I chose Loghain over Hawke first time because, well, Loghain's my favorite DA character. But the more I think about it, the more it feels right that Hawke should die there. If he can't be the one to stop Corypheus, dying in the attempt is the next best thing.

Some of these posts conflict...Is Varric confirmed to leave no matter what if you sacrifice Hawke?

I really liked Stroud, but I had to go with saving Hawke because, unlike you, I did get attached to her. Besides, there are still other Grey Wardens around, and I was confident that the Order could recover in time even without the benefit of Stroud's leadership. My mage gave them a rousing lore-related speech to remind the remaining Wardens about what they had accomplished in the past, etc. when they seemed a bit rudderless at the end of that.

There was also the Anders factor - my Hawke was still with him and was trying to protect him, so...yeah, fine, I still have an emotional attachment to Mr. I Blew Up the Chantry, too (you can deplore the crime/act of terrorism/whatever and still love the person

Spoiler
. Anyhow, I felt like I couldn't just leave him alone without Hawke to keep him grounded and safe (inasmuch as she can).

Out of like but same for me. Andersmancer and a big Hawke fan.

But Stroud was soo hunky in DAI. I almost told Hawke "Sorry Sister! "and got Stroud to twirl his moustache at Quizzy's bedside ;)

I had Loghain and Hawke, and it was much more difficult than I thought it would be. I probably looked at my screen for a good five minutes trying to decide. I ended up saving Loghain though, because Grey Wardens. Basically the same reason I spared Loghain at the Landsmeet. At that point in the game you still don't really know if Corypheus is going to start a Blight or if one has already started, and you need someone to rebuild the Wardens. Hawke can't do that. IMO, Hawke is the most expendable. It certainly helped that my Hawke hadn't romanced anyone and that the only person I was really concerned about was Varric.

Even though the voice actor sounded a lot different and I wasn't able to come up with even a reasonable facsimile in the character creator, there was no way I was going to order Hawke to his death.  It's a shame it came to that because I actually thought Stroud was a great character...

Varric didn't leave when Revas Lavellan allowed Hawke to stay behind; he told a story about Hawke (regarding his diplomatic nature). I don't think the rumor about Varric leaving is any more true than the one about the shard possessing Varric.

I cheated here I confess. I initially picked Hawke very quickly cause I thought the Wardens might still have use. But the anger on the part of Varric and Cassandra had me replay the whole moment and pick Stroud. It was one of those things that came up so quickly I just wasn't prepared for it and after thinking about it letting Stroud handle the beast made more sense as the Wardens needed to atone at that moment just as sending them away now seems a good idea given their potential risk. But I did cheat there. I just wasn't prepared to disappoint those two characters!

Chose Stroud over Hawke.  Never liked Hawke and there is no in-game reason you would want to choose him over Stroud.  The character serves no purpose except to introduce us to Stroud.  This all aside from the fact that, protagonist to a game or no, Hawke was flat out a bad character.

Stroud is the most badass Warden there ever was.

You haven't met my Warden then.

I haven't tried a world state that gave me stroud yet, but I left Loghain the first time (in part because I figured it was a warden mess, and because it seems to me that there are plenty of non-Orlais-based wardens to help rebuild the order). The second time I left Alistair, but was unimpressed with how minor Fiona, Morrigan and Leliana's reactions were, so I reloaded and left Hawke that time - I liked his final comment to Isabela and Varric's mourning story on that one.

If I do another run and use a world state where I do see Stroud, he's going to be the one to stay behind.

No, he does not leave for sure.  If you're on good enough terms with Varric by that point in the game, he tells you a story about Hawke and you can give him a hug to get some approval back.

In my game, the Orlesian wardens rebuild anyway without Stroud. So there's that.

See, that's what bothers me - it's either

- leave Hawke behind and the Warden goes to Weisshaupt never to be seen again while the remaining wardens rebuild;

- leave the Warden behind and Hawke goes to Weisshaupt never to be seen again while the remaining wardens rebuild.

