Hello,

We are looking into buying DA:I. However, we like to avoid heavy sexual content. We have heard that it can be avoided in some ways, we just wanted to check with the community that actually plays the game. Also, we want to make sure that immodesty is not overly common in the course of the game as well. Would you let a 12 year old play this, if he knew exactly what he was doing and what to avoid? Can you avoid all 10 sex scenes in the game?

It's an adult game with adult themes. If you're thinking of getting this for a 12 year old, then don't expect it to avoid this content or for it to be avoidable. You don't have to persue romances or sexual content, but that doesn't mean it's not referenced and implied by other characters.

It's very *easy* to avoid getting into romances; just don't pick the 'heart' options when they come up. You don't get 'ambushed' into a relationship in DA:I.

Further, even THEN... many of the romances are basically sex-less. Some kissing, and that's it. Also, there's no way to 'strip' anyone to undies in regular play. The default outfit always shows up when nothing else is on, and there's no lingerie outfits in the game.

"Immodesty" is something else. If your idea of 'modesty' involves women wearing a full burqa, then no, it is impossible to be 'modest' in the game. Modesty and immodesty are relative to a community. Without knowing what you personally consider modest or immodest, there is no way to advise you.

Just make sure you supervise and don't let the kids click on the flirt options (aka the heart icons). It's pretty easy to avoid that. That being said, you also might want to avoid letting him talk to Iron Bull, because even if you're not in a romance with him, he can say a few things that are, ahem, raunchy I guess even if you just do regular personal quests/interactions with him.

Well... the romance is avoidable, but some nudity/adult language/violence/sexual themes are not. The amount of times the F bomb was dropped kinda surprised me, lol. Case in point, this is a mature game for adults, thus why it has a Mature rating. Romance is avoidable but sexual themes and discussions, I'm not sure. I don't think it's possible to play this game and avoid enough content to make it a PG experience.

If you want my honest opinion (you don't) I'd rather have my kid playing a Bioware game for the sex scenes than looking at Internet porn (which most 12 year olds are either going to do, or have done.)

For the most part, Bioware treats romances with respect, and they are between consenting adults. Their romances can be everything from funny to passionate to loving. There's no GTA type stuff where women are only sloots and hores.

If you were going to buy him a game rated M (which, if you're trying to protect him from any sexual content, I don't recommend) I would probably buy him this one since it actually treats sex like something adults do and enjoy, without it being degrading. IMHO of course.

Every time I get on the subway with my twelve year old, I expose him to profanity, but at the same time, I don't seek out games or movies with cursing.  So that might be something to keep in mind, Blackwall, Iron Bull, and Sera all have potty mouths, and other characters probably have at least one or two moments of it.

Also keep in mind things like the creepy giant spiders, is that something that will bother your child?

The last time I had to stop letting my son watch something because he was so upset was the last episode of Lost.  He can watch a degree of violence without issue, but Jack Shepard not getting to go to Heaven?  MIND BLOWN.  He started crying.  Sometimes it's not the obvious stuff you need to watch out for.

So are we having a discussion here about buying a mature game for a kid?

Shouldn't the 'mature' rating say enough? It's not for a kid. Yes, you can avoid the romances, but no, a 12 year old will not.

Can you avoid the sex scenes in this game? Yes.

Can you avoid the f-bombs, violence, and mature themes? Nope.

Personally, I wouldn't let a 12 year old play this game...

I would let a 12 year old play this game. There's nothing more horrific going on than anything you can see on the news at any time of the day. 12 year old know what sex is, and if they don't know some curse words by that age, something's gone wrong.

Am I the only one who finds it hilarious people care so much about tasteful sex scenes, but don't give a damn about things like decapitations? Way to send a message to your kid.

Sex is not the only mature aspect of this game. Besides, Bioware is a pretty liberal company. There is no objectification of women or anything like that.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but you have to keep in mind that there are children out there who will act out sexually, with other young children, when they are exposed to sexual content like porn.  They don't understand it, they're curious about it, and exploring this with other children is a lot more accessible than getting their hands on a gun.

