You know, if people said Sheploo was the "original canon Shepard", I wouldn't care.

My statement comes from the fact that Bioware's first version of Shepard was a lady, and I happen to think that's cool. It's usually a dude who takes that place, and the lady comes after. I was actually surprised by Cooper's tweet, because it only took three games before they finally made a trailer featuring the fem!protagonist.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong or worth being bothered by from people emphasizing that simple fact. Let us take our victories where we can.

Well, imo, you SHOULD care if people said that. Male Shepard was /not/ the "original canon Shepard" no more than female Shepard was.

Just because male Shepard gets the majority of the trailer and cover art doesn't make him the original canon Shepard. There never was an original canon Shepard.  The very person you're quoting from twitter even came out and clarified that point.

You're turning "originally started with a female model from Jade Empire" to suddenly being the equivalent of "original default canon Shepard". It is not.

Sorry. "canon" was the wrong word for the thing I was trying to acknowledge. My point being, I think it's cool they tried animating a femShep first. It reinforces the fact that they valued their fem!protagonists as much as their male protagonists. Not that it really showed throughout ME's marketing efforts, but a pat on the back is always appreciated.

I admit I got overexcited by the attention that received, hence my OP. I didn't mean to make a bold statement or offend anyone.

FemShep may have been animated first but Male Shep showed who they obviously put more work into by face scanning him.

Valued as much as their male protagonist? LOL! Femshep doesn't even have a face model, whilst most of the squad mates do. Her face was subject to a controversial beauty pageant and the winning face didn't even come out right in game, how is she as valued?

I try not to think too deeply on it tbh

I alternate between the two.  I generally use maleshep for renegade and renegon runs and I use femshep for paragon runs.

Femshep with me obviously, Hale does a fantastic job. I actually never played as femshep when ME1 first came out, but tried one playthrough and never looked back.

FemShep, because I've loved Ms. Hale's voice work since Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem which came out in 2002.  She played the (more or less) main character Alex Rovias.  Also, my husband played a female Trooper in ToR, in which Ms. Hale does the voice, which helped.  Finally, last year at Denver Comic Con, after I finished the ME series for the first time, I got to meet her and tell her how much Shep, Alex and the Trooper all meant to me.

Don't get me wrong.  I met Mark Meer as well, even got his autograph in a framed Shep picture above my desk.  He's a helluva nice guy, and seeing him do his vorcha voice was hilarious.  However, in the actual game, Sheploo sounds a little too stoic for me.

A lot of my preference for FemShep also comes from the running animation.  I know it sounds silly, but the linebacker/gorilla stomp running animation on the Sheploo made me laugh so hard that I couldn't play him.  I might try him later, if only to try the Ashley romance.

BroShep, mainly because I'm male and Meer does an excellent job. It's very stoic, yes, but that's exactly what I like and want about Shepard. And while I'm in the minority on this, I actually dislike Hale's performance in the trilogy (LOVED her in Kotor, though). Her low-tone soldier voice has always sounded fake to me, like she forces it too much.

FemShep, since the majority of my PTs are with her (and it is really difficult to make a maleShep who I don't think looks like a potato). I really enjoy Hale's acting, and connect to my femSheps really easily.

That said, my current PT is with maleShep. I've gotten used to his voice. I really like Meer's delivery on some of the renegade lines too! MaleShep also has my preferred set of LIs, so that's fun to try out.

So far BroShep for me! I like playing with male characters way more and while I thought Meer was too static but ok in ME1, he stepped it up in ME2 and I was sold in ME3, he was great there.

While for FemShep, which I'm currently playing, it's probably the other way around. ME1 is good so far, and I haven't finished that yet with her, but from all the videos I've seen from ME2 and ME3, I don't particularly like her voice because of this:

I actually dislike Hale's performance in the trilogy. Her low-tone soldier voice has always sounded fake to me, like she forces it too much.

It's especially present in the ending scene of ME3. Didn't like it at all. But maybe I'll get used to it ;)

I never played Femshep, but have nothing against it.... I played both genders in some other games, but it doesn't interest me here. Especially not a whole trilogy.