It makes you choose between two characters you like, which should be a big deal, but after you've made the choice it just feels so inconsequential. It's like they're tugging at your heartstrings for the sake of drama alone.

Don't leave Stroud in the Fade, the mustache is so awesome that he will survives the fight with the giant spider thing. Then at the end of DAI, Cory managed to survived long enough that his soul get into the Fade, and he will just possessed Stroud. You just give Cory what he wants!!!!

In all seriousness though, if it's Loghain/Alistair or Hawke, it's much harder, but Stroud or Hawke...not so much, some people didn't even meet him in DA 2.

I left Hawke, without hesitation.  It was the right thing for both characters.  My Quizzie didn't really know Hawke, but was of the opinion (right or wrong) that the Wardens would be pretty much finished without Stroud, and she didn't want to see that happen.  My Hawke would not have hesitated to sacrifice herself;  it was a great relief, after all that she'd been through, to go out in an moment of uncomplicated heroism.

If Varric had been in the party at the time, it would have been much more difficult -- but only for me, the player.  Before that point, my Quiz wasn't all that close to Varric.  As it was, I felt really bad for him afterwards, and even moreso once I saw his red card.

Stroud is the only senior warden left that didn't go along with the mad demon summoning plan. He is the only one that could restore the grey wardens reputation like Hawke said. Without him, you may as well have exiled the wardens which I didn't want to do. So I ended up saving Stroud.

I knew Bioware wouldn't let me take the sensible decision of capturing and judging Hawke for effectively starting the mage rebellion so I just left him there to die, not to mention the fact that he was simply useless compared to a high rank grey warden given what was going on.

I'd have loved to chop his head off tho.

Given the fact that Stroud is never an option to leave behind because my world state, I would leave him in the Fade over Hawke though. I usually end up picking between Hawke and Loghain. I would leave Hawke in the Fade but it is so hard because of my bud, Varric. His "where's Hawke?" And my inquisitor giving him a hug, and he mentions having to tell Isabela the news.. That is too much to take in. The reason to keep Loghain alive is because he is my warden's father-in-law.. If the HoF ever returns to Anora and the throne, I'd like for him to be there. If they never reunite or nothing occurs between the three in the future, I see no reason to keep Anora or Loghain alive and will likely alter my game state and always save Hawke.

This. Which made Varric's sadness and the Hawke theme playing in the background after leaving *Stroud* in the Fade rather weird - enough to make me wonder if, somehow, the game expected you to leave Hawke in the Fade instead.

Anyway, I was curious who most people choose to save and who to leave behind. This choice is more interesting than the usual choice between two different NPCs (say, Kaidan vs Ashley) because one of the "NPCs" was actually the "PC" in the prior title. Does that make them easier to let die, or harder?

My answer here is maybe not as applicable as some because I saw no appeal in DA2 and thus never played it. But generally speaking, I would say "easier", unless I loathe the NPC involved in the same situation. I don't feel comfortable with my characters hiding behind someone else's death, especially if that "someone else" is their friend. In fact I really enjoy the occasional "heroic sacrifice" ending. That's why my worldstate features a dead Warden -- she would never have let her "brother" Alistair die.

Going by what I know about Hawke (i.e. the Hawke I set up in the Keep after consulting a wiki for what the options mean), I figured that she'd sacrifice herself because she feels partly responsible for a lot of the crap that's been plaguing the world. Also, she's apparently lost most of what she worked for during the last decade, is a very worn-out and weary person overall as a result, and doesn't feel like she has that much left to live for anyway. Stroud, as a senior Warden, has a chance of maybe helping to turn the order around. So "my" Hawke would jump the demon before Stroud had a chance to do the same.

Plus, the "hug Varric" scene is quite moving. Wouldn't want to miss it, even though I'm not a big fan of the guy.
