It seems like some crafted armor has these extra slots and some don't, but there is no way to tell until you actually craft the item. Am I missing something?

How do you know what crafted armors have the upgrade legs/arms slots?

Doesn't show anywhere, which is kinda stupid. Put my best materials into the Templar armor and realized it doesn't have upgrade slots

The unique models do not have slots, since the slots change appearance. They have more materials to compensate. That means Orlesian Army, Grey Warden, of the Dragon, and unique peices - no slots. All armours that look like that open button coat while on the Inquisitor (or mimic personal styles on party memebers) are basic models and CAN be modified.
