Hey, I just wanted to add my 2 cents to the conversation regarding the combat and how well it was balanced for Nightmare and Friendly Fire also some general tips and the like. After 100 hours in the game, first I will say I love the game and hope to put another 100 hours into it.

PC version, using Mouse and Keyboard controls. Went from Dagger/Dagger rogue in the beginning to a Bow/Artificer rogue.

After rebinding the controls a bit, I found the controls to be just fine on the tactical and regular combat side. The idea that by default A and D are rotate camera is mind boggling, but after some tweaks it worked out fine. To be honest, even on nightmare I almost never used the tactical camera anyhow, as combat was more suited for action camera then anything.

The lack of tactics other then on/off was confounding. So much so that I just did not pick up any AOE skills. They weren't worth the effort as just single-targeting and picking off various enemies was a way better tactic. My method was usually, Assassin, Marksmen, Footmen, Guardsmen, Bosses/Elites. This seemed to work most of the time.

The Champion specialty on one of the companions you get is beastly and will help you so much. The amount of armor he can produce is insane and will almost always win a fight against a boss for you. Dragons especially almost always went down 1 v 1 with him, as nobody can compare.

Nightmare is harder in the beginning. It drops down in difficulty as soon as you get to about the half-way mark in the story. Then you get more crafting and better gear, thus able to customize your characters as you wish and pump out the damage.

When on a story mission. Almost never use your potions. Set your reserves to "all" on all characters and use them only after a fight. Use your regeneration potions first. Seems counterproductive, but supply caches are few and far between and it's better to heal after a big fight then during it if it's not a boss. Bosses have a lot of HP and can 1-shot many companions that don't have access to barriers and the like. The game was thinking you could use potions all the time. Even with the expanded potions slot perk, you'll never have enough in a mission and companions will never use regeneration potions on their own.

Crafting weapons and armor is essential. Crafted stuff is way better then anything you pick up. Save maybe the occasional staff. You see a huge dps gap between a level 19 weapon and a crafted weapon using Tier 3 materials.

If you use a 2 handed warrior. Make sure he's the only melee companion in your party. Whirlwind will destroy party members in seconds and you'll be wondering why everyone around you died... That is except for the enemies.

Dragons are an interesting fight in the game. As a bow rogue, the trick isn't to stay away from the dragon and shoot him, but rather get as close as possible. This is because he telegraphs his melee attacks way more slowly, also fireballs will annihilate you if your dodge is on cooldown. Along with beating his wings which not only draws you in, but kills you in the process if you're not right next to him.

Quick save is your friend. You never know when your companions will fail to kill that assassin and then he stealths along and 1 shots your entire back-line.

My overall tl;dr thoughts on the nightmare with FF experience is that I think Nightmare is how the game should be played, but Friendly Fire adds that extra "hard mode" challenge. If you find that the game is "too easy" then try bumping it up and if that's too much just toggle Friendly Fire in the options screen.

Thanks! This is great. I've bookmarked for my 2nd play through on nightmare.

Question, did you find a Mage was required at any point? I beat da1 and 2 on nightmare by using so many mages on the cheap fights. I'm hoping this game avoids any cheapness and I can run a balanced party.

By cheap I'm talking about the insane damage spikes that would happen in like DA2.

I never used the Knight Enchanter companion in my entire playthrough. Some people think that it's extremely powerful. I personally just didn't like the playstyle.

My entire game I only played with 1 mage in the party. And that was mainly for Barriers. I think they're required in the beginnning a bit because of the Ice spells. They're early in the tree and will disable most early enemy forces. Thus turning a combat situation from 3 enemies to 2 enemies. After the mid-way point I mainly had a mage for some extra buffs and the occasional Energize or Vielfire point.

Thanks for the tips! Will try to use the Champion a bit more and Regeneration potions (currently only equipped on my main character).

There are also healing mist bombs that I never acquired in my playthrough. I imagine those would be quite useful as supplemental healing as well.

I play on Nightmare as well, but only have Vivienne in the party, and do not use her as an actual knight enchanter, just as a normal mage.

Thanks for that, but I think I'm going to ramp up the difficulty with experience. What I mean is, with this playthrough (my first) I'm playing on hard difficulty. That's weird for me, as I usually play normal first, but I just felt that normal would be too easy for me, especially with barriers. Next playthrough, my second, I'll play hard using FF. Then nightmare, then nightmare with FF. Hard is stressfull enough, jumping to nightmare with FF off the cuff will just kill me.
