Lack of Good Female Romance Options...

So let me just start out by saying I love Dragon Age, so this is not a rant. Also my first post on here in years!

I am however a little disappointed by the heterosexual female romance options...in that'll there's only two. There seems to be more options for the same sex or 'swings both ways' camps.

#Spoiler# (Which I only know from reading, not from experience in game yet)

The only options for a male heterosexual character which, let's face it (don't try to start and take the moral high ground here) is going to be the MAJORITY of DA gamers (it just is statistically) are, Cassandra or Josephine.

Now this thread might start to sound harsh, but I think it's fair.

Cassandra is a tough tom-boy esque, scarred faced zealot. Not most guys first choice in women. And Josephine; who's simply not involved in the game enough to be interesting (I.e. Not a proper party member to form a close relationship with).

When we compare them with the obvious 'sex appeal' of say Morrigan and Isabella, or the cutesy Leliana and Merrill, the options are slim pickings to say the least. Again, harsh but fair for the majority.

Such a ridiculous thing to fret about in a game, but in truth the companion and romance options in Mass Effect and Dragon Age games have been one of the most interesting 'side quests' to explore.

Add a third (straight or bi, non elf-loving) lady Bioware! :)

i like Cassandra she is a great character

lol, sounds like we got pretty much equal treatment, so really we don't have that much room to complain.

as for your assumtions as to why men pick the characters they do, I hate to tell you that at least to me you are WAY off. I didn't pick Cass first because by the time I saw the soft dere dere part of her, I was already smitten with Jose. However my second playthough is going to for Cass. The scars on her face doesn't really detract anything for me. The only thing I will note about it is that, they never seem to heal... like at all... You would think that towards the end of the game they would start to lighten up abit...

For DA2, first playthough I was going for Avilene however seeing as that wasn't going to happen, I switched over to Isabella, I never found myself romanticly intrested in Merill gave me too much of a little sister vibe to want to do that. So for me at least there was really only hetro romance intrest, and that was Isabela.

Now for DA:O I went with Morri first, then got ninjamanced by Leilana, I rejected her first advanced then she outright said she loved me, so at the time I was like, Eh, what the hell see what happens. And found a love triangle.

As for the whole "sex appel" thing... I will let you in on a little secret, we wanna have sex with all the women int he world... they are all sexy in one way or another so just being a woman already causes you to have 'sex appel' at least to hetro men at least.

The problem is for me is Josephine feels like a bonus content/addition. yeah you can romance her same with Cullen , but you don't get the same connection with her as with someone in your Party , the Banter between characters helps you build a view of the characters and i just don't get it with Josephne, the banter between Dorian/Cass/Varric is always good (Not Morrigan/Allistar levels , but its enjoyable.

Still i think Vivienne was a missed opportunity. even though it makes sense story wise for her not to be a LI . She would have fit Bioware's 'Progressive stance' very well.

Would have also liked more different race options like Qunari/dwarf female NPC's 'cough a certain scout cough cough' Heck even a certain individual in Bull's chargers would have been a good thing for diversity.

Here is to hoping they come with DLC . And that they are Party members not random NPC's you seen only when back at base.

Morrigan/Alistair banter was awful. Everyone else involved was kind of cool, though.

It is not only women getting bonus content. EVERYONE gets this bonus content. You can romance Solas or Cullen if you like. Just make the right type of inquisitor to do so.

Seriously. A Female PC isn't restricted to just female players.  :P

Who wants those options anyway: A drug addict, a murderer, a freak, and a plot device. To put it more mildly, nobody's a shining beacon of waifu/husbandodom in this game.

Exactly!

Folks upset about the hetero male inquisitor's romances should target the straight (or bisexual, more so) female elf.

Folks really need to learn to separate real human beings from the facsimiles of these characters.

This I agree with. Straight male pc's have gotten only human females since DAO, with the small exception of Merrill.

There should, in general, be more diversity in this regard.

