I prefer Rogue myself in hindsight because it really adds to the "Hawke really was just a regular guy caught in the middle of these s***** events."
That and since I loved playing Sarcastic it added to the whole "Lovable Scoundrel" thing my Hawke had going.

I made my Hawke a mage as it seemed to be more fitting in the story to be one and as more conflicting in handling the Anders situation. But to be honest regardless of what your class is, its still going to be personal, as one of your siblings is a mage and the Amells seemed to be involved w/ other mage family members too.

Another vote for the humorous rogue/loveable scoundrel. However, mine got more serious in Act 3.

For me it's always rogue. Tried mage, and as much as I love it, it just doesn't fit as much as I'd like. I always found Meredith's reasoning around this a tad unconvincing. I love the whole dual-wield dynamic, I greatly enjoy my Hawke being an assassin, the absolute best use of the murder knife is unavailable to mages, and Bethany is the surviving sibling (which I feel puts a better face on the Circle).

I liked Warrior and Mage but I imported warrior Hawke as my cannon one to DAI (although this was partly because I already set my DAO character as a mage).
That said while I liked Bethany more than Carver I think Carver is a better character over all. His relationship with Hawke seemed like a real brother relationship and I liked his growth either in the Templars or the Grey Wardens. Going mage also makes it seem like Hawke is slightly more involved in the big fight between templar and mage but this isn't a huge deal.

Go mage.
You are from a mage bloodline (both your mother and father side). You have spent all your life hiding and protecting yourself and your sister from both the Templars and dangers of magic. You are more relevant to the story too. It becomes more apparent in Legacy DLC.

My preferred class for Hawke is a mage, because I believe the conflict between mages and templars feels more personal.
This. The interactions related to the conflict feel more interesting if you are mage. I played once as a rogue and, while Bethany is a better character than Carver, my own story didn't feel so relevant to the main conflict.

The fact that we're all disagreeing shows how dynamic the game is. Subtly dynamic, but nonetheless it works on many levels.
It kind of gets the rep of being shallow or railroaded or something, but it's just not true.

Aggressive rogue. Suits the world weary anti-hero thing Hawke has got going on.

Storywise, warrior makes the most sense. Male Hawke looks most natural as a warrior imo, though maybe that's from how burly he looks. I always liked playing him as the kind hearted but steadfast warrior. The good man who likes getting involved with the bad girl Isabella LOL I like Bethany a lot more than Carver too so I hate having to kill her. She's not bad to look at either lol

For the most part, agree. My femHawke is generally a Shadow/Duelist than an Assassin, largely due to her romance with Isabela. I figure they share tips and tactics. I love the scene where they are throwing knives off of each other on the way to bed; I first saw this as a Rogue and it makes so much more sense that Isabela would be throwing the murder knife off a Rogue Hawke than any other class. I thought it was specific to the Rogue Hawke until later playthroughs proved it happens with every class.
Having Bethany as a sibling always felt like enough motivation to side with the mages, especially when my Hawke thinks about her father and what he would have expected her to do to protect her younger sister. I don't know why a disconnect exists there for so many players if their Hawke isn't a Mage. I'm not trying to say that's wrong; merely that I never had a problem empathizing with Bethany and putting myself into the shoes of a protective sibling.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Mage femHawkes. It is a lot of fun to play as the group's Spirit Healer. But Rogue was always more satisfying to me.

For me at least the story flows better with Hawke as a Mage, having to travel to the Deeproads in the first place to avoid "Your Templar problem" per Carver just felt more natural then hauling Beth along for the ride, especially since I get the distinct impression that Hawke was really the one holding her back from simply turning herself over to the Circle in the first place.

Unless you make her into a Grey Warden

If it weren't for Hawke Beth would have most likely turned herself over to the Circle shortly after she got into Kirkwall and quite frankly seems a lot happier in the Circle then she does as a Warden. (On the other hand Carver seems happier as a Warden then as a Templar to me.) --- No Deep Roading necessary.

They didn't know that at the time. She could have easily been miserable in the Circle. It's easy for us to declare it after it's happened

Although you're right that Hindsight is always 20/20, anyone who knows Beth should have been able to make an educated guess that she'd be a "good match" for Circle Life.

From a playstyle point, Mage. ![]()
From a stroy point... that gets tricky. Warrior/Rogue has Bethany to be concerned about (provided you don't take her to the Deep Roads at all) while Mage is 'in theory' trying to hide being a Mage from the city. After Lenadra's death, there really isn't much of a point in Mage!Hawke to stay in Kirkwall. Mine would have hopped ship with Isabella when the Qunari flipped out and not looked back, because that city? F*** 'em. Becoming Champion as a Mage.... I suppose there could be explinations as to why the Templars and Circle didn't loose it, too politically visable/popular most likely.
This is actually the sticking point for me at the moment, need to make a playthrough siding with the Templars to get the last two achievements and having issues decideing how to make it work. W/R with Warden or dead Beth, M with Templar Carver.

I think Rogue fits my sarcastic Hawke the best though. Hawke not being Mage and Bethany running around with the taint brigade also meant my Hawke could remain somewhat neutral in the whole Mage x Templar thing somewhat longer. I even liked Meredith.

Rogue is more fun for me from a role play standpoint. I can "protect" my sister and really feel like the bigger sibling. Rogue combat in DA:2 is incredibly dynamic and fluid and you can basically teleport all around the battlefield, picking off people who are attacking your friends. Plus Rogue is clearly your role as Champion - outmaneuvering all the idiots in Kirkwall, going up against authority, starting on the streets and ending up rich. It feels very natural.

I have to go with warrior or rogue because I cannot deal with the many instances where Hawke's apostate status is ignored... it just makes no sense considering the setting and that ruins the game for me (which is a shame since the mage class can be a lot of fun in DA2).
As for the siblings... I think they're both alright... Carver is kind of annoying, but he's an interesting character. Bethany is easier to get along with, but she's also a lot more bland. Personally, I'd have preferred the surviving sibling to be random, even if that meant more work for the writing staff. That said, I'm always relieved when you finally get to ditch the sibling and do your own thing as Hawke... like I said, they were alright, but I didn't miss either of them once they were gone.

more often then not I play as a mage. It helps bring the conflict that is rising to a more personal lv. Here I am an apostate hiding from the Templars until I rose up to be powerful enough influence wise to be out of reach. Usually my Hawke does not get along with Carver. They argue often to the point that at the end of act 1 she leaves him behind. Talk about feeling betrayed when she returns home to see him standing there in that Templar armor. From that point on its now just her and her mother (but we know how that ends
) When Hawke is finally alone with just her friends, she believes she has no brother. Even when she meets Carver at the end, she hardly speaks a word to him.
If I play as another class it is usually rogue. I find warrior class to be boring for some reason. My Hawke is very protective of Bethany and the two are very close. Bethany usually goes with her into the Deep Roads and becomes a warden. Once I did leave her behind and she joined the circle. My Hawke and her still got along and my Hawke supported the mages and protected her when she could.