It's always been FemShep for me. She's definitely my fictional role model if I've ever had one. I think it's cool how drastically different people can perceive Shepard despite the dialogue and content being pretty much the same.

Male Shepard.

I connect with him more, especially if I'm playing my non-canon Shinji Shepard.

I don't cross gender role play if I have a choice. I love both actors. I think both do their Shepards proud.

But, FemShep / Hale is a powerful combination.

I didn't play as a male

loved Jennifer Hale's acting throughout

liked how the plot basically ended with me back with Liara after a what felt like a fling with Jacob

I only played through the stories once so that's my Canon

made my femshep look kinda like Olivia Wilde

Male shep because

a) I found it impossible to make a femshep without a goofy simpsons style overbite derp face

and more importantly

B) I can't stand the Femshep voice actor.  She sounds so utterly BORED with every sentence, regardless of context.

Also, It feels like Maleshep's actor is perfect for paragon, but sounds forced doing renegade, while the reverse is true for Femshep

That's an interesting inversion of popular consensus. Mark Meer is generally acknowledged to have a better Renegade style response (deadpan, dry, sardonic) compared to Jennifer Hale, who is considered to have the better Paragon style (compassionate, warmer, softer).

That said, I don't like the voice she uses per se with FemShep. I think it would have been better if she had a more feminine, higher voice. Femshep's voice is too deep, raspy, and masculine for me. I think she should have used her voice that she used for Jean Grey in the animated show 'Wolverine and the X-Men'. More feminine and softer.

I also think that Femshep should have had an non-North American accent, though that's more preference.

Agreed on Femshep's voice Almighty, but mostly because I am so tired of hearing Jennifer Hale EVERYWHERE. Don't get me wrong, she a great VA, but I like more variety.

I would have loved to have a Femshep with an Afrikaans accent.

Depends on whether my current Shepard is more Paragorn or Renegade-influenced. Mark Meer can sound like a real brute when he wants to, but I find that he voices altruistic dialogue options a lot more flatly and unnaturally. Hale is very good at the good-but-firm lady-of-war voice, with some playfulness on top, but her more ruthless lines tend toward the cartoonish and overdramatic.

They both do very good work with the "neutral" lines, though, which is one of the reasons I hate that choosing those is punished by the reputation system.

I like both, really. And, depending on what kind of game I want to play, I either go with the tough Fem!shep soldier who kicks ass left and right, even as Paragon, and only allows herself to be vulnerable around Kaidan through all 3 games (loving him in 1, losing him in 2, earning his love back in 3), or the tank of a male Vanguard Shepard who stops at nothing, fighting and punching his way through Geth, Collectors, Reapers... only to realise the world is coming to an end in 3 and that he also needs someone to live for... maybe even love.

....Yeah, Kaidan is my favourite LI, how did you guess?

MShep, partly (mostly) due to Talimancing and partly due to the voice acting.

I'll say it now, I don't get the hype about Femshep. Sure, she's emotional, but it's often the WRONG emotion. Meer's work in the later games was pretty damn close to hers, with the added bonus of keeping in line with my Confident-on-the-battlefield Parashep.

Plus, MShep and Kaiden are an interesting pair, especially due to their inability to romance beforehand.

I actually agree.  Like I said, she just comes across as so utterly bored, like she didn't want to actually be in the sound booth at all.  Same deal when she voiced commando in ToR, and Ms Marvel in Avengers.  Honestly, most of her "recent" gigs have that same bored tone.  I remember some older stuff where she was amazing and I was actually shocked to learn it was Ms Hale.

I mean I loved her doing like, Mallory back in Mighty Ducks, back int he 90s and such, its just that nowadays, it seems like both me AND her are tired of her voicing every character the same way, like she's typecast.

Commander Shepard will always be female for me, it's what i'm most comfortable with and Jennifer Hale is the bomb( do people even say that anymore? Well, they should).

She can really cheese it in on some renegade lines but overall i prefer her over Mark, she emotes abit more, though Mark is great aswell.

Also whenever i try to make a male shep they end up looking like this:

son-i-am-disappoint.gif

Thank god for Sheploo, but i prefer to make my own characters.
