Warden Commander of Fereldan she/he is just away doing research and is more than capable of rebuilding the Wardens after all she/he rebuilt the Fereldan Wardens after the Fifth Blight, and then rebuilt them again after the Architect (one can probably assume she/he recruited more Wardens than we ever see in Awakening since she would have to staff both Amaranthine, and Soldiers Keep with Wardens as well as the Ostagar outpost if she/he decided to rebuild that outpost to.

That being said I did not choose Hawke.. I chose Stroud since my warden survived DAO and Awakening and is more than capable of being First Warden since she is a Cousland raised to run a Teyrnir, and defeated a Blight with two Grey Wardens.. then rebuilt the Fereldan Wardens twice.

Stroud bites it for me because the Wardens suck and I do not want to see them rebuild. Let them (fittingly) go the way of the griffon and their secrets be dispersed among the world-leaders of Thedas.

I just did that quest. I let Stroud die. Morrigan told me that the Hero of Ferelden was an excellent father and was working on finding a way to cure himself of the taint, and gave me an operation on the war table to contact him.

The Wardens will be fine. I mean, two raw recruits rallied armies, united a kingdom in a civil war, defeated an archdemon and then one of them went to rule a country while another went to rebuild the order twice.

I'm sure the other Wardens can make do.

To be fair, what the Wardens did was no better than what the mages and templars do either. Only thing is, and this isn't even much, but the Wardens had more noble goals than the mages and templars both.

I can get why you made that decision, but watch, the next blight will be in Orlais.

Good luck trying to stop the Blight in southern Thedas without the Wardens then. You can follow Vivienne suggestion and flinging the rocks to darkspawn anyway, and I'm sure the next Blight will consume southern Thedas before we know it.

I picked Hawke because he volunteered and I figured someone would need to lead the Wardens afterwards. Made sense but then Loghain left and I was like WTF? I'm stuck with these guys now! and conscripted them.

I was a bit miffed when i beat the game with both guys and compared the ending with my buddy, found out

spoiler

If you keep the Orlesian Wardens they become more inclusive and open, they have some conflicts with Weisshaupt Wardens and ultimately sever all ties. If you don't they go to Weisshaupt.

The Wardens and whomever else [fade survivor, regardless of who] goes to Weisshaupt vanishes when they get there, and Weisshaupt itself goes dark along with all the Wardens of the Anderfels.

So I guess we're off to Tevinter next time seeing as how Weisshaupt is right off the imperial road.

I'll have no trouble stopping the next Blight as I will be in control of an improbably lucky main character. If the Wardens want important leaders (Loghain/the Inquisitor) to stop deciding they aren't worth the trouble, I'd suggest they be a bit more transparent. As it is, their lack of accountability and secrecy have helped contribute to at least two potential apocalypses in just one decade.

But this hasn't yet mattered, because I was in control of an improbably lucky main character.

(honestly I mostly exiled them because I was still mad about Duncan forcibly conscripting the Warden in Origins. very exploitative and, more importantly, rude.)

Why, by the Dread Wolf, would you leave Hawke in the Fade?

Unless The Hero of Ferelden is dead in your playthrough, that is...