I know why Solas is elf only. I did beat the game believe it or not.

What I'm saying is why did Female Dalish elves get extra stuff? at least they should have made Cullen or Solas Bi. That dosen't fix anything for Straight Male's but at least Gay men get another option.

Female elves got "extra" content because when faced with a year-long extension Bioware took a look at the characters they had and said,

"Well, we have the budget for two more romances. Which of these characters could work?" Varric and Viv were off the table for reasons that are clear if you've played the game. Cole was a no-go because of his childlike nature. Leliana was a romance in a previous game, and Bioware doesn't want to go there. That left Solas and Cullen. Cullen has been written as only being attracted to women since his first appearance in DA:O, and Solas only works for elves. Perhaps they could've made him bi, but I suspect that he was already a character fully formed at that point, and the writer already had his sexual preferences worked out.

And you know what? Anyone can enjoy the romances. Nothing's keeping you from rolling a female elf and romancing Cullen or Solas in order to experience another side of their personalities. In fact, I would highly recommend it. Solas's especially is tied to the story in interesting ways.

Why not Harding? She seems like a good option.

Because Harding, with her lesser involvement, would have been much more difficult to implement into the story than Cullen or Solas.

It's a matter of resources, not favoritism.

I think Cassandra was a good character, up to the point of her romance, then it was cringe inducing, quite like diabetes flavoured cheese. Just so much cheese. Her religiosity is also rather annoying, I mean Leliana is also pretty devout but she was far more accepting and I don't remember gaining disapproval everytime I said I don't believe in the Maker. Also it didn't feel like her behaviour when romanced fits her character in general. And Josephine is just not involved enough to be compelling.

Dorian is. And you can help Cullen to kick the habit, but I agree that other than him, the straight female options are pretty unappealing. I'm actually attracted to men, and I'd still rather romance Cassandra or Josephine over Solas, Bull, or Blackwall.

Yup, ok guess what yes I am a straight male who only enjoys playing straight males in the game, or any game for that matter. Yeah yeah, cry about it but you're not me I know this and so do you, I don't care about branching out and have tried, just not for me. That being said sorry the straight male romances are crap to me. Yeah great cass and Josie can be someone else's cup of tea great, good for them for enjoying the characters. Me personally I dislike that Cass is just so devot she refused to see another way at all. It annoys me to no end and well, sorry did her romance the first playthrough and it pissed me off. Physical looks meh, careless, she can have her scars and whatever else folks are crying about, I hate the zealot in her attitude and that forces my character to change for her? There is no compromise to her and it's highly annoying. Josephine, well from step one you feel slightly distent from her anyways because she isn't with you as one of your companions fighting the good fight, to me at least that is a downer. It's great that sure you get advisors and such, but why not let them go out and fight with your character like the rest? Anyways, yeah tried her anyhow, sure she has a bit more acceptance to her character, but well she's bland as hell to me. She doesn't seem to be overly anything, and really makes no desicions on her own without help from someone else. Also, so umm why are they both human? Where's the Qunari female? Or even an elf female this time around? Why no variety for the straight male romances? Yup, by far still think Isabela and Leliana are the best two ladies to romance in my opinion. Sure it's great that the other romances are there and folks enjoy em, I careless have fun with em. Yeah yeah, folks will criticize my post and speak out that it's fine you just dunno and all of that, but I do know and guess what. It's my opinion I am allowed to have it :P

What exactly was the issue with characters being hero-sexual to prevent this sort of issue?

No seriously...

No seriously...

Because people claimed it was "unrealistic" for four bisexuals to know each other.

I recall one of the devs saying at Gaymer X that all-bisexual romances were a compromise, but bisexuality isn't.  Which I think is the real reason they moved away from it.

Which is a load of bollocks if you ask me

All the devs had to do is say "the romanced individual personality changes depending on the character chosen by the player and his/her romance choice...."

So they are not all bi but it merely serves the story

But since set sexuality is the problem as it seems why not remove it from the equation?
