Female. Meer is painful in ME1, though he improves dramatically as the trilogy goes on to the point I think he's the better of the two by ME3. But add in that I really can't figure out the CC for guys and that none of the romances work for me and FShep it is.

He really is painful. I feel like I'm watching Fargo or something :D

But it gets better.

If it wasn't for some of the romance dynamic, I might've been won over to Femshep earlier.

I think the whole emotion in their voice bit is a tad overrated. The way I look at it is how do you talk? I highly doubt some talk as "emotionally" as Hale does as Femshep whereas Meer and Male Shep sound more normal. He gets emotional when the time calls for it while he stays calm for most of the rest, Hale's on the other hand felt a little exaggerated. Imagine if Male shep was on the Troy Baker voice bandwagon though :P haha

Baker is the Anti-Shep. Didn't he do Kai Leng?

You're kidding, right? Compare that to the interrogation scene in Thane's loyalty mission. Or the Citadel DLC.

When I play that game, Hale just sounds vaguely pissed off all the time. So when Shepard is pissed off, I understand. But there's a good portion of the game where Shepard isn't supposed to be pissed off, and it just doesn't work.

This. Hale always sound like she is either angry, really grossed out by the environments around her, or as if she hated everyone.

*Disgusted, bitchy noise* "Can you do that?"

Ugh, her voice makes me want to punch a kittens! Which is why I say that she makes a perfect renegade. For everything else there is Meer and MaleShep.

I would like it better if people point out exactly at what point Hale sounds "emotionally exaggerated" and where Meer sounds "normal". I have a harder time thinking BroShep anything but normal. I wouldn't say he's emotionless either since he did such a great job at sounding soulless and bored for better part of the trilogy. Hale could do very exaggerated high pitch nasal voice really well and you hardly see that much of her in ME.

I think it depends on which Shepard you choose in your first playthrough and you would develop preferences. I've used to Hale's more rounded delivery with FemShep that I have a hard time with Meer's portraying Shepard as a flat character. I suppose, switching between BroShep and FemShep and vice versa can be disorienting. Thus "emotionally exaggerated" comments with FemShep and my perception that BroShep is boring Hero tropish character. He seems like he had a harder time with his delivery and it shows his inexperience. We wouldn't even have this "which is better" conversation if Meer was replaced with Brian Bloom... but its too late now.

I thought Hale occasionally emoted a bit too much, which it made it seem like her character was on the verge of losing her composure. Meer's performance on the other hand was a lot more subtle, and more spot on as far as portraying a military officer.

I don't think Bloom is right for the role at all. I'm sure he's got range (I've seen it in smaller characters), but it doesn't seem up his alley. There are a lot of great voice actors, but not all of them right for the part. DC Douglas (Legion) and Steve Blum (Grunt) are probably my favorite in the ME series, but they wouldn't fit Shep either. It might be funny though...

They needed more private moments with Shepard without the dreams possibly losing composure, but there weren't any fail missions other than Thessia. We were kicking ass. And if you played multi-player you had an all blue map "We are holding steady and winning in key sectors." The game was way too much of a power trip for the story.

In all fairness, some of the dialogue lines were pretty bad, too. Like at the missiles - "We can do this." It sounds like doubt. You've been kicking ass throughout the entire section. Why should that change? Where the hell was your support anyway? Anderson's brilliant plan. "I'm sending you up the middle where the resistance is the heaviest. You have to get to that beam." Yeah, I know it was the videogamey part. But come up with a better line that doesn't sound like doubt.

That pre-battle speech. I'd liked to have skipped it altogether. I know it was for bullsh*t cinematics because we all need a rousing speech before heading into hell, but if they didn't know what was at stake by that time, nothing was going to help them. I skipped it for the Suicide Mission.

Besides the best speech I've heard in a movie is this one:

Spoiler

I think Kiefer Sutherland would have been a great Shepard, but he was tied up with 24 at the time.

He did good with Male Trooper (even better than Hale) and he could do a lot of soldier voice really well. And he's sexy... mmmm.. Meer never make me want to melt into a puddle and swoon. Disappointing really.

I would have like it much better if Hale acted Shepard a bit like what she did with Commander Sarah Palmer in Halo 4. sigh... Bioware should just reboot the trilogy and give us more Shep...

Never played SWTOR before (not far past character creation at least). Watched a little of the above. Pretty good looking game for an mmo actually..  It's distinctive at least.

I can't judge his voice too much because I didn't watch all of it. Seems like he has a stick up his ass though... which would fit for some Sheps. :P

swtor is an amalgam of kotor and ME1. I was surprised that I prefer FemShep over FemTrooper. Had Hale portrayed Shepard like Trooper, she would range the same as Meer's Shepard. Less emotional.. more like a stick in the mud soldier-type.... *grumbles*

Well, I don't want either one to be a stick in the mud. Even though I'm playing a military shooter, I hate all of that. I try not to play male Shep that way. Sometimes it's hard to avoid. I think ME2 did a good job of giving Shep some swagger though. He has ease and comfort in his surroundings. He's not stiff.. he knows what he's doing. Like he's part of the world around him, instead of curling up and acting like some serious soldier. He reminds me more of a cool cop. Not a space marine.

I wouldn't want Femshep that way either. I've never played Femshep, but from what I've seen of renegade femshep, she sounds pretty cool.

I think renegade femShep should have smoked. It would have added a nice touch. But I grew up in the days when smoking was in sitcoms. Batarians smoke, The Illusive Man smokes, but they're evil and we know smoking is evil. They had ashtrays with cigarettes and cigars smoldering in them on the Normandy, but no one was actually smoking them. Political correctness for the loss. But kids are so impressionable and they don't want them starting because their hero Commander Shepard lights up.

Shepard lights up after faking the genophage cure. She worked hard, nearly died, and now it's time for a Camel. 4 out of 5 doctors choose Camel.

I wonder if Solid Snake is a bad influence on kids.

Or maybe in Japan at least.

It actually makes a certain amount of sense when you think about it though. Smoking probably would be prohibited on space ships. That would mean smokers would turn towards dip/snuff, as many people in the real world military (or at leas the U.S. &  Canada) do since they often have jobs that limit where/when you can smoke much more than the civilian world.

Fem Shep with a wad of tobacco in her mouth and an empty soda can to spit in would not be an attractive sight.

Have her do a series of public service announcements in old age, with her chin removed.

I think my Shep is way too good of shape to be a smoker. Have you seen the pullups?

It's probably Chakwas smoking up the place. Doctors are crazy like that.

No it doesn't. It's a so what? Shepard is a Spectre. Spectres are above the law. They can turn up the air recycling and change the filters more often if they don't like it. :P And don't tell me that the Normandy doesn't have a still on it somewhere.

True. Doesn't make sense though...smoking would actually be dangerous on a space ship.

"I knew I had no choice but to quit smoking before the Apollo flight. To light up is to burn up in a pure oxygen atmosphere—it’s as simple as that. I had been trying to quit for ten years. In Mercury and Gemini I had put my habit on hold for a day or so. So in January 1968 I began the painful process. I had been smoking OPCs (other peoples cigarettes) for a while. I put an end to that by giving everyone I’d mooched from a carton, and as I did I said to them: “Die!” It’s an effective way to quit—I never smoked again—and to terminate friendships."

---Walter M. Schirra, Apollo 7 astronaut
