Conscript or Free? The one difference: Group A approves, Group B disapproves. Or group A disapproves and Group B approves. That's it. I made tougher decisions deciding on my breakfast this morning and it will probably have longer lasting effects which I will disocver later in the day.

Edit: In fact tomorrow I think I will try freeing my eggs instead of boiling them in their shell.

I allied with the mages. It's better to have willing allies than people who don't have a choice...and it makes Leliana happy ;)

I allied with the Mages in my main, since she to was a mage freedom fighter, although she hid her views well to the point only a few close advisors knew about her own views on the conflict.

Agreed, all the mages I met in Redcliffe except for one didn't like the alliance and that made it a harder for me. Fiona is not leader material imo and I don't like that she stays in charge. We should have the option to judge her in Skyhold no matter what we choose for the mages.

It would have been cool if we could hold these incompetent leaders accountable. At the very least, be allowed to demote them.
Inquisitor: "Fiona, due to your reckless endangerment of the Citizen's of Redcliffe, your nearly treasonous actions allying with a Foreign nation, and your betrayal of the ideals that inspired the mage rebellion, I herebye strip you of the title "Grand Enchanter. You are unworthy of such responsibility, and the respect such a title holds."

Considering how forgiving our Inquisitors can be, it would be nice to have some options that allow us to admonish people and not hold them completely unaccountable.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Conscripting the mages after they had a taste if freedom could start another war. Allowing them to go completely free could start another war. As hard as it will be, the only sure fire way to prevent an all out war is to find some middle ground between the two options. Sure it will still lead to some fighting but it will be on a smaller scale and endanger a lot less people on all sides.

Most of them don't actually want full freedom - they only supported the rebellion in order to escape the rising tyranny of the seekers/templars. I imagine most of them would be more relieved than angry to be conscripted by a faction of moderates like the Inquisition when the alternatives were death/tranquility/oppression at the hands of the templars and slavery at the hands of the Venatori. The Libertarians are a minority within the mage rebellion, even if the Grand Enchanter happens to be from their fraternity.

Conscription. DA:I was a giant neon sign flashing the message that Mages cannot be trusted to govern or control themselves.

Conscription, because out of every DA game I've played, I've only met three who weren't complete ****-ups.