My son is autistic, and he isn't very socially savvy.  He knows the general idea of what human reproduction is, and he giggles and is curious when he sees people kissing or rolling around together in movies and tv.  I think it's really quite okay to let him have his innocence for a few more years.  He knows that chopping someone's head off in real life would have horrible consequences.  He doesn't know why it would be damaging for him to have sex at 12.  And yeah, I don't want to have to try to explain it to him.

I would not allow my kids to play it, and not because of the sexuality of it, but because of the morally grey decisions the players must make. People's death is unavoidable and doing good things also cause bad things, and that is very difficult to handle for children. Most kids at that age will familiarise themselves with cursing (in school at least) even if the family is opposed to such language. Most teenagers learn about sexuality at various degrees. But most teenages are not in a position to decide over quite a large group of people and suffer the blame for their possible death. While they do understand it is a game and not real, even reading about such decisions in books, if they have high empathy, can cause issues.

I definately would be more worried about this aspect: normal people who wanted to make life better for everyone were twisted and manipulated into becoming monsters who now murder people while believing they do good. This could happen to anyone in the game, despite being principally a good person and having the right reasons. And good people will do bad things to others.

I fully respect actually being a parent and trying to raise a kid correctly OP.  Good on you...its sad so many people don't have those values.

But if he doesn't see it in this game and he doesn't see it on the internet then he will see it at a friends house.  That's just how it is.

Don't act like this game has porn like scenes, there's barely any motion going on.

Are you actually suggesting that the romance or sexual content is being forced on the player against their will?

I haven't heard of that happening in a BioWare game. I'm pretty sure the most you would ever have to do is say "no," at the relevant moment during dialogue.

Heck, the "love scene" dialogue option in BW games is usually pretty clearly marked so... it seems like an odd question to even ask.

I didn't say that.  But if you're saying that it's okay to let kids watch sex scenes, you have to admit that it's REALLY easy for them to go from that to searching out porn on the internet.  And even if they're not watching hardcore porn, I still don't think my kid needs to see DA:I or Witcher style video game sex, at least not until he's mature enough to talk about it without giggling like a maniac.

I'm not saying every kid is the same.  When I was twelve, I was watching movies like I Spit On Your Grave and A Clockwork Orange, because I had NO supervision and a brother who worked in a video rental store.  I thought I was being cool, but now I look back and realize that I was watching horrible scenes of sexual violence with no adult to talk to and give it context.  And it was because I had already seen more tame sex in movies, that I thought it would be cool or fun to watch that kind  of stuff.  I *think* I handled it well, but who knows.  I think my son would be deeply affected by watching things like that, and if I want to be a good parent, I have to worry about this stuff.

I mean, yes, it's entirely possible to slaughter thousands of people without seeing a single boob in the game, but if that's your main concern then your priorities are a bit backwards IMO.

And considering we're talking about a twelve year old, they're probably not emotionally mature enough to even understand if they actually were getting involved with a character, and if they were aware, you're damn right they would try, lol.

I don't think Inquisition should be played by 12 year olds, imo. I don't know if the context will stick. The game is more than just hack and slash; it has pretty dense religious overtones. You know, stuff that can be debated into wee hours of night.

As far as avoiding romance arcs, yeah this game makes it pretty clear when you are about to trigger it, so it should be easy to avoid the mechanics in the game.

If you're worried about what it might do to your child, then seriously, sex is the least of your worries. You get to kill people by the thousands, for whatever reason, sometimes just because you don't like them.

That's much more worrying than some lame sex scene, but no one cares. Without the sex scene, we wouldn't even be having this discussion because it would get a PG13 rating and everyone would buy it for their kids.

The idea that sex is wrong is what's wrong here, not that it's in the game. The idea that massive violence somehow isn't bad is what's bad here.

Interactions with Iron Bull, Sera, and Dorian, both in terms of quests and party banter, deal with themes of sex and sexuality with various degrees of seriousness.

If you don't do a romance, nothing is shown, but things still get talked about.

Just don't get the game for you kid if you don't think they're mature enough to handle morally grey decisions which could include killing off an entire group of people, massive violence, romance, etc.
