I never even played a Spacer. So it can't even be a bad relationship?

I'm not quite sure how to answer that. Each game has some contact with Mom.

ME1 - You bump into one of Mom's former crewmembers who has PTSD and is now a homeless drunk. You can go into the Normandy's comm room and call her about it. It's a pretty short conversation, mostly about the guy, though IIRC, she does tell Shepard she is proud of him/her. I believe she's an XO on a dreadnought, and needs to get back to her work.

ME2 - You receive an email where she expresses some surprise at finding out you're alive from other sources. There are also news reports saying that she has refused a promotion to Rear Admiral, preferring to honor her child's legacy by commanding a ship.

ME3 - In Citadel DLC, you can talk with her on the phone. She does most of the talking, expressing her pride in what Shepard has become and is doing. This one is fairly sappy, imho. Also, in one of the later comms w/ Hackett, he tells Shepard that Mom has been located, promoted to Rear Admiral, and is handling logistics for the Crucible project.

So - Mom is very... motherly... lol... toward Shepard.

I wonder what the reaction would be from Shepard's mother if she knew Hackett gave her child's dogtags to an alien instead of her?

lol... keeping the hate strong.

I think I might just walk away from this series, like I did Dragon Age. Once I start thinking about it, I get really annoyed. As much as I like a lot of it, perhaps this isn't for me either.

I could say more, a lot more, but it won't do any good.

the broker dlc I don't like at all. They put stuff in there without giving Shepard an opportunity to ask questions. But I look at it like asking the question to the catalyst about the Crucible. You don't need to know and there's not enough time to explain

I don't know that Hackett ever had possession of the tags. Liara recovered them.

I've not yet purchased DAI, for a variety of reasons - but might at some point.

But, yeah, sometimes it's best to move on when an entertainment franchise no longer suits your tastes and interests. I've done that many times. I'll research ME:N before I buy it - ME3 was waaay too railroaded and cinematic for my tastes.

I don't even invite her on the ship.

But even when you tackle this issue, there's always something. It's like whack-a-mole.

The fact that she even recovers your body and acts so frantically throughout the comic is strange enough. Also, it sort of annoys me that Shepard in the Genesis comic is railroaded into being enamored with her. I just went into this in another thread: he calls their bond "pleasant" or something. Personally, I hate it when people try to "read" others without getting to know you. I hate mysticism and "psychic" phenomena in general, while this story seems to champion all of it. I also don't like people who pop Ecstacy and think they can bond and "connect" with people this way. None of these "ethereal" ways of bonding with people appeals to me.

Embracing "eternity" is not pleasant either. Embracing the present is.

And I had a chance in ME1 to sort of voice this disgust. But it's all gone now. There's no workaround to any of it.

Anyways, I'm done ranting. It's just that it bothers me on some core level, I guess.. and I can't get around it.

She says "he gave them to me so I could give them to you", so that fact in particular makes kind of sense. Maybe Hackett knew that Liara had more possibilities of seeing Shepard than his/her mum? I don't know the exact story (haven't played Lair of the Shadow Broker yet), but hearing only that conversation, the conclusion I make is that Hackett gave Liara the tags when he already knew Shepard was alive (she even says Hackett sends his regards).

It still implying that an alien is more important than Shepards mother. Hackett knows where Shepard's mother is. He can give them to her. He than sends a message to Shepard or even his/her mother wanting to meet somewhere. I would rather receive my dogtags from my mother than some alien

Interesting. I've never seen that bit of dialogue in my game - she simply says she recovered them. I notice that video was uploaded in 2010 - perhaps it was changed after that. Or for the trilogy release, or somesuch.

I don't care that she's alien myself. lol. Just that it assumes closeness, without any choice. It's lame for anyone merely cool or cold to Liara. What's the point of a trilogy/import system when they do stuff like this? The only part I don't care for in regards to "alien"-ness is that she shortcuts her way into knowing Shepard. I'm not a fan of how Asari prefer to interact this way. Not only is it creepy on some philosophical/real world level for me, but it also sucks for gameplay. Every other character you're relating through actual attitudes and events that happen. Whether it's Garrus' take on justice or Tali and her homeworld or Jack and her suffering. Even new, minor characters like Sam and Cortez revolve around actual events (Horizon and Ferris Fields). Screw the mystical crap. These are real stories. And yet I'm railroaded into bonding with this other person who can't actually relate to much at all.

