Title says it all...

While I was in the "The Little Things you just discovered Thread" I posted something and I thought it would have a great discussion, since there are people who likes/Dislikes Jennifer Hale/Mark Meer Voice Acting.

I wanted to ask, why? And who is your favorite. Of course, not just the part of the Voice Acting, but Romance, Gameplay overall. And what Background combines more with a specific Gender(If there's any).

I'm NOT trying to start a thread that says that you should pick BroShep because he is male, or FemShep because you're a Female Gamer, only what I want to know is WHY you picked the Option of playing as a FemShep or a MaleShep and your opinion.

So, let me get my opinion here:

1- The Romance was great. FemShep has the possibility in Romancing Garrus... A loved Character by many fans. He also has some Great Lines of Dialogue with his romance.

The Portrayal of the Character was great, in both sides.

The Romance in MaleShep was good, but IMO, not comparable with Romancing Garrus :3

Also, the Voice Acting... People say that Jennifer Hale's Voice Acting is better than Mark Meer's. I Really didn't think so. Doing a ME3 run here, and I think that her voice acting did got a bit of worse. Mark Meer, in the other hand, improved a LOT in the Voice Acting.

Now, I don't know if it's because I did numerous playthroughs with a BroShep that I'm already used to his voice, his entonment, his emotion, but playing as a FemShep isn't actually what I expected, by seeing the overall opinon in the forums.

I've posted it in Little Things thread but repost it here:

Meer improved drastically in ME2 and ME3, Hale largely held to the same standard. Both have their good and bad moments.

IMO Jennifer Hale can pull off emotional lines better than Meer, but she puts that emotion into some lines that don't require it and doesn't put them where it might work out better. Here are two examples 1) Vasir hostage situation - FemshepMaleshep 2) Garrus goodbye, no romance - Femshep,Maleshep

I prefer Meer's voice acting, he can sometimes sound completely emotionless (most apparent in ME1) but he has less of such sound inconsistencies throughout the trilogy than Jennifer Hale. Also, my canon Shepard is male  :)

P.S. One reason for lack of emotions in ME1 can be attributed to the process of sound recording. Both Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale commented on the process having much improved by the time of ME3. Voice actors were able to better follow the dialogue by listening the lines they have to respond to, they had script presented digitally rather than on paper...

PPS. I believe this question was discussed in great detail previously on these forums  :D

femshep - the voice and for romancing Samantha

Agreed!

Mark Meer is fine, but I find him a bit flat.  I love Jennifer Hale's Shepard. Jennifer brings the Commander to life, with wit, fun, and the right level of emotion for me.

And I can only speak for myself.  Femshep is, for me, a much more rewarding way to experience the ME trilogy.

I prefer Hale for Shepard and the Liara romance. Also the Traynor romance. I felt she portrayed Shepard very consistently throughout the series. Her perceived fall off in the third installment among players comparing the two was due to Meer's drastic improvement. Honestly I think Meer's coaching wouldn't let him be more of himself during the romance scenes.

Femshep.
I'm sick, like really really sick to the back teeth of playing white American men. Broshep is just another tediously dull example of it.

If I see a game that has a white stubbly gruff voiced male American lead I immediately dislike it as it just speaks of a whole volume of lazy tropes that will come with the game.

It's such a creatively bankrupt choice. It's just SO ****** BORING. ARRRGGGHHH IT REALLY ANNOYS ME.

So yeah.

Femshep. The only shep.

I think that's what I disliked most - the "stubbly gruff voiced American lead." I played TW2 and didn't have a problem playing Geralt. There are ways of having an American male be in charge and not be the stubbly voiced character trope.

Cassandra disapproves.

Shut up, Cassandra! You disapprove everything. Bah! I already miss femHawke.

Generally, I prefer femshep, but lately I have grown accustomed to Mark Meer and I don't find it as bad as I used to.

What initially turned me off of Meer (I started in ME3, not ME1 or 2) was the scene on Mars where you are chasing Dr. Eva. Shepard calls out on the radio "James, Normandy, Anybody?" Hale voices this line like it actually matters that the robot is about to get away. Meer voices it like he's asking if anybody is home. Since then, however, I have found Meer to be less objectionable because I have grown accustomed to him.

