I always thought Mage Hawke made much sense for story. I mean, it didn't feel personal while playing as a rogue/warrior, at least for me. Sure, Bethany could become a circle mage in rogue/warrior path. When I play as a rogue, I always take her to Deep Roads because of that since Hawke tries to hide her from Chantry's grasp, too, as it is indicated in the game. However, she is bitter about being Grey Warden and being "half dead" all the time so I always choose Mage Hawke and make Carver a GW and finally he feels like a hero ![]()
Prefered Class for Hawke's story?

That's ignoring how insanely dangerous the Deep Roads are to non-Wardens. Bethany isn't a dwarf or physically enhanced in any way, doesn't wear armor and she signs on as a bodyguard, nobody else aside from Merril make themselves that vulnerable to the Taint. Anyone who cared about her well-being and didn't consider the party immortal could have predicted that she would be the most likely to catch darkspawn sickness, and dragging your little sister along to face risks like that is pretty damn reckless.
"I can protect her better in the Deep Roads" isn't a realistic thought, a Hawke who is protective of Bethany has to be entirely aware of all the ways s/he can't protect Bethany in the heat of battle or on a long march through a hyper-infectious environment, just like s/he lost Carver to the ogre. It's a choice between dragging Bethany into certain and sustained danger or leaving her in the uncertain danger of having to lay low for a few weeks. And unlike Carver, Bethany herself is mostly just interested in going because her brother/sister is, and is almost relieved at being left behind.
And in the end, Bethany is much happier as a circle mage than she is as a Grey Warden. And I can't blame her, the Wardens suck ass as an order.
And Carver is just the little brother who needs to be reigned in and constantly has hissy fits. Wow, what character. At least Bethany has actual opinions and family relationships more complex than "daddy loved my sisters more, my sisters are more awesome than me, I wants tuu be sumwun twooo!! >.<"
Complex like "I'm so sorry for being a mage"?

Complex like "I'm so sorry for being a mage"?
But... she isn't sorry about being a mage. So no.

Bethany: That's easy. Be normal. No magic, just... normal.

Merrill: If you could do anything - just anything at all - what would you do?
Bethany: That's easy. Be normal. No magic, just... normal.
Fair enough. Guess what? That's still not all her personal conflict boils down to.

I've been trying a new approach playing Mage with hopefully less immersion breaking. By sticking to some of the Entropy spells, with a bit of Creation and a bit of Arcane, I feel like I can sort of justify Hawke as appearing like a drunken master-type. He's not using magic, he's just fighting enemies who are really accident-prone. Definitely.
It'd be a whole lot easier if normal soldiers occasionally used halberds and spears. That's something I really can't wrap my mind around. The primary melee weapons of basically all infantry everywhere throughout history, but in Thedas only mages find polearms practical?
It's ridiculous. If I had to choose from any weapon in any DA game to defend myself in a pinch with the Bloodline "staff" would be it by a long shot and I'd feel pretty confident going up against even experienced warriors with swords and axes. And those flapjacks with daggers and "leather armor" would be shredded like toilet paper.

I love them both, but that really is the crux of Bethany's character. It's why she's so miserable as a Grey Warden - the possibility of ever being a normal woman with a normal life is completely stripped from her. Even when she's not a Warden, she frets over the fact that her family sacrifices so much for her, talks about how much she wants to be normal, dreams about life as a noblewoman and makes doe-eyes at Sebastian. Her codex entry states that she envies mage!Hawke for embracing their magic instead of being afraid of it.
Carver just wants to be special, Bethany just wants to be normal.

A lot of the Qunari footsoldiers use 'em in this game at least. Granted, they mostly use them as throwing weapons, but still. And my preferred "polearm" (which, granted, is just my fave staff anyway) is the staff of Parthalan. It'd be a whole lot easier if normal soldiers occasionally used halberds and spears. That's something I really can't wrap my mind around. The primary melee weapons of basically all infantry everywhere throughout history, but in Thedas only mages find polearms practical?

I mean... the opponents never get close to each other? There is always a 5 foot distance between them?

I know it is one of the most used weapons in history, but I find it hard to imagine a spear being used in a melee fight.
I mean... the opponents never get close to each other? There is always a 5 foot distance between them?
Two opponents attacking each other with spears? Hard to say. I imagine each would be trying to knock the other's spear off-line so they could safely get a stab in themselves, or trying to suddenly close inside the other's current reach hoping that they'd be too slow to retract their weapon in time to defend themselves. It all depends on context though, spears are fantastic used with shields and much more useful from behind a shield wall than a sword.
Mostly though, yes, the combatants would try to stay out of reach and try different ways to surprise the other. They're terrifying weapons if you're actually putting your life up against one, quick as lightning that can strike anywhere on your body, and very effective for getting through armor. And you can easily and quickly retract a spear enough to use it at close range, so contrary to popular belief you can still fight with it up close, provided nothing and nobody is standing directly behind you.
- The first guy without a shield seems pretty inexperienced with his weapon, ignoring every opportunity to go for his opponent's legs, but notice the two fencers behind them who keep a similar distance from each other when not actively lunging.
And it has to be said, battlefield spears could be quite a lot longer than 5 feet.

It might be trite but I always roll a female mage Hawke, a mage just seems more relevant and I love the sibling interaction with Carver. Although its very good with a male Hawke (reminds me of my brothers bickering).
Haven't played a Pro-Templar run as I cant do it in good conscience. So always Pro-Mage, friendship romance Fenris and Rivalry Anders.

I like playing as "magic knight" type characters, but Mage-Hawke was trained in swordplay by their father.
So when enemies close in melee and I proceed to beat them over the head with my staff, it's immensely satisfying, especially the *THWAK* sound that accompanies it.
That and Templar-Carver, it's a city divided, and brothers opposed...
On the one hand I want to do what's "right" for Kirkwall, but in the other, I want to do what's "right" for my family. Being a mage complicates matters, because I fit so many criterion of the different groups in Kirkwall: "yes, magic can be dangerous" "yes, mages are people too", but they're exclusive to each other.
I see the relationship between Mage-Hawke and Templar-Carver as a sort of mirror to Kirkwall as a whole, mages and templars; two brothers (my Hawke is male) who appear to be the faces for the two sides of Kirkwall...
Seeing Carver refuse to turn on me, defying Knight Commander Meredith... it's a bright spot in an otherwise dark ending.
Here I go, rambling again...

I think the rival brothers works well too.
Although I prefer female (mage) Hawke and Warden Carver. She's kind of goes out of her way for him, despite being a punk.

My Hakwes are mostly rogues - I just love that class. And I normally take dual wielding, because I like having Varric in my group.
Normally I side with the mages in the end and let Bethany become a circle mage - she's happier that way.