She does, but I believe it only occurs if she is being romanced. Someone else would have an answer I'm sure

@StreetMagic - what about Javik's sensory ability? :P

But really, it's not that annoying to quit the series over. If that bothers you that much, just don't play LotSB and/or avoid talking to Liara in ME3. And the renegade option to "comfort" her after Thessia is quite cold - "I need to know that you'll be fit for the next mission".

It's creepy too. But he doesn't care about anyone, and doesn't want me to care either. So it's all good. He's not trying to bond. He puts his abilities in the context of "hunting"... that they developed/evolved it from being hunters.

Does Liara try to bond? I never got that impression. You can avoid her in ME1 and have her only join minds once (after threatening to dump her in volcano). She does not offer it in ME2 (unless romanced?). And you can reject the final gift in ME3, which is not a try to bond IMO.

And yet she frantically recovers your corpse and said she did it for "herself" later. And keeps your suit in glass, which is even creepier than Conrad...who only bought a cheap replica. :P She's like some parasite you can't shake off, because of her connection with the Prothean visions.

About the only thing that might save you is getting Javik to be friendly with her. Maybe she'll realize how boring Shepard is finally, and attach herself to him instead.

Yeah, Shepard fetish is weird. Though it might be a side effect of joining in ME1 (especially in Liara's case who is presented as quite young and inexperienced). I doubt mind meld is one-sided, at least for normal asari. Would be interesting to theorize on how did they develop the ability? :)

Maybe it's the same as Protheans (hunting related). But they took a different interpretation of it. Their whole religion revolves around this type of "connection". Once they realized they could bond with anyone, they developed a philosophy of unity/oneness and how everyone is part of the same energy of life. Hence, the "embrace eternity" line, which is related to this religion. So whether it started as hunting related or not, they interpreted it on a more social level.

But I think it's all bullshit. We're not all connected. I want to be connected, but it takes work and exploration.

Also, the Asari ultimately prove to be full of crap anyways. They just wanted to direct and control others. While Liara just spies on people and discovers their secrets, without asking questions.

I'm not so certain. Protheans are able to read information from DNA traces etc. while Asari are only able to do it in close contact with other species. Their ability is not that useful for hunting. More, they actually reproduce that way.

Nobody forces you accept it. Hell, I haven't even thought of that connection before your comment.

Well she is the Shadow Broker/intel broker, right? :) If you refer to mind meld, I don't see how it can be considered spying if she asks you for approval before each meld :D

The spying bit is about the Shadow Broker stuff. But there's an underlying approach to both melding and spying.

She's only interested in results. There's no "process" to the way she gets to know anyone. Not Shepard (through the melds) or his friends (through spying).

Hell, it's why I don't even like Control and Synthesis. They don't champion the idea of process and evolution either. They're just goal oriented. It's cheating your way into a position (or in her case, into knowing people), without really understanding or caring how you get there.

The dossiers? I always thought they were collected by the previous broker. Is there anything that suggests otherwise?

She actually interacts with the crew. Most notably - Kaidan in ME1. You can hear about that from both Kaidan and her in ME3. She also talks to Garrus, Kaidan over the intercom (she also shares a drink with Garrus). Tali considers her a friend. I doubt her relations with all of them are based on deceit. And she helps when it counts - Joker's request. So it's not like she only uses her connections to spy on people.

Personally, I like ME1 Liara the most. Her change towards more ruthless and calculating character in ME2-ME3 is not something I enjoy.

Some of the dossiers seem to be a mix. Depending on when you play, I guess. Although I'm talking ME3 too. Not just her terminal. Stuff like smugly telling Jack her real name is Jennifer. She just acts lame when she does this.. like she knows people better than themselves.

ME1 Liara was still odd to me, but at least the player had more choices.

I don't remember her talking to Garrus except in the lounge. He doesn't want to speak with her on the intercom or be "consoled" (funnily, you can do this yourself).

Gathering info about Nerve Stim Pro doesn't seem like a friendly approach for Tali. :P That's like publicly telling people what color vibrator someone uses.