I think broShep got a better field of candidates for romance since I generally prefer romancing female NPCs (straight guy that I am). I could never bring myself to romance Garrus as a femShep although I have done a Kaidan romance in ME1 once and a Thane romance in another run through. (Actually, my femQuisitor is romancing Cullen right now.) For broShep I have no problems with the Ash, Tali, and Miri romances, though the lack of ME3 content for Miri is very disappointing. So in the romance department I think broShep wins, but since I am fine with Liara and Traynor, I am not too bothered by that.

Another reason for me to play femShep is I like looking at women more. Sad, I know, but there it is.

ME3 made it a tougher choice. I think Mark Meer did a fantastic job VA'ing in ME3, and much improved over the first game. If I'm playing a renegade-y shep I definitely prefer maleshep. Mark seems to have fun with it, heh. Paragon-y shep is femshep for sure. And I always love Jennifer's voice work, since back in the Planescape: Torment days, where I first head her voice in a game.

But it's not just about voice-work. I think femshep is who shep should be. She just fits the character better, in her interactions with other people in the ME 'verse, and her reactions to those people, and to the events of the games. *shrug* I dunno, maybe I just like tough broads. j/k.

Probably goes for me as well. It's why I like Ashley, Miri (though not Jack who is a jerk) and Cassandra. Liara's ME1 incarnation was just too goody-two-shoes for my taste. I preferred her in ME3. (maybe because I first met her in ME3.)

I'd think it would be tougher to go backwards on Liara's incarnations for sure. She was definitely a much different character in ME1... although she portrayed the geeky bookwormy, uncomfortable-with-other-species, naive scientist rather well. As for Jack... well, hell, I love Jack, particularly evolving her character as a paragon... even if I can't seem to keep her alive lately

Hey now. Cassandra isn't bad once you talk with her enough times in the game.

I agree about femHawke. I like her voice. Her and femquistor voiced by AWR, sound like sisters.

My Shepards have always been mostly paragons and for that I prefer the calmer voice of ManShep than of FemShep, who's sometimes getting a little too hot-tempered for my preferences- like towards Jacob (as in Jacob and Rebecca) during their unborn baby argument and towards James during the boxing scene. Also I like romancing Ashley and Miranda. Some of the scenes in the trilogy also seem to be written with a male Shepard in mind, like James' boxing scene. What man would challenge a woman to that? Either you'll end up a whimp or a brute in the eyes of people: it's a no-win scenario...

Still, that doesn't mean I always go for ManShep: I think 1 of every 4 of my Sheps are female. I enjoy romancing Kaidan and I find it something of a disgrace that James doesn't get a decent romance, I mean this is bloody Mass Effect: when James is flirting to me I'll decide for myself how I respond to that... Oh and the same goes for Joker (to a lesser extent).

And I poked my head over in the DAI forum. Whine Whine Whine. Why can't it be simple BM&C like here?

And I see I'm going to have to restart DAI anyway because I forgot to hit "Import to DAI" from The Keep. Fortunately I'm only through the tutorial.

Funny, I almost always prefer female protagonists in RPGs, but ME is one of the few where I prefer BroShep.

Meer just fits the Space Marine archetype Shepard is built around better imo.

I prefer broshep, although I don't mind femshep. Playing as a male feels right to me, probably because I am one. I find myself more immersed playing as a male. The staring at femshep doesn't work for me because I don't view her in a sexual way. When I do play as a female I try to put some part of myself in that character's head.

So it is Meer for me. I think his is a more consistent option. In ME3 I thought he did a great job, plus I really like the way he pulls of comedic lines. The flat effect can work there, especially with the Hanar merchant on Noveria, as well as the dance scene in the Citadel DLC.

Renegon FemShep is my canon.

I just finished my Sarcastic femHawke nearly complete play of DA2. I love the VA for Cassandra as much as I loved the VA fo Loghain. So I have my canon plays on Dragonsagekeep and just uploaded them to DAI, so now to start again - only past the tutorial anyway so no biggie. I think I'll make my character look like more like Traynor now though. The voice will fit better. Now the question - to play the lying cheating sh*t I usually play or not? I love playing rogues.
